I was so fortunate to go to school with them. I played bass but never got to their level. They went on in music and I went into aerospace. It was their positive attitude that made my future ❤️❤️

This live version of this song is a total experience. It blew me away the first time I saw it. Edgar Winter is very talented & plays many instruments including keyboards, saxophone & timbales. The title "Frankenstein" refers he fact that the original recording of the song was much longer than the final version & it required numerous edits to shorten it. So they spliced together many different parts.

"It got its title because of the arduous editing that went into the song; it became a monster when it was pieced together in the studio. Said Winter: "When we were editing it in the studio, back in those days when you edited something, you physically had to cut the tape and splice it back together, so it was all over the control room, draped over the backs of chairs and the couch. We were making fun of it, trying to figure out how to put it back together, saying 'Here's the main body; the leg bone's connected to the thigh bone...' Then Chuck Ruff, my drummer, says, 'Wow, man, it's like Frankenstein.' As soon as I heard that, I went, 'Wow, that's it!' The monster was born."

That is an ARP 2600 analog synthesizer. The actual synth is the box with the sliders that he was messing with; the keyboard on his neck is just the controller. He's actually playing the oscillators live in that noise section. (Speaking of Death Stars, they used that same instrument to create the voice of R2-D2 in Star Wars.) In the studio version they go back to the keyboard at the end, but doing it live like this, the synth was so far detuned by the time he was done that there was no way to go back and play melodic sounds on it. Drummer (and horn player - ha!) is Chuck Ruff, the bassist is Dan Hartman (had some disco hits like "Vertigo / Relight My Fire"), guitarist is Rick Derringer (was engineer on the studio recording, former vocalist for The McCoys ("Hang On Sloopy"); the original guitarist was Ronnie Montrose but he was unavailable for this gig so Rick took over for him).

"Frankenstein" is my all time favorite song. "They Only Come Out at Night" was the first album I ever bought, when I was 10 years old, b/c I _HAD_ to have Frankenstein to listen to as many times as I wanted to. Also, if you think this is wild, check out "Hocus Pocus" by Focus. It's the most fun you'll ever have watching a song being played live, 1973 on The Midnight Special. It's also an instrumental, but there are vocals, just no lyrics. You have to see it to know what I mean.

Here's a new group to give a listen, if interested. "Rare Earth - I Just Want To Celebrate (Live)" (by the channel: Connor Jones) --This song by the American rock band Rare Earth was the lead single on their album called "One World" released in 1971. This was the bands fifth single overall and the song reached number #7 on the pop chart. It also peaked at #30 on the Best-Selling Soul Singles chart. Rare Earth is quite a unique band because they had an uncanny ability to defy categories and could slip seamlessly between two major genres as smooth as butter and those were classic rock and R&B, they would leave you scratching your head while bopping along in pure pleasure.

This song was never actually "written". It started as a collection of warm-up riffs and goofing around pieces and parts that just sort of came together. Created from scraps...hince the name "Frankenstein". Edgar and his brother Johnny are albinos who grew up in Texas. They could't go outside and play in the hot TX sun so they stayed indoors and taught themselves how to play as many instruments as possible. Their mother saw her teenage boy's talent and took them to New Orleans where B.B. King was playing. She asked if her boys could jam with him. They had the proper cards, so he said yes. He was blown away.
