They were originally all solo artists who were asked to come together to do a single show to showcase Irish talent for a broadcast. They have been performing with varied talent for the past 19 years (I think) and toured all around the world. The girls shown have largely left the group except the second girl (Blond, Chloe) who was 16 (I think) during this performance. The show is staged at the side of an Irish Manor house(Castle) and as the show started it had just stopped raining. They are excellent in live performance. They tour around the world each year and are very partial to the US. The girl who thanked the audience is Lisa Kelly. She has retired from the group and lives in the US on the east coast with her husband and kids. She runs a music and voice school.

2020. Pandemy. Lockdown. My youngest daughter was bored and deeply sad, of not playing with her friends; of not going to school; of all that crap. Poor baby was 5 years old. So, to cheer her up, I showed her this amazingly beautiful clip by Celtic Woman. She watched it in complete silence, not understanding a single word ( we are from Brazil ). But her eyes were shining...for the first time in a long time. In the end, she simply said "There are real fairy princesses...! ". Always that I listen to this song, she finds me, put her head on my lap, and joins me in this little event...What comes to her mind? No idea. But I hope that is bright memory form a dark time.

I hope you two will check out this entire concert. It was performed outside of Johnstown Castle at Wexford, Ireland. The performers basically used the castle as the backdrop but also as their changing rooms (the ladies had several dress changes during the concert). The concert was held on the front lawn. I think it was a two-hour concert but this was a long time ago so I don't remember (my memory is really crap, sorry). I just remember watching it on PBS during a fund-raiser. ALL of the ladies and gentlemen KILLED IT DEAD in this concert. These particular members have moved on by now so today's Celtic Woman would be a completely different experience.

@@jamescurfman3284 no problem, if your watching more of there videos, its easy to tell there 3 outdoor performances by the stage Powerscourt - large house like building with the stage coming straight out from the centre of the building (as in this vid). Slane - stage comes down from the corner of the castle so the castle in the background is at a 45° angle and water beside the stage. Johnstown Castle - small circular stage with celtic cross style walkways off place in the middle of a small intimate audience in comparison to Powerscourt and Slane.

A conductor doesn't make sure, Musicians keep tempo. Musicians can very well do it themselves. He is there as a reminder and also to finetune during performance. If you have a good relationship to a conductor, you immediately know how you need to play the next part and you can go all in. It is a team effort an he is the anchor.

The 1990s in Ireland was all about Riverdance. Global tours of Irish dancing. Fell apart over the lead dancer wanting royalties for choreographed dance. So that largely died. The music director of that (the guy conducting in this video) show grabbed the blonde violinist and a few of the ladies from their chorus. Went and chased down some money people (including U2's agent) and put together 1 show for PBS. PBS went nuts over it and re-aired it a few times. Presto, money appeared. Lots of it. They've been going since 2005. To avoid the Riverdance disaster, they don't let anyone get too big. The ladies are swapped out every several years. Huge auditions for it, as you can imagine.

Conductors have to manage the ENTIRE orchestra, and make on the fly adjustments to volume, give cues to musicians that have tricky or important entries to make sure they're on time etc. You CAN play on 'auto pilot' but you won't be able to wring out every ounce of musicality as one without conductor.

Conductors are required, and were invented (just before Mozart's years), because they can hear all the instruments from where they are. Each individual performer generally only hears themselves, or at most a few around them. So there they are, a group of 3 on their own tempo and prompts completely oblivious to the other side of the orchestra because they can't hear them. That's why the conductor was invented. And probably more important nowadays, he's the front man for soliciting donations from the local public. Everybody in the orchestra has to eat. They all have to get paid. Gotta sell tickets and generally only to a local area. It's never enough. Donations fill the gap. The saying is the hardest thing about a conductor's job is getting it. Once you have it you earn the pay every day. Chasing donations, doing rehearsals, and then some flamboyant arm waves during performance.

I love Celtic Woman, and enjoyed your analysis of "them". But your questioning the need for a director/maestro is totally ridiculous. Realize that this performance involves the feature singers, a solo violinist, two separate choral groups and an orchestra (a lot of moving parts). If you think that they can all stay coordinated without any direction, then you're delusional. Also realize that this performance of "You Raise Me Up" is merely the finale of an entire live show. Another song in this show was "Amazing Grace" which adds a corp of bagpipers, including a solo bagpiper on the top of the castle wall... more moving parts. You can find that on KZbin as well.
