I watched this video the first time and when I started tackling the exercise, I found I was so lost when the backing track started. I was looking at the chord symbols flashing on the screen and changing, and having no idea how to deal with translating those symbols into scales/modes/licks, etc. on the neck. I watched the video a second time, and suddenly realized that those AREN'T "tips" at all, at 3:51... what they actually are are ** 5 soloing approaches/strategies ** for how to play over those chords on the backing track, so you don't get caught like a deer in the headlights, like I did when you see those chord symbols that start appearing on the screen when the backing track starts at 11:19 for you to play along to. Perhaps the most important realization to allow me to just start playing over the progression was to realize that in the first approach ("tip #1") at 4:11, you are simply playing through the entire progression using the minor pentatonic of the first chord through the entire progression (i.e. for Bb, Db, Gb, Ab, you just play Bb minor pentatonic throughout the whole thing). So, anyone who knows at least the "shape 1" minor pentatonic can just solo in Bb minor pentatonic, then in A minor pentatonic, then in Ab minor pentatonic, as that first chord of the progression keeps descending by a half step as the backing track progresses. At least that simplifies things and should help some folks to at least get started playing along with the progression, as only one note needs to be recognized, and just one pentatonic shape to use to play along with it. Other soloing approaches (or "ways to look at soloing") rely more on the ear, like the idea of playing a repeating phrase/lick (what's referred to as a "motif") that sounds good over and over again as the chords change against it, giving it a different "color" as the chords of the progression advance... Once one is comfortable with playing while the background music is playing and are no longer as concerned with the chords being presented on the screen, and just only really paying attention to the first one, your mind will start to settle down and you'll find it's no longer racing in a hundred directions at once trying to figure out what to do and what to focus on... At that point, you start to develop a familiarity with using that approach, and if you keep doing it, you'll eventually start to get a bit bored... and so, your mind naturally starts looking for a bit more of a challenge... and at that point you start looking for and considering other approaches as to how to look at and solo over the progression on the backing track... But you've got to get started somewhere, and not just feel overwhelmed when the chords begin appearing on the screen, and you have no freakin' idea how to interpret it, what to do with it, how to translate it into some kind of instructions as to what you should be playing, etc. as the chords just keep coming at you over and over like they do... So, to begin with, just look at the first chord... that's it... and play the minor pentatonic scale that starts on that note... and play that one scale over the whole progression... and that by itself will get the ball rollin'... That's what did it for me, at least... and I hope this helps someone else in figuring out how to tackle it as well... *Here are the 5 soloing "approaches"/"ways to use" the backing track* (or one you make up for yourself - cycling through keys a half-step lower at a time, as the example in the video above demonstrates as the progression you record repeats, to turn it into an "exercise") - *4:11** - Pentatonic Minor Scale approach* *5:16** - Change to a different Pentatonic "Box Shape" with each new key change* (in the example he says to "switch to Am Pentatonic... that would be like on the 12th fret", which is misleading. There are 5 Pentatonic "Boxes" (aka "shapes"), so, one of them is on the 12th fret, but using this approach to playing over this backing track, you could just as easily shift to the one that starts on the 1st fret, or the 3rd fret, or the 8th fret, or the 10th fret; changing to any of the other 4 shapes than the same one you've been playing in when the key changes using this soloing approach). Just jump to a different box shape each time the progression cycles down to a different key. (Hint: Of course, this means you need to be familiar with all 5 of the pentatonic "box shapes", and be able to easily switch between them first). *6:14** - use a repeating phrase ("lick") over the entire progression* (what's referred to in music theory as a "motif") and simply move the phrase down a fret each time the key changes. (this one relies on your ear more than anything else). *7:08** - start thinking ahead and playing in the new key a beat or two before the new key* *actually arrives*, it will sound really wrong, and then really right when the new key starts playing. (had to watch this one a few times to even catch what he was doing at 7:16, as it's only there for a second, and you don't realize it's "outside" the key, until the new key starts playing and you hear everything resolve... which some people may not be able to hear). *7:39** - just be "musical"* (??? - no idea what such a vague, ambiguous statement as that means) *The purpose of these approaches -* 8:04 playing over progressions and having the progressions change through a cycle of keys allows you to be able to practice "exercises" that might normally be boring, by keeping it interesting for your ears, and making your practice sessions more fun. Hope this helps someone...! ;-) BONUS INFO - One more approach that I often use when I don't have a backing track playing is to play the "exercise" or riff that I want to get under my fingers 2 or 4 times, then shift to a different position (i.e. "key") and then play the exercise or riff again in that position, as I cycle through a progression. So, for example - Play the lick on the 3rd fret 4x, then on the 6th fret 4x, then on the 8th fret 4x, then on the 11th fret 4x. or, play the lick on the 7th fret 4x, then on the 5th fret 4x, then on the 3rd fret 4x. This keeps it interesting, and allows you to practice exercises and licks and really get them under your fingers, while keeping it interesting for your ears, and you can play through a cycle 25 times, while "making music", rather than playing an exercise 100 times and boring yourself to tears waiting for your fingers "muscle memory" to finally take over. Wishing you the greatest success in advancing your musical abilities and bringing them up to the next level...! ;-)

You nailed it. Figuring the triads up down the neck are killer, using your method. Even chord inversions (the same notes of the chord played in different shapes around the neck. Usually 3 notes make a chord, The root note, 3rd note and 5th make a chord. In key of C (the root note is C), (3rd note is E), and (5th note G). Find all notes that make a C chord. The C note doesn't have to be bass note. Notes can be backwards G, E, C, played is still a C chord in the key of C. Learn one chord a week, (over the entire fretboard) backward sideways, upsidedown. Sweep patterns.

Very useful. When you initially demonstrated the exercise I immediately thought ''but what about the fact that you used a track?'' but was happy to note that you supplied the necessary track. As an added point - on KZbin there are backing tracks (in some cases of the original track) of famous songs with the guitar solo removed. This is also very useful. I can reproduce many iconic solos due to this - the latest was Easy by the Commodores. Some of my very experienced guitar playing friends were unaware of this so it may prove useful to your readers to know this.

Just know where your scales, shapes, and octaves are around the neck for said notes in key to be able to benefit from this exercise. Listen to other guitar players and create new licks different than what you have been doing previously. That's how to benefit with this.

I was in such a bad habit for years when id pick up my guitar i would go into the same pattern..alot had to do with owning crappy guitars that wouldnt stay in tone all that well after doing bends and just playing hard .i would pick my guitar up the next day or the next time and do that same pattern..one reason i did it was i could tell by ear when i would do the pattern if it was in tune or not..unfortunately i had to lay the guitar down for several years because i was having trouble with arthritis in my hands and finally in the last year have gotten my fingers and hands back after medications so i picked the guitar back up and omg...here i went with that same pattern ...2 things i did shortly after i picked up the guitar again was i bought a PRS and a clip on tuner ..but from time to time i still hit that pattern and im like w.t.h am i doin ..its all good now..awesome guitar awesome tuner so i yold myself lets change this now!!!.so i stay away from that old boring starting point ..it was discouraging me alot and i could tell it was really holding me back...and within a week of dropping the old pattern i was already way beyond and playing 10 times better than i ever had before..i enjoy your channel and you have helped my confidence alot..thanks for all you do...especially liked the video of u scaring your wife.or girl friend with the wireless system...hilarious...again thanks for sharing your knowledge. ..
