idea: grab a guitar, sit on the couch, turn on tv and watch while playing random mindless stuff. maybe try and play to what your seeing on tv but try not to focus on what your playing really. the guitar is really something for your hands to do while you watch tv. whats the point of this exercise? maybe its just hand exercise but maybe if you record all that mindless noodling you might hear something you did and be inspired to expound on some interesting notes you played.

Hey Tyler, have you ever done a video about buying a new guitar and what to look out for? See, I still have my first electric guitar I got 2,5 years ago and I'm looking for another one, but I have almost no knowledge about what to look for. I mean, I could always buy an Epiphone or Squier or w/e but there must be lesser known brands that are actually better. I have a problem that might be a bit difficult to describe, but you seem to be very knowledgable, so perhaps you could refer me to some helpful tips. Advance apologies for this long comment. I grew up playing piano,keyboard,and organ by ear. I discovered my piano talent at age 4, and am 33 now. Stylistically, I play mostly jazz, blues, boogie woogie, but the way that I vizualize a keyboard made it pretty easy for me to really learn the "ins & outs" of piano playing. I started learning guitar a few years ago. Learning chords and scales is fairly simple. My problem is that the sound I hear is vizualized as a piano. I can copy(and even create my own piano renditions) of most instruments onto piano. On guitar, however, I have a really hard time actually vizualizing the fretboard, so I am completely incapable of creating my own music using a guitar. I'm not even sure what questions I would have to ask, but hopefully you can understand, and at least guide me in a helpful direction. Peace&Love,Brother!

That 4th point feels a BIT too much like a cop out. True, you can go off feel, but thats... something that can also be gathered from the other 3 ways. Only difference is it's going off trial and error than actually being useful in improvisation/writing and actually understanding and seeing your patterns on the fretboard. Just tell people to learn their theory/intervals. Either way, great video, I've been using the octave pattern myself and its how I've learnt how to go up and down the fretboard and visualise/pinpoint intervals like the b7/1/b3/4 box shapes. Didnt know it had a name, but its helped me and it's very useful for improvisation and moving up and down the neck seamlessly..

Learn some genres and/or guitarrists styles, along with their common phrases and characteristics. Major scale modes is also a nice try. You'll see that your improvs are going to get these influences.

Force yourself to play in positions/patterns you're not familiar with - either in whole or in part... Join these unfamiliar patterns with others horizontally instead of vertically. Put on a simple backing track (1 or 2 chord vamp) and target triads/chord tones in each position (know each chord shape of a single chord) - spend time relating the chord shape and its intervals to your scale of choice.

when i used to try to write or improvise then i would focus on the root note of the section of the song. go to the fifth if its rock if music is enlightening go to octave. whenever possible use the notes that make up the chord to enhance the sound of the progression or help to move the song. anyway that's just a basic principal that i used when i tried....

i think those were just triads over the same root, but always an octave higher.

Take an Eform Bar chord and play the 4 3 2 string from that form the root note is the on the 4th string major 3rd 3rd string the 5 is the 2nd string or just visualize the Eshape /form bar chord and know you are playing a Major chord triad when using those 3 strings with the 4 3 and 2 strings. if you Make the common E form Bar chord you can see it for yourself. Hope this helps man.

When he goes to fret 10 it looks like he shifts to something that looks like an A chord in open position (would be an F up there) and then goes to the 12th fret (which is a G). I think on the way there he also modified the shape to pick up the F/A/C and G/B/D at 6 and 8.
