"A Night At The Odeon - Hammersmith" was a live broadcast by the BBC of Queen's concert at the Odeon Theatre in Hammersmith, England on Dec. 24, 1975. Of course, the title was a play on Queen's album, "A Night At The Opera" released earlier that year. This is classic Glam Rock period Queen with Freddie wearing his white, winged Mercury suit. Queen II, instead of the conventional Side A and Side B, was split into "Side White" and "Side Black", dominated by Brian and Freddie compositions respectively. Although some have interpreted it as a concept album, it isn't really a concept album but just a collection of songs with a loose theme running throughout. Freddie later confirmed this in a 1976 Sounds interview, citing that "it just evolved to where there was a batch of songs that could be considered aggressive, or a Black Side, and there was a smoother side". The "White" side is very diverse: four of the five numbers were composed by Brian, one of which is an instrumental. Freddie sings two songs; Brian sings one; and Roger sings the closing track, which is his only composition on the album. John played acoustic guitar on "Father to Son" in addition to normal duties on bass guitar (Brian was in the hospital recovering from hepatitis). Freddie composed and sang all six songs on the "Black" side. "White Queen" is from Side White and "The March of The Black Queen" is from side Black. (FYI - "The March Of The Black Queen" was "Bohemian Rhapsody" before "Bohemian Rhapsody" - kzbin.info/www/bejne/iaClfpuulMajlck.

My favorite live performance, period! Hard to believe it is live. Brian wrote this song about a girl in one of his college classes he admired, but never could muster up the nerve to ask her out.

"White Queen" was the song that made me love Queen forever regardless of the year they performed. I finally saw them in 1981 in Montreal - it was jaw dropping. I think any song from that live performance will not disappoint you - especially "Somebody to Love" and 'Save Me" which are incredible. For their later work, I recommend their concert in Budapest, 1986 - their performance of "Who Wants to Live Forever" is astounding. Thanks for reacting to this song!

Awwww the White Queen penned by Brian May about a crush he had on a girl in his Biology class!! He adored her from afar but lacked the courage to approach!! Very Tolkien IMO .. like a page out of Lord of the Rings!! 🧝🏻‍♀️👑🌙🌟💫 On the album, it’s part of a three-song transition 👉 PROCESSION/FATHER TO SON/WHITE QUEEN …

This is my favorite version of this Queen song. It is my all-time favorite Queen song. What I'm hearing from you is that you haven't seen much of them live. I recommend you focus your reactions on their live performances because that is where Queen becomes something extraordinary. Their live performances will completely change your opinion of songs that you think you don't like, particularly Radio Gaga. Fortunately, there is a lot of quality recordings of Queen performing live on youtube. Queenies will point out the best of the best performances, but quite frankly, all Queen performances are something special. The more you watch Queen live, the greater your understanding of what this band can do. You are already familiar with some of the music but there is so much more to know about Queen and I guarantee you that you will have an entirely different appreciation for Queen after you watch all the live performances. I recommend you watch Queen's 20 min 1985 Live Aid performance in it's entirety, don't split it up. You must experience it in one sitting as if you were there in the audience. It was voted the best live rock performance ever. Even if you don't react to it, watch it for yourself. Queen live does not disappoint! It's something everyone should see at least once in your life. It's just that good! Careful which video you choose for Live Aid. The one typically at the top of the search cue with 3.3M views cuts off the end and it really messes up the viewer's experience. If the video starts with the date, you've got a bad one. I recommend this one: kzbin.info/www/bejne/gqmpe5l3ec6Kq9k

I was just like you, liking the mid-albums, ending at Live Killers, too. Then, when I began listening to Queen again after _Bohemian Rhapsody_ , I *really* started studying their music and the guys. I am wayyyy deep down the rabbit hole and have learned so much. (Still so much to learn, of course.) On _Queen II_ , "The March of the Black Queen" is considered the older sister of "Bohemian Rhapsody," then right after, making up the three sisters is "The Prophet's Song." If we do add the fourth, it would be "Innuendo" - an exquisite song and amazing video. What's fun about _Queen II_ is how we can hear _A Night at the Opera_ in its infancy. Hearing Queen grow and change over the early years is a side effect I had not considered when I began listening from the beginning. The guys *clearly* knew what they wanted to sound like and worked their asses off to get it. And they never stopped changing, something most bands/musicians would never do once they hit their peak. Goddess, I love Queen!

Thanks! This is a truly astonishing live performance.. the interplay between Freddie on keys and Brian on guitar is "epic" lol -- not to mention Fred's vocals, and the drums & bass! This is a true precursor to what they would become.. and remains one of my favorites... (BTW, song by Brian).. Look forward to more from you...

Queen II is by far my favorite album, and is a huge fan favorite. But if you want something from later on to get a taste of how their style kept evolving, I reccommend something off of Innuendo, their last album before Freddie passed. Innuendo the song is like the popular one of the album, amazing amazing song, but another super meaningful song is The Show Must Go On, being that it was one of Freddie's last vocal performances and Brian wrote the lyrics but it was written with Freddie in mind and Freddie really feels it and owns it, not to mention the amalgamation of all their talents in that song. Queen released Hot Space and kinda just fell of the map for a lot people, but they knew that, and they tried to get back to more authentic Queen immediately after, so everything after Hot Space is almost perfect Queen in my books, highly reccomend their later catalogue

Sometimes and especially with Queen, its hard or impossible to play live some songs made in studio, sometimes live versions are better than the studio one's (E.g.songs from Hot Space) in this case I like both versions, but studio version gives me more goosebumps cause of acoustic guitar, multilayered chorals and guitar orchestrations... As a Queen fan...Queen 2 is my top album!

How about a reaction to the man responsible for Brian May's sound? That would be the legendary Rory Gallagher, who was happy to share with a young Brian the secret to his set up (Vox AC-30 and a Rangemaster treble booster). Take a listen to Rory's 1979 Rockpalast performance of Tattoo'd Lady and be prepared for 13 minutes of guitar heaven!

Yes!!! I can understand not vibing with all of their mid-late 80s stuff (though I LOVED Freddie's voice at this time and it was the height of his iconic performances), but there are definitely tons of gems in there. For what was called a true "return to form", check out 1991's Innuendo album, recorded during the last year or so of Freddie's life. The title track is sort of the youngest sibling of Black Queen and Bohemian Rhapsody, and "The Show Must Go On" includes some of Freddie's most impressive vocals ever (shocking, considering he was too ill to sing and stand at the same time and had to sing propped against the recording table). Brian was worried he wouldn't be able to do it - he'd written the song with Freddie in mind, and the lyrics are heartbreaking - and Freddie said "I'll f**king do it, darling", downed a shot of vodka, and "lacerated those vocals". For the 80s songs, ALWAYS do them live. "Who Wants to Live Forever" is one of my absolute favorites, written for the Highlander soundtrack. Check out any of the three recorded versions we have from 1986, though Budapest is my personal favorite. There are also two separate nights at Wembley.
