For many Canadians, it’s the most wonderful time of year. Christmas is a time to look forward to family, good food, parties, presents, #Santa Claus and the birthday of #Jesus. A time of good cheer and giving and love. But what about Canadian Muslims? Do they join in? Do they not? Dr. Shabir Ally and Dr. Safiyyah Ally discuss Muslim approaches to #Christmas.

Come Christmas, millions are celebrating all over the world, from Indonesia to Alaska, but come Christmas, muslims quarrel among themseleves, either to wish or not, this a wrong date, a pagan festivel and shirik and so on, to me this is fickle minded issue, overblown, with spins and twists, this was never an issue before, until the resurgance of Islamic radicalism and wahabism. Face reality bro, the Islamic world is in crisis, turmoil, wars, corruption, poverty, social injustice, parents selling of their kids, womens rights are gone, muslim majority countries are poorest and dirtiest, economic and technology we are far left behind, whereas these are areas Islam wants the ummah to improve and move on. But yet we are obsessed with 'I am better than thou' attitude, attacking and blaming each other. Salam from Singapore.

Allah (Exalted be He) confirms this by saying (what means):Many of the people of the Scripture (Jews and Christians) wish that if they could turn you away as disbelievers after you have believed, out of envy from their ownselves, even after the truth (that Muhammad صلى الله عليه وسلم is Allâh’s Messenger) has become manifest unto them. And:A party of the people of the Scripture (Jews and Christians) wish to lead you astray. But they shall not lead astray anyone except themselves, and they perceive not. He (Glorified and Exalted be He) also says:O you who believe! If you obey those who disbelieve, they will send you back on your heels, and you will turn back (from Faith) as losers. And:Say: “O people of the Scripture (Jews and Christians)! Why do you stop those who have believed, from the Path of Allâh, seeking to make it seem crooked, while you (yourselves) are witnesses [to Muhammad صلى الله عليه وسلم as a Messenger of Allâh and Islâm (Allâh’s religion, i.e. to worship none but Him Alone)]? And Allâh is not unaware of what you do.“

@@user-gy7bg1rv6o (Reported by Abu Dawud through a Sahih Sanad) ‘Umar ibn Al-Khattab (may Allah be pleased with him) said, “Do not enter to the Mushrikin (those who associate others with Allah in His Divinity or worship) in their churches on the day of their festivals, for Wrath descends upon them.” He (may Allah be pleased with him) also said, “Keep away from the enemies of Allah on their festivals.” It is also reported that `Abdullah ibn `Amr ibn Al-`As (may Allah be pleased with them both) said, “Anyone who settles in the land of the non-Muslims and celebrates their Nayruz (New Year’s Day) and their Mahrajaan (two non-Islamic Persian festivals), and keeps imitating them until they die in that state, will be gathered with them on the Day of Resurrection.” Fourth: Muslims are prohibited from observing the festivals of the Kafirs for many reasons, some of which are: 1. Imitating them in some of their festivals will give them delight and complacency in their falsehoods. 2. Imitation and similarity in external matters will inevitably leads one to imitating them and behaving like them in internal matters such as their corrupt beliefs, and being slowly and subtly won over to their way of thinking. 3. One of the gravest ensuing corruptions is that imitating the Kafirs in external matters generates a kind of love, friendship and loyalties that are incompatible with Iman (Faith), as Allah (Exalted be He) says: O you who believe! Take not the Jews and the Christians as Auliyâ’ (friends, protectors, helpers), they are but Auliyâ’ of each other. And if any amongst you takes them (as Auliyâ’), then surely he is one of them. Verily, Allâh guides not those people who are the Zâlimûn (polytheists and wrong-doers and unjust). He (Glorified be He) also says: You (O Muhammad صلى الله عليه وسلم) will not find any people who believe in Allâh and the Last Day, making friendship with those who oppose Allâh and His Messenger (Muhammad صلى الله عليه وسلم)

This is a tough one for me, because I'm an American-raised revert who grew up Catholic and then practiced paganism for a few years so pagan-origin holidays like Christmas, Easter and Halloween are big cultural things for me. I still live with family as well, so I naturally still end up culturally celebrating the holidays. For me, I think the biggest thing is that Allah knows what's in my heart, and what's in my heart is not worshipping false idols but rather participating in family/cultural events that aren't very avoidable.

The simple answer is that Muslims are not allowed to celebrate new year. They're not allowed to wish people merry Christmas. 25 December is a sad day when some people claim that Allah has given birth. @Juliette Irene , I don't think the "attack on Jesus Christ" thesis doesn't make sense and sounds something like a conspiracy theory. I'm not an American, but it seems in America's excessive political correctness and related pseudo-problems are more common than other countries, namely here in Europe. I know several Atheists and I work in a company with several foreigners and I never met personally anyone that avoids saying "Merry Christmas" or that has issues when someone else says it. "Holiday" can be used, but it's too generic if someone want to specify Christmas. It seems that the supposed "War on Christmas" comes from the idea that "Merry Christmas" would supposedly offend some people and retailers, such as Walmart, tried to reduce the word "Christmas" in the advertisements. On the other hand, Walmart sells Jesus Christ action figures (made by Tales of Glory), os the idea that "just don't say His name" must be wrong. It also seems that there are false stories about the "Christmas" word being banned in some stores. At least Snopes says that the "evidence suggests there is no actual conspiracy to erase Christmas" and «fear that Christmas is “under attack” has been a recurring, if not cyclical, phenomenon in the United States of America for the better part of the last century» ( www.snopes.com/news/2017/11/29/the-war-on-christmas/ ). It's like sharing false information on social networks and lots of people falling for it. That's not an "attack on Jesus Christ".

@Juliette Irene , now I understand your comment: instead of replying to what I said, you assumed I'm Spanish and wanted to make a joke instead. I'm used to that, namely by racist commenters. Probably you didn't read what I wrote. Probably you don't know there were some Portuguese kings called Pedro. The last king in Brazil was Pedro and he was Portuguese. It's equivalent to the English name Peter. In the Portuguese Bible translations, Pedro is an apostle. No, I'm not Spanish. I'm Portuguese. I was born in São Miguel, Azores, and I'm living near Lisbon. Do you need Geography and History lessons?

@Juliette Irene , now I don't see your comments, except the first one, but I received a notification saying you replied: "Pedro Couto Spain, Portugal same difference." English is not my native language, but that seems to be meaningless and it also seems to ignore again what I said about the supposed "attack on Jesus Christ". Maybe you don't believe in what you said. If you meant to say that there isn't any difference between Spain and Portugal, or Spanish and Portuguese, that suggests your lack of interest and knowledge or Geography, History, and the English language, which is unfortunate. Maybe it's better to educate yourself before sharing silly comments about other people, countries, and languages.

I just want to say that not all Christians around the world celebrate Santa Claus and we Do Not think it is part of Christianit ( it came from two countries'myths Germany and the USA with rest of the world taking on for fun). Though Santa was a real saint who gave to poor kids gifts secretly in New York back in the 1800s, it just a fun but not required part of holiday and some Christiabs chose not to take part in too For the most part it's a fun myth that's added to the holiday since Americans are creative in the arts- example: poems, storytelling, music, woodworking etc. Buying things for each other is not Christianity either. However, we used to make things for each other, especially things that one needs when the Christians were much poorer and less materialistic. Likewise, Christians also say that we don't know when Jesus was born for certain. Some think early December while others think early January so it was compromised Dec 25. Christmas has been spoiled by materialism and non religious people too. They practice it without believing

Though December 25 is the day Christians celebrate the birth of Jesus Christ, the date itself and several of the customs we've come to associate with Christmas actually evolved from pagan traditions celebrating the winter solstice. "Christmas is really about bringing out your inner pagan," historian Kenneth C. Davis told "CBS This Morning." According to Davis, Christmas was celebrated as early as the fourth century, suggesting that it had almost nothing to do with Jesus Christ. "In ancient Rome there was a feast called Saturnalia that celebrated the solstice. What is the solstice? It's the day that the sun starts coming back, the days start getting longer. And most of the traditions that we have that relate to Christmas relate to the solstice, which was celebrated in ancient Rome on December 25. So when Christianity became the official religion in a sense, in Rome, they were able to fix this date. ... There's a little discrepancy about it but there's no question that the fact that it was celebrated in Rome as an important day with gift giving, candle lighting, and singing and decorating houses really cemented Christmas as December 25." Another custom we can thank the pagans for? Christmas trees. Davis explained that the evergreen trees signaled the "return of life" and "light" as the winter solstice meant the days were starting to get longer. "They started to hang an apple on it, so little red balls on green trees - get the picture here? ... So all of these things celebrate the idea that life and light are coming back into the world, which is essentially what Christmas means to Christians around the world." Mistletoe, though, that was started by the Druids, who believed it was an all-powerful healing item from the sacred oak tree. "If you met someone in the forest you gave them the sign of peace under the mistletoe so people started to hang mistletoe above their doorways as a symbol of peace. This was such a powerful symbol of paganism that English churches actually banned the use of it," Davis said. www.cbsnews.com/news/the-unexpected-pagan-origins-of-popular-christmas-traditions/

The religious aspect of Christmas has become less strong over the years as it has become a regulard holiday. Although this aspect gives it its charms, many atheists celebrate it just because it's a nice holiday that can be celebrated unreligiously aswell. I think it's good in Western society where so many different cultures meet that they can share a holiday that is sort of indifferent to their religion.

Muslims aren't allowed to greet or wish christians by saying "Happy Christmas, Merry Christmas, Good Friday, Happy easter etc..." . Whatever may be the reasons and situation, Muslims (including the true follower of Jesus.pbuh) ought not to utter these words . Because it's completely opposite to Truth . Instead of it , in the intention of wishing christians to develop relationships, you can say "Shalom aleichem" which was a greeting uttered by Jesus himself in John 20:21 . You can have a conversation to do dawah , you can give Gift by presenting them a Translation of Quran or any other Islamic related books . That's the right attempt to approach christians . . . If you ever say "Merry Christmas", you are giving sahadha that Jesus the begotten son of Allah born of virgin Mary through holy spirit on the day of 25th December . Among this, NONE IS TRUE . So , it's a shirk to greet or wish christians in this way .

I have to say as a Muslim I disagree with him at a certain point. To honor Jesus phuh is not wrong but to celebrate him only in one month as the Christians do is wrong. Allâh swt clearly tells us as Muslims not to do things the not believing people do. We have 365 days a year to honor any of the prophets through prayer dua etc. we don’t need a specific month to honor Jesus pbuh. To see Muslims in a American country or not having their kids singing songs about the holiday taking pictures with Santa is all wrong because that’s a ideology that we just don’t believe in. It boils down to simply do you want to be Muslim and serve Allâh or disrespect him and his prophet pbuh just because your not in a Muslim majority country. Muslims need not to come close to shirk! To say Muslims should celebrate the birthday of Christ just because “everyone else is doing it” is the most alarming and stupidest thing I’ve ever heard a so called imam say in my life. As Muslims we don’t innovate new things that have already been legislated by God. For a Muslim to greet someone with merry Christmas is encouraging disrespectful behavior towards God. If someone is to insult God, what you’re saying is then it’s OK to encourage that? Does that make sense sir to encourage someone to disrespect God by saying sure I’ll greet u in a greeting that is associated to disrespect God and our beloved prophet Jesus (pbuh). AstagfurAllah there are sinners but then theres shirk and innovation which is on another level. This is on another level of sin (shirk) what this person is saying, plz beware of taking knowledge from folks like this.

This is a western Islamic approach to Christmas, because I can remember when Muhammad Salah had a Christmas photograph with his family in front of a Christmas tree, he was condemn and criticised by fellow Muslims.. All Islamic scholars tries to westernise Islamic beliefs, regulations and customs, but once you are in you can nerve check out.. Islam is like the western music " hotel califonia "

Why should do much theology go into wishing Christians on Christmas, it's a date celebrated as the birth of Christ, so how would wishing change that.

There is one thing for sure. Jesus was not born in december. I base this statement on the Quranic verse about the birth of Jesus. He was born in (Betlehem) Jerusalem and when Mary was gonna give birth God told her to sit by the trunk of a palmtree and eat ripe dates that would fall down for her. By this it would seem logical that he was born between July and october because thats the harvest time of dates in israel and since they would fall down, he was probably born closer to october than july. This is nothing more but a guess out from when the dates are harvestet but islam is about logic. ❤️❤️❤️

You can watch fatwas from this man but you might not be obeying Allah and His Messenger if you do so. So much of what he says genuinely goes completely against our religion. Please be very careful about watching anything from this man. Great alternatives are Ali Hammuda, Abu Bakr Zoud, Bilal Assad, and Tim Humble In Shaa Allah.

Good interview and it has that touch of Christmas. I suppose living in Canada gives that exposure to the joyfulness of Christmas. As a student of comparative religions. in my Catholic daily missal I have a personal note to say that 6th June is the birthday of Prophet Muhammad. It is also the feast day of St Norbert, bishop.

@@vengefulavenger1510 Thanks. Noted. Jewish people also celebrate birthdays particularly some special birthdays. Jesus' parents would have followed that practice as they were Jewish to start with. Prophet Abraham also did it. Perhaps need to research as to how it was all done before the birth of Islam. Arab Christians at the time of Prophet Muhammed would have followed Jewish traditions or similar in 7th century . We are in 21st century. Islam has spread world over incl Canada which now podcasts Quran Speaks. Christmas is on track. Peace be upon all of us - people of good will.

I love Dr shabir because of Allah, but I love Allah more than him and those who are more truthful than him in the cause of Allah, and i disagreed with him, in his fatwah he claimed to be,because he also disagree with the majority of scholars whom say you can't wishes happy Christmas because is like you're affirming their belief system, because he is making fatwah( judgment) according to humanity not Islam (which means what the scholars said about it).

How can this guy say that Muslims should be happy that Jesus is being honoured at this time of year. Allah our creator is being dishonoured by them associating partners with Him. The Quran says that the mountains shuttered because of them associating partners with Allah swt and these two are saying we should be happy of what they accuse of Allah that he has begotten a son.
