Following the ruling by the European court of justice to allow employers to ban religious symbols in the workplace, three Muslim women in Spain, The Netherlands and the UK talk about their experiences of looking for work while wearing a hijab. They discuss the pressures they have felt, the changes some of them have had to make, be it a complete removal of the scarf or adapting their headgear, and reflect on the complexity of their decision.

But I'm able to tell you how this is going with me. I'm not thinking anything but I'm FEELING disgusted by looking at hijab and all other covers. And I'm not able to explain. The "Dutch" woman might be right, it's like a wall standing between us.

@chocol8tsundae Well the point of the veil is to conceal. Women wearing proper veil does not focus on looks and yet they are the most confident women, they focus on modesty and piety. Their focus is pleasing their Lord and not men, fashion ect. and this is what makes them confident, they dont depend on what you or anyone else think looks better.

While I heavily disagree with that cleric's sexist remarks about a woman being a "jewel" that should be locked away, I'm not sure why these countries have such a big issue with a hijab (just covering the hair). Niqab I get, you can't see any of the face except the eyes, but why does needing to see a woman's hair have anything to do with a job? It's purely discriminatory and not something that reflects well in a democratic country. It's ironic if you want to enforce what types of clothes a woman isn't allowed to wear, that's no different than what conservative muslims would demand of a woman in a more conservative country.

Tom Smith it really isn't. I'm a successful IT professional. I've been to work in company logo polo shirts, jeans, star wars t shirts, baseball caps, trainers, shorts and flip flops without it affecting my work. Do you think Jewish men who choose to wear the skull-cap have the same issues as these women?
@dearone1
@dearone1 7 жыл бұрын
Tom Smith does not going to work naked deliberately target your race, gender or religious beliefs? Legitimately? Wearing a hijab does no one any harm whatsoever. It is a curious form of democracy where we tell some women what they must wear to "free" them.
@dearone1
@dearone1 7 жыл бұрын
Tom Smith "in a manner of speaking" is not the same as being singled out like Muslims are. Thousands of men are required to wear ties. Men are not being singled out, it is an outdated 'legacy' requirement that some businesses haven't got rid of, because they think it looks smart. It has nothing to do with a belief and the only thing it signifies about a person is that they are probably male. These women are obviously not talking about working with heavy machinery. One of them is a cleaner - I have seen many an office cleaner quite happily work in a hijab. Wearing a hijab, like wearing a yamulke, is a religiously motivated choice which has scriptural or cultural precedence. Unlike wearing a cross, for example, which has 0 mentions in the Bible. So yes - singling out these women is wrong, and denying them the right to wear the hijab at work, in reasonable occupations, is violating their freedom of religion. Wearing the hijab for modesty reasons is part of their religion, so legislating them into not wearing it is restricting their freedom to practice religion.
@dearone1
@dearone1 7 жыл бұрын
Tom Smith I am being obtuse? A drunk person is extremely likely to be less competent at their work. A cleaner is not more or less competent if they are wearing a hijab. A person going to work naked is contravention public decency laws, likewise someone who's religion might condone murder. If someone's religion condemned employment, they wouldn't be employed ffs. Stop using that example like it's anything to do with the argument. Any laws that prevent women wearing the hijab should not be there. Any workplace rules preventing women from wearing the hijab should not be there. For what it's worth, I also believe that dress codes in general are a stupid hangover from less enlightened times. So long as they are not intending to offend other people, and it does not affect the competency of that person at work, noone should be prevented from expressing themselves in all aspects of their life. If wearing a hijab is not considered professional, perhaps you could explain why Fatima Manji, a fantastic and well-liked Channel 4 news presenter, wears a hijab on the show? Especially bearing in mind that Jon Snow and the other presenters wear suits and ties. You are being obtuse. Just tell us what you really think - be honest and say that you dislike muslims and stop talking in ever decreasing circles. Oh, and for what it's worth - I'm saying that every interpretation of religion should be protected, so long as it neither interferes with the law or the rights of other people. I am proud to live in a country that protects precisely that.

Precisely. In Arab countries, they would be offended if Western women show too much skin. Why should we change our whole lifestyle and work customs? In the West we have our own identity and way of life, just like in Arab countries they have another way of life. If you don't want to change anything about your way of life, then don't move to a country with a different culture. Very simple. Grow up and be mature about it, instead of playing the victim.

Obviously its your choice and all, but stop trying to use logical thinking as an excuse. God commanded us to dress modestly, whether we like it or not, find logic in it or not, we should trust that god knows what is best for us and try our hardest to follow that. It just like any other commandment of god, like fasting for a month, or praying 5 times a day, anyone can come along and say there is no logic in that. But the fact of the matter remains that it is what Islam teaches, and so it is something we as Muslims should accept and strive to follow. And so you can wear hijab or not, choose to follow the commandment or not but don't try to bring logic into it. We are nothing compared to the Almighty and its pretty arrogant and disrespectful to say that his commandment has no logic. What on earth do we know, to make such a brash statement. Because hijab has been made out to be a state between 1 and 0. You cannot take it off for a while. There is a stigma attached with girls who used to wear scarf and then later took it off. If you cover yourself, either you have to do it at all times or you just don't. That's what I dislike about the culture of hijab. I am from Pakistan and most Muslim women use any scarf, coloured and printed, to cover their heads. Many of them don't wear hijab but sometimes cover with a "dupatta", which is a loose long rectangular piece of flowy fabric draped around the neck. Women just cover their heads when it's the call for prayers as it is considered disrespectful towards "azaan" if you have your head uncovered. Hijab is mainly a cultural thing, popularized by the Arab Muslims. Muslims in my country used to cover themselves with traditional clothing. That's why I don't like hijab It is just too restrictive and requires commitment, and if you stop wearing it, you always feel guilt and shame. I hate that a woman's faith is reduced to whether she covers her head or not.

My view in terms of the laws and policies of businesses: Reverse the situation. I couldn't go to many Muslim countries without wearing a hijab/veil/coverings. In the same way that people from non-Muslim countries wear a hijab/veil/coverings upon entering a Muslim country, same situation for these women in reverse. Many women of different backgrounds and even religions will wear a hijab/veil/coverings to respect the law of Muslim countries. If you don't want to respect the law in the country in which you've come to, then leave. If you don't agree with the policies of a business on uniform and work attire, don't work there. You won't find me visiting Saudi Arabia any time soon for reasons like this and I wouldn't want to work at a Hooters restaurant due to the uniform/attire policies. My view in terms of culture: Similar scenario once again. Westerners have their own culture which they are free to live under and promote within their own countries. If you come to any country and bring another culture with you, always expect there to be push back and backlash. If it were a case of everyone accepting everything from everywhere, culture as a concept wouldn't even exist. If you don't like or agree with the culture, don't put yourself somewhere where that culture is dominant. Example: I'm British and I would not go to Pakistan for this reason.

Hello, I beg to extend on your argument :-) It's not fair to associate culture with religion & suggest that those 2 words are entirely synonymous. We live in a world where our societies are rapidly advancing, & people can debunk old cultures if they turned & developed obsolete. However, Muslims particularly, cannot choose to debunk religious orders. Wearing the hijab- the command of religion upon practicing Muslim women- is not merely a culture but a statement that one stays true & chooses to be committed to a faith. In my opinion, restricting women the kind of clothing that they wear is not a progression in the 21st century, but in fact, a regression. Simply judging & streotyping them for a cloth over their head is absurd & it highlights the pitiful, negligible open-mindedness among people. We boast to be a liberal society, but aren't we being ironic if we choose to even control what they can wear. Isn't that a primary right, a human right & simply opression? Similarly, isn't it odd to be the only one in the Middle East wearing exposed clothing/ bikini in a land where everybody covers themselves up? People with social awareness will have conscience & will know that they are attracting unnecessary & the wrong kind of attention if they carry themselves strikingly different. Islam is rampant in different parts of the world, & will continue to be embraced by Europeans exponentially as it has proved to be a fast-growing religion, so shouldn't we also alter our views & biasedness towards the headscarf & grow to be more accepting & understanding? :-) I think an education on why different religions conduct themselves differently will greatly be beneficial in helping to establish respect & harmony in a society. Just my 2 cents & I hope that it doesn't offend you in any way. I stumbled upon your view & thought that I could share mine too so we can understand each other better & enrich one another :-)

peace be upon you sir/ma'am. It seems there's a slight mix up in the understanding of hijab that the woman in the video conveyed. Hijab is a direct commandment from god for women to dignify and protect themselves by covering up, not just a religious symbol. Muslim women wear it because it is a commandment from god that we follow, just like any other religious commandment. Hope this clears things up :)

Asha Mahamud: oh puhleeze, every religion thinks they're chosen and special, and every leader of those religions claims to have talked directly through a magical pipeline to some bronze-age mythical deity. That's how they traditionally claimed land ownership back then, by claiming authorization from their god, or claiming they conquered the civilzation that already lived,there and owned the land. Your particular deity said in the Koran you should be modest, too. So don't forget to add that you only BELIEVE that happened. You have no proof. No religion does. Interesting, how people bend their religious precepts to fit their own desires. Sad.

And by the way, this covering-up business isn't mentioned in the Koran, only that you all should be modest. Both genders. The rest was interpretation by imperfect imams, who certainly aren't all knowing. And the reason modesty was suggested in the Koran, was practical: Mohammed was receiving visitors all day and night in his own house, and as they walked by the women's quarters, they might see in through the windows, there was a loss of privacy, so different clothing was suggested. But nothing was said about covering entire bodies and faces, not was anything said about making women submissive, powerless, abused, second-class citizens. Men did that, later. Spare me.

WRONG TRANSLATION here's the literal translation: "The cleric was saying that women are jewels and if you have something precious, like a jewel; what do you do with it? You cover it to keep it safe. Like wise women should cover." Cover- not lock up in a safe. Keep safe- not locked up in a safe. You can disagree with that statement, and personally I do. But it's 100% not equivalent to let's lock them up and keep them in a safe. I disagree with that logic but I can perfectly coexist with it and see where they're coming from. I felt so bad for that woman esp when she cried, she's having her freedom taken away from her and pressured into dressing in a way she doesn't feel happy with for no reason other than discrimination. I find people who pressure women into taking off hijab equally disgusting as those who force women to wear it. Both can't respect a woman's choice, and both want to enforce their ideas of freedom and respect on women with no regard to what she wants. If she believed she's a jewel that should be covered, so what? Let her believe that and cover all she wants. She's not hurting anyone or forcing anyone to do anything. Why should that be something that threatens to take her job away and leave her poor and broke and possibly homeless. How unfair, esp from "democratic" countries.

The major objection to the hijab at a work place is that people who interact with you would feel more comfortable if they could completely see you. That is why we do not see people in work spaces indoors with sun glasses on. Also as the quran compels you to wear it, most people see it as oppression even if you do not. Women are forced to wear it and then it becomes a habit and then they feel uncomfortable without it. Any habit is difficult to overcome like drugs, drinking or gambling. So also the hijab

The hijab is a statement of loyalty to a devilish religious ideology, an oppressive social system, a source of immense suffering for the world (including the so-called muslim world as well as victims of muslim agression throughout 1400 years of history). It represents denial of the majesty of the Son of God, ingratitude for His sacrifice, and refusal to bow the knee to the Lord of history.

When other religions come to the Middle East we do not ask them to wear hijab in order to work. Here in Kuwait Americans, and other nationalities are free to wear anything they want. People watch you tube videos think that the Middle east lives like stone age. It's not. You just have to come and see for yourself and stop judging. Yes Saudi Arabia are strict, but that doesn't speak to the whole of middle east. Currently Denmark are removing all of the Muslim mosques and I have no problems with that because 1 country doesn't affect or represent other countries. Short answer, some people are like sheep they just follow what other people say.

I am watching some videos about wearing hijab and not wearing hijab. I converted 5 years ago and was happy to cover at first. I experienced different types of reactions in my community and also traveling. I am a white woman, and in my city the Muslim population is like 93% Somali. I am "othered" by culture, I am "othered" by my hijab and for some reason, especially some white males seem to think they can say any sick and hostile comment they want to me. I have been smiled at by white women, looked askance by Somali women, (maybe shyness?) upon greeting asamalieka I've often not had salaam greeting returned by Muslims of other races. Then there have been those few who have been just lovely. I began to develop a fear with anxiety of leaving the house. I was overtly made fun of at work by clients asking if I'm dressed for Halloween. Traveling was terrible with so, so often being taken into the back room to be searched. One time a white male came up to me in line and was so hostile he was spitting as he told me "no security is enough" for me to be allowed to fly. Living in the US as a white convert in hijab was a nightmare for me. It made me stand out, which is the opposite of what I want. I don't want to stand out, I don't want to be singled out. It seems to be mostly the white males. I am stealth Muslimah now, always modest, but no more abuse, no more anxiety. Why are people so threatened by a woman choosing to cover her hair? It makes me sad, and of course I'm embarassed to not have enough courage and inshallah I hope to have the courage to wear my hijab again.

@himikarahman9990
@himikarahman9990 5 жыл бұрын
Ok, so here's the thing. Back then, when Muhammad lived, child marriages were NORMALIZED. It was common, and everyone did it. Rich people, poor people, everyone got heir daughters married off very young. It's like a woman marrying a man now. Its normal and accepted. Muhammad was most certainly not the only one doing this, as they didn't see anything wrong with it. Now, with science, we know the detrimental effects of child marriage. But back then, they didn't have this knowledge. We can't accept it, but it was the culture then. Also, everything in Islam is based on choices. If you've ever actually read the entire translation of the Quran, you would know that Islam is founded on you picking right and wrong. That's why we believe in Islam that animals and humans are different: humans have the choice between doing good and bad, and animals don't. When you don't have the ability to fulfil that choice, (say you are getting forced to wear the hijab, like in Muslim countries-which is very wrong by the way) Allah judge you on your intention. Would you have worn the hijab if you weren't forced to? Women, as well as men, children, elderly, etc., all have choice in Islam, whether they can accomplish that choice or not.

I wonder if this would be less of an issue if the hijab was tied a bit differently so it looks more like a headscarf as traditionally worn in the west. If a suitably sized scarf is chosen it could give similar coverage, or only a little less, & though less women wear them now compared to in the 1960s I have seen women wearing them at work recently? Dont know, but just wondered if some women might find they can then get work more easily, without having to abandon their head covering entirely? Its just that people feel anxious around things that look unfamiliar. I just wonder if tying the hijab in a slightly different way so that it seens more familiar but still provides good coverage, might help a bit, or are employers going to object to any headscarf now? Would it be worth trying tying it more like headscarfs as seen in 1950s fashions, which a few women in the west do still wear?

Beauty is not to hide but to show off and a woman should not be treated like jewel like object but should be a human and do everything they want because they are the owner of their own body my dear ladies !!!!!! Understand your rights and do whatever you want until you do not take away other's rights. Think yourself a human but not an asset like jewelry for your male partner.

Ok I can understand why the first sister feeling sooo guilty about taking off her hijab 🧕🏻 but frankly speaking it’s perhaps the way that she is dressing now , sooo fashionably chic that gets wrong attention, despite the fact if u wear or not wear hijab. And the second one seem sooo confident cos she is lucky that this situation has not come her way yet. I’m not wearing it now cos read Surah Noor, verse 60 and really dear sisters I took it off cos of my own reasons and Allah knows best and I’d b the one only to give my Allah the reason why and I’m staying at home Alhumdulillah. Did it for twenty years and before that no one ever expected that from me from parents or husband. Today I feel and understand the wisdom and I have known that all these things are ordained from our Creator for our protection and self respect& for our husbands respect too, so I’d like to clear this statement in this video by saying , yes we are like jewels to be protected and cherished from the evil eyes and evil talk of people about our characters which damages the entire communities at large and our Religion too, not that Allah demands to evaluate who is better in taqwa/ God consciousness of course. So use yr discretion and decide what is more important, your husbands being your maintainers and protection and contributing to the family , or you trying to bring in extra, which is not Yr right in Islam to begin with , to create more troubles in your peaceful contented lives as good Muslims? I pray for all my sisters , hijab or non hijabis . Only Allah is the best judge of all for those who dress modestly and stay in the middle path. 💫🙏🏻😇
