When I wrote this song I had an idea in my head that it was about a particular thing. The feeling of "Get me out of here" that someone who encounters a person with full blown PTSD/CPTSD symptoms may feel.
Over time that idea has expanded and I've felt it's about more than that.
Today I recorded this version of the song in my van. It wasn't a perfect performance but I was enjoying it so kept with it. As I got to the last chorus and sang the line, "well I can't understand what's eating you man" and felt the words become me, the idea changed again. I imagined what it would be like to be the banker of the first verse who had a moment of realisation. That they were no different to the homeless person they rushed by or the "madman" with PTSD who had chastised them for pushing by on a Tube. What followed was, I dunno, improvisation? therapy? You tell me :D
We all experience trauma and it shapes us. I talked about this in Episode 3 of the Hometrek Project series and it's my view that we are in a time when there's a lot of trauma being passed about. It's also my view that the remedy involves us opening up more to ourselves and each other. In helping each other to heal the wounds and live unburdened by them, so that not only do we each get that bit closer to ourselves but also break the cycles of collective trauma.
When I sat down to write I wanted to use the simplest Cowboy Chords I could, these are about the first 4 chords anyone learns so I reckon I nailed that bit of it eh. G,C,D,Am7 and you could do without the Am7 too!
You talk all the time
And this might sound unkind
But you've nothing good to say.
Well I can't understand
What's eating you man
But I must be on my way.
To my home by the river or the life I lead at sea
My desk job as a banker in the finance industry
Where the sound of you whining will not follow me
The one thing I will leave you with is
Stay away from me.
Cos you're bringing me down
With your scowl and your frown
And all the shit you say.
Well I can't understand
What's eating you man
But I aint got time to play.
Cos this life isn't long enough to waste in misery.
I'd give you my advice if I thought you'd take a tip from me.
But the words won't go through to you and that much I can see
So the one thing I will leave you with is
Stay away from me.
Cos your head's dynamite
And you're about to ignite
And there'll be hell to pay.
Well I can't understand
What's eating you man
But I must be on my way, I aint got time to play.
As ever this was recorded with my Simon and Patrick Songsmith guitar and the audio comes from the camera mic. I do a little bit of audio tidying on these live in the vans but not a lot.
