When I lived in Korea I never went to any regular stores to get honey. It's impossible to find the creamy unfiltered honey in Korea, but you can find good pure local honey, where I lived there were many honey producers (Eonyang/Yongnam Alps area) where you could buy directly from the producer, but I usually hit up my local NongHyeop Market because they had a local Ulju-gun producers section with free-range eggs and honey and rice and certain veggies and fruit in season and locally made tofu, it was a pretty decent store.

I’d love to try that honey!! All the honey I’ve seen in Korea (even at small local markets in different provinces) seem a lot thinner in consistency than what I’m used to in Canada, and I haven’t yet found one I’m a fan of, taste-wise.

I'm from Canada and live in Seoul now. I always stock up on Benadryl (I have a nut and shellfish allergy). I also get stuff for yeast infections as things like monastat are hard to find (maybe TMI but important information). My parents are from the UK so I also grew up with some UK treats that are easy to find in some stores near my parents house in Canada so I always stock up on custard powder

Hi. I am going to visit Seoul + Busan in July and have a shellfish allergy. I heard shrimp is in many many things. Any tips to stay safe? Or items that I should steer clear from that I might not expect to have shelfish? Thanks :)
@huladancer1995
@huladancer1995 5 ай бұрын
@@twistedtippy22 I avoid most soup dishes since a lot of soup dishes use fish sauce and I don't like to risk cross contamination. Sometimes you can also find mystery fish/shellfish in soups. So unless you know for sure that it doesn't contain seafood, I would avoid soups/stews. Also, and I know it's sad, but kimchi. A lot of kimchi has small, salted shrimp in it. With Busan being a port city with TONS of seafood you might struggle to eat there. Because I also have a nut allergy I am even more limited so when I eat out I have a list of my allergens in Korean but I also choose foods and restaurants that I can cook my own food at (like bbq) or if it's a sit down place that might have my allergens on the menu I go with a Korean friend who can explain my allergies. Another friend of mine also has a shellfish allergy (she is more sensitive than I am and even smell/sitting near it can trigger her) and she has told me that she finds it frustrating that Koreans don't consider shrimp to be shellfish so she has to say "shellfish AND shrimp". Also, I'm sure you are aware, but octopus and squid are also no goes for us and they are popular so just watch out for those as well

whenever i travel to northamerica i go into a shopping frenzy-- for real: the variety of everything and anything is just overwhelming! i don't think I've ever seen so much in one place together. but also the size of the containers is gigantic. if you have a half kilo philadelphia cheesecream tub, you're going to need a big fridge as well- i feel everything is oversized... anywho, the market is so much bigger than my country's and there's so much more people that i actually buy there everything i cannot find in my own country or that is is more affordable (even accounting for taxes on foreing currency and my country's inflation)-- clothing for instance is incredibly more affordable, more diverse and better fitted for me in the US than in my country.. so i end up coming back with my suitcases filled with new clothes for me and the family

Shopping before flying back home abroad is always bittersweet. The differences weren't so drastic for me going between the US and UK, but before leaving the US I always stocked up on: huge bottles of ibuprofen and other household medicines from Sam's (we don't have a Costco womp womp), quality maple syrup, seasoning mixes and spices, cornbread mix, toothpaste, supplements, and any electronics/technology. Luckily it's usually a matter of saving money and taking advantage of the greater variety of things in the US rather than just not being able to find them in the UK. And no matter which direction I'm coming from I always bring local products (e.g. alcohol, honey, jam, coffee, candles etc) as gifts.

Back in the day before Costco & online shopping , when visiting the State of Hawaii it was always the candy that I had to bring back: Hawaiian Host Chocolate covered Macadamia Nuts. It’s the best brand because of their milk chocolate. It’s so yummy!! I’ve since developed a taste for the dark chocolate. In the mainland States, you can find the brand in Japanese/Asian markets as well as Costco. When visiting abroad, I’ve been asked to bring certain snacks and condiments from the States as well. You gotta have a taste or comforts of home, right??! Have a great week guys. Thanks for another great post 😊

Hi, it me, an American, we don't have those Ruffles flavors here and I'm jealous now lol. Cheddar and sour cream is where it's at here, though. For the tampons - I know you're probably taking space into consideration but I am almost positive you can get those in larger packs at Costco :) Before I yeeted my uterus, I would get mine at Sam's Club. I can't imagine Costco wouldn't have them too. Dang, Sarah, you are a tall drink of water! *cries in 5'2"* I have the opposite issue - all the pants here are much too long for me, lol. And the petites work great until I wash them and they shrink and then they're too short! 🙃

That's an interesting observation on the shampoo - back when I was in Belgium the shampoo was harsher on my scalp than the shampoo from my home country (granted it was a generic supermarket brand, so that might definitely play a part 😅🥲), and I have thick Asian hair. I never had the chance to use better(?), name brand shampoo there, that might have suited me a bit better, but who knows. Haven't tried Korean shampoo brands (I occasionally use Japanese shampoo brand), it will be different from what I'm used to, but surely not that different for me 🤔🤨

I second getting underwear, your favorite shampoo and conditioner, deodorant and preferred snacks. Hey Sarah, we’re you able to find that FDgard I was telling you about? People who have stomach issues like yours can sometimes benefit from this. Again, it is a supplement and gastroenterologist will sometimes recommend to those patients that do not have a specific clinical diagnosis, often classifying them as dyspepsia. If you go through lot of stomach meds, you should give it a try. I am not sure if they sell it Korea but it should be there in places like Walgreens in Canada. Some people who suffered a lengthy battle with stomach issues have found that it reduces or sometimes eliminate the stomach issue.

I always stock up on my yearly trips back to the US, wish I could get some of the Canadian stuff too.....I still have trouble finding the right deodorant even in the US - skin irritation, some that don't work as well or the right scent etc...... I live in Gangwon - so I even have to go to Seoul sometimes for clothes. When I go home to the US, I usually buy jeans, socks that aren't so tight on my ankle area, skirts at the length I prefer because they're either too long or too short for me, board games since I'm a teacher and they're cheaper and in English, the cheaper electric toothbrushes, and maybe a new ugly Christmas sweater since I always go in winter and enjoy wearing them to school to surprise my students....of course snacks cheaper protein bars and medicines

And if so, what was Kristen sent you from buying an additional suitcase just to bring back more of the things that you need for a sufficient amount of the big picture from Canada? Period. I’m not surprised they don’t have a lot of the snacks material that they do in Canada available in Korea. Korea has so many snacks already that are more native or indigenous to Korea. I’m not as sure about the cereal. Maybe it’s because cereal has become a recent thing as in the last 20 years or so. So the stuff that you buy how do you ship them back? Do you bring an extra suitcase? And how does that work with the airlines? Do you have to pay extra? Also…. About the clothes….. I am also a woman that is 5’9” and I also wear a size 10 shoes. so does South Korea have magazines to where you can order the correct size of clothing? It is my understanding that most stores will not have your size.
@2hearts1seoul
@2hearts1seoul 9 ай бұрын
We always bring an extra suitcase, so we have 3 large pieces of luggage in total for checked baggage. There are no magazines here to order larger sizes for clothes or shoes. For clothes, you can go to western brand stores, but they don’t usually have long lengths of anything, and their pants only go up to a certain size. You might be able to find a few styles online on the Korean version of foreign shoe brands, but you’ll likely have to just get men’s sizes.

I have two questions please: 1) What are Kyuho’s parents’, sister, niece and nephew’s favorite Canadian treats that you may have gifted them with? And 2) Is it true if you whip up pure Canadian maple syrup, does it really change color to a butter yellow color? Such random questions……sorry! 😊 I believe you’re both back in Korea. As the comparative of Canadian vs USA snacks go... that's a generalisation. If you look at Canadian brands (not American owned) the difference is quite stark. Here (Quebec), we have a natural "sweet tooth" (just like Koreans) but where you compliment it with spice (red pepper and other strong flavours); we compliment it with saltiness and spices. I am always saddened😢 by the way other's perceive us as not all Canadians eat the same things. In our province, we have a drink that is ONLY available here (as we adore this flavour) which is available in every grocery store, it's so popular that even these stores offer their version (under their brand name just like Costco has their own Kirkland brand). It comes under various versions: soda, non or low alcoholic beverages, beer and hard liquor. Korea has their version of this drink (pine bud from Lotte). What you have to also understand about the packaging sizes, is the fact that when these came to be a family size was generally 5-6 person therefore everyone had the opportunity of having their share. I can easily go back in time and see that ice cream for households in the 1930-1950 can generally in 10L sizes but considering that families here were 10-16. Those formats lasted maybe 2 wks😂😂😂😂. Now that you have single people, it is "considered" normal to have 250-500ml ice cream formats😂😂😂
