Today I show you my favorite modern distortions that give you the best sounds to bring the rock. There are hundreds, nay, thousands of distortion pedals out there, and these are my favorite from my collection. In the comments below let's talk about your favorite pedal from today, one of your favorite distortion pedals that I didn't mention, Soundgarden's Superunknown record and a record that introduced you to distortion and made you love it!

His best IMHO is the Meat and 3 modded Soul food. I got 1 used that was done in a homebuilt unit. Cheap at $83 and been on my board since. Surprised he didn't do the Butler Tube driver. That's on my board also as my distortion part. Mines been modded with a bias knob and I'm running at 18v. So it's the older 3 knob version.

Had “Badmotorfinger” and knew the next album would be beyond amazing. Got “Superunknown” the very day in came out and was blown away. Cornell was a genius writer, harmonically, melodically, rhythmically, lyrically, and must always be included in any list of the greatest rock singers ever.

There isn’t a project that Cornell touched that I don’t like. I wasn’t born until just before Audioslave (sorry if that makes anybody feel old) so I didn’t get into his music until about a year before his death. He will forever be one of the top artists I regret not seeing before they passed. His voice is just something you don’t hear in rock often and is just so special and formative to how I listen to music.

It's hilarious when a design engineer says something like "I like it cuz the knobs don't really tell you what they do." This is fast becoming my favorite Channel on KZbin. When a buddy of mine introduced me to Soundgarden all I could say was, "at last here are the successors to Black Sabbath." Born in the early 60s I didn't have a relationship to grunge and sort of resented the whole Seattle thing. My son's obsession with Kurt Cobain didn't really help. But this album and Soundgarden's Garden of sound opened my mind.

Boston's "Don't look back" riff leading into the choruses and the "Piece of Mind" track's isolated, distorted main riff after the solo. Over 20 years ago I heard those riffs on my mom's Greatest Hits cd when she picked me up from school one day in Alabama and I became a guitarist and rock fan that day. So cool to hear somebody out there still remembers Vitalogy. That’s a great way to entice me to buy that pedal. Also, good on ya shouting out *Superunknown*; that record and their follow-up were absolutely seminal to my development as a musician. As for the first album that really showed me the incredible things distortion could do, it had to be the first cassette I ever bought with my own money, when I was 8 or so: Boston’s self-titled. I LOVED the Tom Scholz tone-and I still do, to this day-however, when I personally first picked up the guitar at 11, I was drawn more toward psychedelic rock like early Pink Floyd and Blue Öyster Cult, whose formula was more like, ‘overdrive with atmosphere’. My gain stack consists of an inexpensive boost, a Crowther Hot Cake clone, a TC Bad Horse, a Big Muff Pi, and a DS-1. I’m looking for something small and with a range of mid-to-high-gain to top off the stack. Looking at a custom pedal made by TC in concert with Rabea Massaad (of Anderton’s Music fame) called the ‘Wild Fro’. I listened to a demo, and it does exactly what I need it to do, for its size and price. It even has a ‘More Gain’ toggle. That’s literally what I want on this pedal.

@@runlarryrun77 the Riot and Riot reloaded are awesome. I'm thinking I like the original Riot the best, as it has more of that classic Marshall flavor. I like to set the gain about 10 o'clock, then hit it with an overdrive.

Derrick Lugo This has been my main distortion for just about a year now. I think the name is misleading to some. It sounds like it would be a heavy metal pedal but it’s more of a classic rock Jmp/JCM sound.

Nice! Loved the Dr. Scientist The Elements and Strymon Sunset. I was on the hunt for a distortion gizmo for my JC-40 and saw a Fender Pugilist used at GC for $70. Man, does it do the job. Very smooth high gain with tons of clarity and harmonics. It gets really wild when you dial in the onboard distortion. It wasn't bad GC also had a Boss OC-2 MIJ black label in like new condition for $100. GC dude ringing it up did a double take. It was a good day!

The first albums that come to mind for me are: Attack On Memory by Cloud Nothings. I love the tones on that album. A bit of distortion everywhere. At some points there's more distortion on the bass than the guitars, which gives it an awesome vibe in my opinion. The guitar often has more of a bright, chimey distortion. Same thing with Grand Funk Railroad's "Red Album." I love the distortion tones on that album. Again, a bit of distortion and fuzz on everything, including the bass, which stands out beautifully. There's a pattern there.. maybe you should do an episode on bass distortion specifically! "When everyone around you is crazy and you're rocking out, that's what life is all about!" I love it!

I grew up in Tx. and was aware of Kings X when they were a new band. I feel like Ty Tabors distortion tone is one of the all time greats. It was literally ear candy live in his early days playing those Lab Series amps with chorus but the rate on zero for a spatial effect. Back then in Dallas I saw Eric Johnson and SRV together @ a place called 'Tango's' once per month for a couple of years. Two who are considered the best 'tone rangers' in the industry and still I remember they had nothing on King's X's live guitar sounds. Creamy deluxe distortion like my Bogner Shiva but better. What ever he did should be duplicated IMHO.

Good vid. Opened me up to some new ideas. I was a bit lost over your kilt pedal and the extra switch(?) I've collected ODs and Distortions for over thirty years. I still have the Expandora (mint!) and nearly every good one from 1970s-1990s. My favorites, though, among the ones easily found now, are the Xotic Atomic Overdrive, which does OD and distortion very well but especially distortion, Fulltone Distortion Pro which I list here because it does not sound, to my ears, like anything else and I love it for that, Gristle King which I think might be the only pedal I've ever found that does fuzz, OD, and distortion in a single pedal--and does them all well. Devi Ever Devistortion and 1990, both completely out of control, and for less expensive ones, the Dr. J Lancelot. The Lancelot too has a unique distortion sound I love. If I had to pick only one, I'd take the Atomic Overdrive but only because I rarely use fuzz and when I do, I want it to be completely nuts. Album--Black Sabbath, Sabotage.
