WINTER IN CANADA! The Good, The Bad, and the Cold...

Many people ask us what winter in Canada is like. How do we survive? How do our cars start? How do our pipes not freeze? For people who live in tropical climates, it's perplexing to think that we live our lives through -30, -50, and even colder for up to 6 months of the year!
We can see how this might seem crazy, so we've gone ahead and put together a video to explain how it all works!
(Subtitles in English and Spanish)
The winter is good, bad, and just plain cold. The good is that it brings immense beauty with nature covered in a blanket of white snow, as well as many activities such as skiing, snowmobiling, snowshoeing, and more. The bad is that it's very cold, icy, and sometimes just plain miserable.
You really need to find an outdoor activity that helps you enjoy the winter. Otherwise, you'll be in your home all day!

In those situations while shoveling the snow we just have to look up and see all our neighbours suffering through it the same! The mix of comaraderie and endorphins while trudging through the snow can be quite exhilarating!! Knowing that even if your car doesn't start or if your stuck in ice that someone is always nearby (granted you don't live off the grid) and willing to help is one of many reasons why I adore my country :)

@@DailyDoseofSpace. Your funny. One CM of snow you could use a broom to brush off the driveway. I bet after shovelling 2 feet of snow out of a driveway you would not be saying I could shovel all day. By the way, after you shovel the driveway the municipal road snowplough truck come by and you now have a 3-foot high drift of snow that will take you an hour of shovelling. Next day it happens again. If you live in Canada you have a gas snow blower, you put snow tires on your vehicle in November.

Very nice video. I’m really glad to see so many canadian winter videos popping up over the past 3-4 years. Winter has always been one reason I love Canada. I’ve lived in Edmonton my whole life, which gets to -30 to -40 for 2-3 months or so in winter, but It’s not real winter without severe sub zero temperatures and a ton of snow. I heard Calgary was supposed to get 60 cm of snow recently. I wish you two luck :)

I just found your channel and I'm honestly swept away. Your videos look very professional and they are so enjoyable, and the info you share are short and clear. I feel like I get the benefits of a pro documentary with the informal touch of real life people who experience the places they film to the fullest. I am very curious how the lovely Karla (whose wonderful energy pops out the screen) was able to adjust to such a different and extreme climate when she moved to Canada.
@MustDoCanada

Wow, what a thoughtful comment. Thank you. For all our latest videos where we go more into cities, towns, etc, we've been doing them a little more blogging style to suit the platform but I do like this style quite a bit. For Karla, it wasn't that bad. For the most part, you're indoors and when you do go out, if you dress well, it's not that bad. When it's super cold, none of us are used to it haha. But a big part is probably that she enjoys the winter because we like skiing, skating, etc and it looks beautiful. Plus, in the west, the winter is a dry cold. We were just on the east coast and that humidity makes it feel so much worse

I'd like to add: when it's below -30, any exposed skin will feel like little pins and needles are hitting your skin and then it will go numb and will feel stiff. When you breathe in cold air like that, you will feel the hairs in your nostrils freeze. Taking in a breath of freezing air can be very refreshing (unless it's when you're scraping ice off your car so early in the morning). Huge snowball fights at school were the most fun times one could have at school; but the teachers usually stopped us because they were scared that thete might be rocks and ice in the snowballs

Winter in Canada looks so much more preferable to the one we get in Sweden. Ours is almost no snow until late in December, and most of that snow just turns into slush. Maybe once every 3 years, we get a proper winter with temperatures down to -20 or -25 C. I just love it. The air doesn't get so moist and I can breathe better. I'd love to move to Canada when I get the resources.

try to get to Kimberley in the new year. when it's sunny and -10 or warmer, the sun pits on top of the ski hill are a blast. locals dig them out like tiered seating in a stadium and there are sometimes 150+ people from all over the world, sun tanning, live music, moon-shine and beer, and friends you never knew you had. you're only a stranger until you introduce yourself once.

To survive winter in Canada you need (if you can) a Canada Goose coat. It will definitely keep you warm. I’ve spent 52 winters in Canada & lived in Montreal for some of those years & commute to work by bus & it definitely is the warmest coat I’ve *ever* worn. It is pricey though. *Also try throwing water in the air & see what happens. Hot water is best, but be careful not to burn yourself!*

I love the cold a lot more then the hot, the hot is just so stressful and makes you sweat and ruins your clothes with humongous sweat stains, while the cold just sends a chill down your spine, plus I love wearing hoodies❤️

Hi Guys, loved the video. We visited BC and Alberta last northern summer. Had a great time in a fantastic truck camper. Here in Australia our winters are never as severe for most of the country. As with Canadians heading far south for your winter we try to head north for ours. Generally anywhere above the Tropic of Capricorn provides a warm to hot winter. Where we live it might get to minus 6C occasionally on a winter’s night. Snow is very rare. A pleasant winter’s day is around 12 to 14 C. Some winter I hear you say! Again thanks for the great video.

@@muktagaur4105 I'm not sure we'll be able to that soon, unfortunately. We will try but we have a bunch of videos we're working on right now. However, I would say it's important to have warm waterproof boots, gloves, and a touque. I don't tend to wear anything over my pants unless I'm skiing or spending significant time outdoors. A good jacket is good too, but at least you can wear layers for the upper bodyy. For general day to day activities, I just wear normal pants like jeans, light winter boots, jacket, gloves, and a touque or ear-muffs. If I'm out doing an activity like skiing or snowshoeing or something like that, then I might add thermal underwear (pants and shirt) and snow pants. You might want to check a thrift store as well, especially since kids grow all the time. Probably good deals!
