thats the best comment i have heard from a 12 yr old ever! You will grow in your business with your buddy in short order save your money from cutting grass and invest in a riding mower to help you with big yards it will change your mowing game .. congrats look on craigslist for unwanted mowers and see what you can come up with - perhaps you can venture into the repair side and selling of unwanted mowers .. keep learning .

Mustie1, you sir are my garage putting hero. I came across your page when I was trying to buy a riding mower. Money is tight so I bid my time, well last Friday I scored a craftsman mower for 50 bucks. It had issues and wouldn't start, but having watched your videos, I not only got it running but fixed a few issues. Thanks for everything!!! My full time job is A/V and working with lights, sound and video. I know Adobe video editing and event production. If there is ever anything I can do, to repay all the advice and actual entertainment, just let me know. Thank you sooo much

To stop deck rust, use spray wax, ideally at a self serve car wash, but when at home, spray wax from a trigger sprayer works too. And silicone spray, including silicone based tire shine, can protect mufflers from rust.

Yeah I saw a vid of how to troubleshoot using a probe, which I found at NAPA for $120, and they showed how to test fuses, but that seemed like alot of money to test fuses. I used a multi meter set on ohms, and found a bad fuse. That was after checking every wire in the harness. Haha, wish this had come out in March! But this explains some of what I don't know about electricity - eternally grateful Mustie 1 !!!!

I had an 80's Craftsman with a rear-exit deck. I loved that mower. A loose screw took out the deck belt one day and the replacement cost $180!! The blades in the deck overlapped so the deck belt was a toothed timing belt. At least I could still buy one but the belt cost more than I paid for the whole mower. Live and learn. Love the vids even three years later.

I've had one of these Craftsman with the same engine for well over 20 years and it's still going strong. All the normal issues manifested themselves such as the starter and steering mechanism. So far I've been able to do all the repairs myself. With a little help from chaps like yourself and of course Taryl Dactyl as well. Love what you're doing keep up the great work and educational video's as well.

Hey munstie, old skewl tip. Had an old farmer show me this one. Take a cereal box (Ones with wax lining) cut one side of the box, dip the carb part in oil, lay on box sheet. Remove it, it makes a perfect gasket print on the cardboard box, use a razor and cut the new gasket from the box paper. Repeat and stack for thicker home made gaskets. Add blue rtv, like new!

In True Mustie style I was at a yard sale today and the guy showed me a very similar mower. Said it needed work so I asked how much. Got it with a grass catcher for $100. Got it home, charged battery while getting ready to tear into the carb. For giggles I tried to start it and it fired and ran great. I have worked on cars for 30 + years but after watching your videos it gave me more confidence to buy small engine stuff.

Once you have established there is a good 12V supply, It is always best, during trouble shooting with a volt meter, to leave the ground in place and trace down the missing voltage as you progress through the circuit. It' is far to easy to forget weather you are looking for a solid ground or voltage. Remember don't let the smoke out. Good job.

It amazes me how some people abuse an don’t take care of there lawn equipment even if they spend a lot of money at purchasing.I’am talking about two to three thousand or more for a new lawn tractor , i have a2002 craftsman 18HP 42 in deck I bought new an it still look an runs like new cause I love taking care of it. I payed $900.96 for it on sale.Only problem I’ve had in the 18 yrs of ownership have been gas getting into combustion chamber, a friend told me spend a couple of bucks an install a fuel shutoff valve an problem solved.Another problem was deck blades would not disengage a little grinding on engagement pulley fixed that so it been a very good mower.

Rebuilt a mid '90's Montgomery Ward tractor last summer for a friend. Ended up costing me more than buying a good used one. Almost everything that can be worn or broke on a mower had to be replaced. Tires, spindles, rod ends, blades, switch, relay, belt, fuel pump, battery. The front suspension was hammered from running into stuff. Oh well. Had the same engine on it. The only thing that was good. Brought back some memories.

Had a thought while you were having connection problems with starter switch and was wondering if soaking end of connector in baking soda would work. Of course not as thorough as cleaning with wire wheel, but wouldn't have to worry about breaking connectors. I'm in Bath, NY since you wanted to know who was watching. I'm fine with how you do your videos. Learn and relearn a lot. Amazing how much I forget over the years, lol.

My craftsman tractor is 27 years old and still going it has taken various donor parts over its lifetime from craftsman mowers alongside the road! The one thing I had trouble with this year is it wouldn’t shift or it was very difficult to shift🤔🤔After dropping the transmission, I opened up the case and the grease they had use dried to a solid so none of the parts had any lubrication!! I cleaned it up and added some EP 80-90 gear lube.......just enough so that about 2/3 of the bottom case half was wet SHE RUNS AND SHIFTS better than new tell you if you’ll have a little bit of skill you can keep these old craftsman alive forever great machine!❤️🇺🇸❤️🇺🇸❤️🇺🇸❤️🇺🇸❤️🇺🇸❤️🇺🇸❤️🇺🇸❤️🇺🇸❤️🇺🇸❤️🇺🇸❤️🇺🇸❤️🇺🇸❤️🇺🇸❤️🇺🇸

I have the same mower and the battery went bad after about 3 years, expected. HOWEVER what was not expected that it stopped me in the middle of mowing my yard. I think there is more to this electrical system on some of the other models with other engines. Safety systems and switches. Craftsman does some weird shit with safety switches. I have replaced every switch and the starter, ignition switch, and the safety switch that tells that belt take off is all the way down. I saw you test the output of the charging system on that Briggs and Scrap iron and I would like to see more on how that works. I have never seen that. All of the motors in these small engines have a charging device. Would be nice to know more about them. Love the videos…. Keep them coming.

Love your videos, Mustie-please let your viewers know that you can never jump start a mower with a running car-the charging current from a modern car will burn out the rectifier diodes, or worse, the alternator coil- if it must be jumped, be sure the car is off-better yet-buy a new battery-much less expensive than a new charging system-thanks again!

I use my baking soda blaster to clean terminals, then give everything a liberal coat of dielectric grease to prevent it from happening again. Rarely do the safety switches go bad, tho it can happen. Mostly a no crank problem is solenoid or key switch. Usually the first place to check is at the solenoid, as you did. Then work back from there. Crapsman was Roper, then AYP (American Yard Products), and now Electrolux (yes, the sweeper company). Same as Poulan and Husquvarna.

Honda has taken you under their wing! Kudos dude. Honda is the best. And I was a Yamaha (dirt) gone Kawasaki (street). The only reason I did not grow up on Honda was because they made four stroke dirt bikes. Back when the technology and EPA and my crotch said "two stroke!!". I liked the power band. Now I am grown up. And so is Honda. Awesome company. Nothing like 4 valves per cylinder. And valve timing.....etc. Don't get me going on their outboards. Did you know the Odyssey was a Go Kart? Not you, Mustie, I KNOW you know. :-)

I'd organize parts in boxes according to parts and make. Keep parts organized along with their mated parts. Buy float bowl gaskets and head gaskets and spark plugs etc. in bulk to have a stock supply. Get equipment in good condition and sell the best equipment for the highest price. Do a leakdown test and maintenance check on each piece of equipment. Put mothballs under the covers to get rid of rats.

You can take it for where it comes if you want, but if everything is working right, I would grease it all, tune it up then drop the mower deck and clean that and repaint it, then give it a nice shine and see it for a 150-200 dollars. In North Jersey we can get that much if it is in nice shape.

Lucky dog! I'm glad you got one fixed and still have a parts mower. But about the running water thing at the end...I gotta go! Greg

For the solenoid, I normally swap them for one from 1980-90something ford truck that you can get from pretty much any junk yard for very cheap. Can take more of a beating and will last longer. It doesn't have the second terminal for the safety, but you could use a secondary relay to retain it if you wanted to.

Spray the used motor oil on the deck and you'll get a good 3-4 seasons out of that thing. Nice work Mustie1.

A tennis ball or racquet ball with a hole in each side works for blowing out gas tanks or priming them. One hole is for the air compressor nozzle the other side to direct air into the tank. And the ball gives you a decent seal.

Mustie1, I logged on, just for this. I'm listening to Rush on radio and an add comes on, ready "Mechanic in a Bottle", your mower won't start? Mechanic in a Bottle, cleans your fuel and your carburetor, off you go ! lololololololol

Nice fix. It reminds me of an older version of my Ariens mower.
