I went with a friend who had a lead on a big car stash, well he went home with none but I grabbed two cars that have been off the road since the 70s, this one is powered by a 1.8L porsche engine that has been stuck for who knows how long, well I love the body style and had to have it. lets see what I got us into and what it will take to get it back on the road,

There are many things to regret about this year but a highlight for me has been, on the back of a fubared chainsaw in March, I discovered this channel. I’ve learnt so much and received such pleasure from watching your videos that I wanted to say thank you for everything you do and wish you and your family a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year! One particular highlight was going back and watching the “new shop” videos from last year. You really do deserve everything that has come from your hard work. Long may it continue.

What a nice, honest-sounding comment.😁👍 I found the channel through a KZbin recommendation, one of their better ones. I've watched everything for the last year or so and I'm working my way, very happily, through the earlier episodes too. I'm no mechanic but I've learnt a helluvalot from Mustie. Come the new year, I'm planning on stripping down my first carb, if I can find one lying about somewhere. I've got absolutely no use for a carb, working or otherwise, just interested to get my hands on one. One advantage of having no vehicle, just a carb: I'll be able to use the kitchen table.😁

I have successfully done a ‘down and dirty’ hone on several beaters with the jugs in place using 100 grade emery (carborundum) cloth around the bores. The motors were never going to last 100k miles but the compression recovered and it bedded the rings in real quick! Also stopped the smoking, so all good! 🇦🇺 btw, done with the pistons in place at BDC.

Pinball machine flipper coils were used to operate the door latchs in the doors. To open the doors you put the key in the key hole and turn the key. That closes a switch contact causing the coil to energize and pull the door latch inside the door. Somewhere hidden on the car you will find a power plug that is connected to the door coils so you can open the doors if the battery is dead. When you hit that connector with 12 vdc you'll hear the coils fire and the doors unlatch.

Hopefully they used Williams coils. Not knock offs, old Stern, Bally (even this Williams owned both) and especially NOT Gottelieb garbage. Wait. That car is from the 70's so most likely they used mechanical pinball coils which were way more heavier than digital pinball coils. I won't even repair them today. I just give a 4 hour class in troubleshooting and repairing them to owners with the mechanical abilities to spend a hundred hours or more fixing all those friggen' leaf switch's and other crap. I always tell them to sources a large stash of switch blades, white plastic initiators and other switch parts as the originals often have lost their ability to stay adjusted. They just take to much time. Not to mention how many bozos have tried to clean the gold contacts with Emory boards and metal files when you're supposed to use pencil wedge erasers or points cleaner soaked semi rough stock business card.
@n4zou
@n4zou 3 жыл бұрын
@@ronaldheit196 There was a DIY article in Dune Buggies and Hot VW's magazine detailing how to make and install that electric door opening system. A few months later someone came up with a kit of parts you could order in the classifieds section of that magazine. I actually installed a few of those kits for customers back when I had a VW shop. I never liked the idea myself. I got out of the VW business when they became collectable and valuable. I was in it because they were cheap fun. After that article in that same magazine deemed air cooled VW's collectable and valuable everything exploded in cost by at least 400%. A few months later prices went even higher. I sold everything I had. Tooling, parts, and vehicles I had acquired. My bank account got very fat LOL. I've never had another air cooled VW. All the fun ran out after the costs of everything exploded.

@@mikeschillinger4427 It is sad indeed. That's one of the reasons I quit VW's. Suddenly my 32 window VW van was worth way too much to drive, and where's the fun in that? I had dragged that van out of a back yard and paid nothing for it at the time. The Lady that had it wanted it of of her yard because her Husband had passed and he was just using it as a storage shed. It is truly amazing the amount of genuinely valuable AND desirable "junk" as well as vehicles that you are able to get for little to nothing. I am in awe and somewhat envious of some of your projects. You are an actual healer of mechanical artifacts. You have my utmost respect. That is one beautiful kit car. I had a deal going on an Avenger (3/4 built, no engine/trans) about 25 years ago and on the way to get it (about 2 hours drive) I stopped to grab a bite and call the guy to tell him I'd be a little early. He said he sold it to a local guy about 30 minutes earlier and the deal was off. I am so glad you are able to grab things relatively close to your shop/house. Pickings aren't that good where I am in NC, that or I suck at finding them.

That sucks. I can relate. Two years ago me, my wife and our kids headed to a used dealership to purchase a Corolla in good shape. I had called the guy the day before to set an early appointment, we drove an hour to get there, got there 15 mins early and he told me another couple was looking at the car. We went to get a bankers check for the amount and when we came back the other couple was filling out the paperwork. Was pissed. Didn't even apologize, just tried to sell me another car. Kept my composure, though, since the whole family was there.

I too think that the engine was just stuffed in there to sell the car. Or maybe it had some sort of trick or more valuable engine was taken out and replaced with that clunker. I was a engine mechanic in a wrecking yard for 32 years and saw cars and trucks come in from people who had swapped the engine or other items and also collected the insurance money. I remember once we got a El Camino with a 327 engine the had a different colored intake on it. When I started it, it went wide open throttle and blew up instantly before I could shut it down. When I tore it down for parts, I discovered it had no intake manifold gaskets.

I think youre right. They probably removed the valueable engine from this car and stuffed in a junkyard engine which sat in the rain for quite some time. I dont think that engine swap had a big impact on the selling price of that kitcar. But that way they were able to get more money from it by selling the car and the engine separately. Just a guess from my side, tho.

Really like this project. It has a lot going for it. There is an unusual chassis, a little historical content, some mystery components, and two engines that require sorting out, for a happy ending. This is good stuff. Thanks Mustie.

I should of known you had a engine hiding some where 😅. I have only been. Watching you for about 7 months so I'm behind on your shows. But you are the best thing on KZbin. Your like the Mr. Roger's of the garage. Your always so calm and you make me feel like your talking to me. The way you make sure we see everything and ask a question at the camara like we're answering your questions. I will let you know I do answer them.

Hi Mustie, All the best for xmas and the New year from the UK. I lost my job in May, and found your channel by accident. I have been watching it ever since. You have inspired me so much that I now have a new workshop and tinker with small briggs engines etc. Keep up with your amazing channel. Rob.

Hi Mustie I cannot over emphasize how important the cooling will be those deflector plates under the cylinders are and then the engine seal between the body and the engine.Just remember this motor drew its cooling from vents behind the side windows when fitted to the kombi, The primary cool;ing fan sucks its air just above the silencer and if the engine seal is inadequate it will overheat, Kind regards Nev

Good call on putting the first motor to the side. Other than cutting the jugs and pistons off on one side there is no way to separate the engine halves. Cool you had another motor for this project. Other than it needs better bumpers cool looking car👍

A high school buddy had a summer job pumping gas at a full service station. Fluid levels were checked in all the customers' vehicles as a courtesy. I don't know the outcome of his topping off the water in the "radiator" (oil fill) of the convertible Corvair full of cute girls, but this engine may have suffered the same good, but dumb, intentions. I don't know of any LTR that resulted from the encounter, I suspect it was a Darwin dead-end!

As a teen (early 60's), I loved pulling into gas stations (all were full-serve then) with my '29 Model A, and watching them hunt all over for the gas cap. It was on the cowl right in front of the windshield.

A few years ago I worked on getting a 1981 Cimbria SS kit car up and running with my sons high school auto shop class. It had horrible the gull wing doors, VW Beetle pan and trans, with a late 70’s GM 3.8 v6. The foot wells by the pedals, were so small and pushed to the left because of the giant tunnel in the middle, I couldn’t drive it. I’m looking forward to seeing how much bigger your car will be inside. Good luck!
