I bought my Ultimate Apex back in the 80's and still use it. Since it's an older edition, current replacement parts don't fit. As such, the only mods have been ; a permanent metal handle and a side mount for a clamp-on ipad holder. The legs are a bit hard to work but given the age, that's ok. I also had to re-glue some new rubber on the arms (used no-slip mats that are made for kitchen cabinets).

I have two Spider Pros, and I am totally happy with them. You can get an extra pair of arms (either straight or angled) for the Spider Pro, and each of mine has three keyboards on it. That's a little tight, but totally usable, and the middle keyboard can be used standing or seated. Even through two of the keyboards on each are 88-key, heavy flagships, they are rock solid and totally stable. Th extendable arms are essential to make the 3-keyboard layout work, especially with big heavy keyboards. The construction quality is exceptional. I can't recommend these enough. They are the best stands that I know of.

It comes down to how much you value your gear. I use two boards live with a combined cost of over £4000 if I had to replace them. Spending £200-£300 on a keyboard stand is an no-brainer for me. I used a Ultimate AX stand for years but found the stand would easily rock forwards. There is a little slidey-wedge thing at the bottom of the stand you can position to help this but unless the stage I was playing on was flat, it always caused me problems.
@xroadie3 жыл бұрын
I have a Spider, and after a few years, the wing nuts are stripped. The weight of the keyboard keeps the arms in position fairly well, but it would be great to have them actually fixed. Also, some of the rubber has come off the arms, not a huge deal. Finally, don’t waste your money on the K&M “carrying case,” it’s a fabric bag, with a medium-duty zipper and thin webbing straps. It’s just a way for me to keep my mic stand with the stand. The Velcro interior straps went first, then ho,es rubbed through the fabric, and now, with a broken zipper I would be better off with a canvas wrap. Save your money and buy a second-hand golf bag or ski container. Finally, about the arms, their attachment has become unstable, so it takes a little finessing to make the arms line up to make the keyboards level. Don’t get me wrong I love the stand, I just wish I could get it refreshed. I don’t have the cash to buy a new stand every 5 or 6 years. I am a cheapskate.

Great Review, Proper knowledge. Thanks for posting. I use the Ultimate myself, playing live gigs 4 nights a week I found the legs are the weakest point. Although they certainly take the weight, the button that drops the legs in particular is temperamental after a few years of use. However, the stand has never let me down and holds two heavy keyboards and a mic boom very well. The gig bag Ultimate sell is underwhelming and won't last you too much time if you're a working musician.
@frooke22 жыл бұрын
The K&M looks like the best but I bought the Ultimate because it's about 1/2 the price of the K&M. Today's price for K&M was $500 USD out the door with tax and the Ultimate was $275. Thanks for the video review. I was thinking I might make a custom plywood pedalboard with weights underneath to put overtop of the base of the Ultimate to add stability.

Thank you for a great review and presentation! I used the Ultimate Apex for years without incident. Very reliable, and a cool look onstage. Always had a two keyboard rig. Very heavy and substantial 88key Alesis on the bottom, a Moog Source, DX7, or Prophet 600 on the top. Later on it was a Yamaha Motif 61 key, Alesis and Yamaha for quite a while. I'm primarily a guitarist that doubles as a keyboard player. More recently I started using a Roland Jupiter 50. I started using an X stand. I never liked the feet on the Apex, or other column type stands. As you mention, its the pedals. The X stand isn't much better for that either. The Roland though is so light ... I still am using this set up for band rehearsals. The Roland has all the sounds, (minus any useful tweak-ability). Passable, quality sounds. Banks of four, instantly available. The band I am in now though is VERY B3 and Piano Oriented. I felt the need to upgrade, and found the Yamaha YC73 my best option. 20 banks (live sets) of EIGHT instantly available sounds. A comprehensive drawbar organ/Leslie section, and two synth engines. Yamaha pianos, FM sounds, Motif and Montage sounds, all there. PLENTY of switches, knobs, etc, for live tweaking. Not to mention separate amp AND reverb sections, PLUS a master eq at the end of the chain. I opted for a stand from K&M: www.k-m.de/en/products/keyboard-stands/keyboard-tables/18820-table-style-keyboard-stand-omega-pro-black?c=171 . The 18820. It is a table type stand. Collapse-able. VERY sturdy!! Height goes low enough to sit, high enough to stand and best of all, pedals easily accessible. My guitar mini pedal train plus keyboard sustain/ expression pedals fit easily!! With the K&M 18817 universal holder and adapter 18814, I can attach my Peak iPad holder plus a K&M mic boom. Good to go!! If I had still a two keyboard live rig, I'd probably go with the Spider Pro. But for me, the K&M 18820 does the job! 😎

Just a pointer about the K&M, the arms can lock in un even, making the keyboard unlevel. So you have to mess about with the adjustment and the arms so that they lock level. Also for weighty synths, like very High end 88 key stuff, ( kronos, etc) it will take it, but i think personally its on the very limit. I have a Kurzweil K2600XS sitting on the bottom tier fully extended out.

I do have one critic on your time it took to set up the ultimate stand. You took your time pulling out each individual Tribar and placing it on, but then when you showed later in the video how the tribars connect you grabbed two at a time. I have used an ultimate stand for 20 years and have never once pulled out one Tribar at a time. I pull out two at a time and then install them together. I think if you did that you might actually find that it takes less time to set up that stand. I am not trying to dis the other two stands. I would love to test out the K&M stand, because they make quality gear. I just wanted to point out that most people would set the Ultimate stand up faster because they would place two tribars on at the same time instead of one.

I have been using the Ultimate Apex for the last 15 years but I have my problems with it. This type of design isn't friendly to having a pedal in the middle as it gets in the way. The other thing I don't like about it is the CHEAP-ASS rubber grips glued on the arms which SHRED and leave shavings all over your floor after wear 'n tear. The structure is road-worthy but the GRIPS are not. I honestly don't recommend column stands in general. They are good for most players but if you've got expensive gear you don't want to ever drop, all it takes is someone knocking the end of your keyboard to tempt fate. I play two synthesizers (Dave Smith Prophet '08 and Dave Smith Oberheim OB-6) which are very similar in length and I don't believe these stands allow you to change the ANGLE of the stand such that you can adjust spacing on how your two keyboards are staggered. I need to be able to easily reach the keys on my lower synth. Can anyone recommend a rock-solid double table-stand where I can adjust the horizontal spacing?

Good video.I've just changed from a Adam Hall column Stand to Quiklok QLY 40 with a top tier. Rock solid and easy to move around for gigging. I have to say though I'd go for the spider pro out of these in your video

That's a nice sounding setup! I'd like to do a video on more tabletop style stands sometime!

Apex 48 now has a round back which rolls off the cart. If you place the stand on its side with any force, you can easily crack the top cap assembly holder for the legs inside the tube. I went through two in the last year. Called support customer service, then emailed them, no reply. Bought the top cap assembly from a third party. Legs became unstable after 9 months. The protruding handle is useless as the center either balance for the stand is where the keyboard world go. The old triangular design was better built and more logical. Sadly, K&M has jumped in price in the US. $800USD.

Notice the body of the stand on this picture of Vince Clarke from an old magazine: erasurebible.wordpress.com/2016/02/22/vince-clarke-cover-contents-detail-article-usa/ This made me buy one. Idk, but there was a quasi mythical feel for me to play on that stand, like offering a sacrifice on the altar of the gods :D Funny what inspires us sometimes.

@ChrisMutchJones Жыл бұрын
Sorry about that! I’m 6ft exactly. So that’s around 180cm. But crucially the stand allows you to move the position of keyboard almost to any height possible so you could in theory set them all very low and have more than enough room for three tiers! Hope that helps!

Makes me wonder now. Spider pro or Stay tower 1300/2?
@ChrisMutchJones6 ай бұрын
It really depends on your use case! The spider pro is more modular, allowing for more accessories to be attached and I think it’s more portable too! The stay tower is probably more robust and less ‘wobbly’, it also holds a heavier weight all in. Hope that helps!

@@ChrisMutchJones cooool man!! Especially the Stay Tower series, I'm very intrigued with their stability. I've read in some keyboard forums of how some Spider Pro users switched to this stand. They look promising, but I wonder if they could support the weight of an 88-keyboard (say a Yamaha Montage 8), much better than the Spider Pro in terms of bounciness. =)
@EduardoBach014 жыл бұрын
@@Phantorion Wonder no more! they are work hoses man. On the piano tower models you can easily put a Montage 8 or Nord Stage, it supports 65kg per pair of arms.

@@EduardoBach01 thanks man that is so awesome! That's the only thing I'm looking out for, the 'wobble effect' when it comes to stands like these. Thanks for the info. I'm thinking of getting the white tower, it looks so hot. :8)
@EduardoBach014 жыл бұрын
@@Phantorion In Brazil, where it's produced and from where I come from, everybody uses Stay stands. I have the Stay Piano model, it has some tinny little wobble, but it comes from the rubber feet, and side to side also minimal, it's just mass. The good thing about the piano model is that it's very gravity oriented, I assume if you put a heavier keyboard it will glue even more to the ground. My rig is all white, yeah, it's sexy!

@ChrisMutchJones2 жыл бұрын
I prefer the Spider Pro, but if I was only going to be sitting, I would get the baby version, because it’s not as tall so wouldn’t intrude on your eye sight as you sit down! Another one is look at is the stay keyboard stand (I have a video of this on my channel too!)

The Apex AX-48 Pro does come with a case, and a telescoping boom stand. If you adjust the front floor support it is not as easy to tip over as you demonstrated. It probably isn't as stable as the Spider pro, but it's not the same weight or price either as you mentioned. Your setup demonstration was definitely flawed. you can't count the time it takes to take a stand out of the case! You finished setting up the Apex and then took two seconds to go around and admire your work! Lol. I can set up my apex up in under 30 seconds once it's out of the bag, and the height levels are locked in, which they are not with the Spider. That means a lot more time setting your stand to the right height. In the US the Spider pro's lowest price is $350.00, the Apex AX-48 Pro is $180. I would love to have the top tier with the tilt on the Spider, but I don't think it's worth an extra $170. That's almost twice the price!
@ChrisMutchJones4 жыл бұрын
Thanks for your comment! When I bought my Alex, you had to buy the case and boom arm seperatley, so I'm glad to see that's included now! I'd agree, in terms of setting up a proper keyboard rig, the apex probably is a bit quicker and the pricing is a difficult one as depending on where and when you buy, there can be massive differences in price! Thanks for giving me your comments though and I appreciate you watching!
