thank you. Appreciate your no nonsense straight talk, good info, focus on lower price guns. I'm old, live rural, get a deer a year with a cross bow but would like to be able to hunt from my cabin porch down 100 yards into the pasture. thanks again

It is good to see the 30-30 chambered in something other than a lever gun. I had the 243 version of the Henry and aside from an obnoxiously heavy trigger pull, it was a well put together piece of machinery.

Replace the springs guys, make it what it should be. Also, Henry had a recall on them for a few issues, among them the trigger pull weight.

@@Hill_Billy_Without_A_Hill Late reply, but the trigger job on my 20-gauge (after the recall) was quite sweet. Of course, quantifying groups with a shotgun is dubious. Am soon to get the .308 single shot rifle.

this is a rifle with value written all over it,#1 is't a lot cheaper in price than a lever gun #2 you can load spire point bullet and get better BCE from hand loads and because it's a breach loader you can make a tack driver out of it, it's solid and less moving parts. this was a great choice for both bullseye shooting or hunting.

The most practical woods rifle. It’s taken elk moose white tail bear hog and more. Rapid fire follow up shots are achievable by just rechambering a round. Great for hand loads. Ammo available and most affordable. It’s all you need for most situations.

Absolutely. Everytime I'm at Walmart they got 30-30 ammo. Most folks around here from tn use old pawn shop marlins still and take deer every year with it

I figure with a scope, and a gun that groups well, should be able to be a 150 yrd gun, but I havent studied the ballistics much on foot pounds which should be around 1000 foot pounds ideally. Whatever range that is would be my max range and Id be using the 170 grain for the better sectional density.
@maxpinson5002
@maxpinson5002 3 жыл бұрын
Well a 30/30 works way better than it gets credit for. No, they don't nosedive into the ground at 100 yards. I've used a 30/30 extensively with all shot kills. You don't need any special kind of ammo. The old cheap 150 grain they've all been selling for years does just fine. The majority of the naysayers I've encountered haven't shot or hunted extensively with one, and all their data is from magazine articles and the internet. That said, I've yet to shoot a Henry single of any model

Looking to get one soon. Going to put a Skinner sight on it. If that doesn't work then I'll put a scope on it. Always liked a good basic simple rifle that doesn't have all the bells and whistles. More dependable, less moving parts to break.

You may also try opticsplanet.com. But if you do use DNZ mounts, dont use their new torque spec of 35 in/lbs if using a torque driver, and use their older spec of 22 to 25 in/lbs. I crushed a scope, and it wasn't a junk Walmart scope either. If you just do it by hand snugging probably wont be an issue, but Im picky about scopes and mounting them.

for anyone curious i figured it out, the model number from dnz is 11003 for the high mount. they also have an extra high but i dont think youd need that for the henry. its the same one they sell for the h and r handy rifle even though they dont list one for the henry single shot for some reason.

I had an H&R .223/.44 magnum combo. I loved it, but as things progress in regards to hunting laws here in Indiana, with .243 and up being legal to hunt deer on private property. I found myself reaching for the H&R less and less. And when it came to recreation my M1A and 1909 Argentine Mauser were more fleshed out for plinking fun, .223 barrel on my H&R was fun for plinking too but it just didn't have the same appeal. I ended up selling my H&R and got an AR15. I don't regret it, but holding one of these break open Henry's in a gun store yesterday made me miss my H&R and I think this Henry model will probably end up in my collection soon. With a much more flexible cartridge for hunting to boot!

I did not like the 170gr flat-nose bullet in 30/30 I would recommend that you use the 150gr round nose or hollow point bullets. The 170gr did bit preform well for me, I did get the deer but not impressed by results. You could probably get better accuracy and results by reloading since it is a single shot pointed bullets will not be an issue. I'm with you as long as it gets a deer who cares how tight the groups are

I'd love to have one, but I've already got 2 Marlins in 30 30. I had a friend that all he ever hunted with was an old HnR topper in 30 30. It was so old it had a lever instead of a push button to open it. It didn't have a sharp corner or a drop of blue left on it. I wonder what became of it when he died. Old Denieve piled up some whitetails with that thing.

They had a recall on henry single shots. Also, DNZ makes good machined products, but disregard their rings torque of 35 in/lbs, and stick with their older torque spec 22 to 25 in/lbs. The result if not, could be scope crushing. Telling you from experience, and although they are a USA company and we want to support that, their customer service/ceo is kind of a idiot sadly.
