Let's Polish Up Your Dirt Bike Plastics (CHEAP & No Sanding!) 2003 Honda CR250 Build & Seat Reveal
Guys in this T1000 dirt bike build episode, I need to polish up the plastics on our gas tank & airbox. They are reminders of where this 2003 CR250 build started - not where we're going!
This trick was so cheap & there is absolutely NO SANDING in today's video!
I am impressed with the results on the tank especially considering there was very little time & money spent.
We'll also reveal our new Traction MX seat for this build! It's rad!
I hope you enjoy today's video & please be sure to LIKE & SUB!
You can check out all of today's video mentions below!

There’s a few different names for it, but there’s products similar to “trim black”, guys use it on jeep fender flares with great success. It’ll black out the air box plastic and the bellow really well.

BRO! Congratulations! I'm not sure if it's a coincidence or if in another video perhaps you saw I bought a pair of 1989 RM 125 and RM 250 😍😍😍 (or if you found me from this plastic repair video specifically) Either way, I'll be building those as well! So pumped on them and can't wait to tinker with them some more.

Novas is the best polish! A friend of mine had some one day at the firehouse and was polishing his headlights and me being a motorcycle restoration guy had to try it on my bike plastic. Of course you know it works! Great video! The sanding method works absolutely fantastic as well but is better for vintage bikes with heavy oxidation. Sanding also takes a lot more time.

Awesome feedback! I thought that stuff was great for how cheap it was and how fast you get results. Totally agree on the sanding if someone is up for it and understand what they are getting into… plastic renovations is an absolute wizard at this!

@@mxrevival I am gonna keep watching your videos. Your builds are beautiful. I got lucky, and my 04 CR250 is really low hours and was extremely well cared for by the two previous owners. It looks stock pristine until you're right up on it, and it runs right up there with a lot of newer 450's. When it comes time to freshen up the bike, I will be referring heavily to your work! Also, I'm gonna get a hat as soon as you have them in stock again! Keep up the great and inspiring work!!!

They say using heat on plastics le that makes the plastic brittle after a few weeks .. I'd like to know your opinion or if you have experienced that
@mxrevival
@mxrevival 2 жыл бұрын
I'd say that is true. If the heat trick is needed, a lot of times the plastic has already live a good deal if it's life and a bit brittle to begin with. Not always, but more often than not 👊

A finish like this will stay shiny as long as it is cared for. Basic cleaning with simple green and dish soap does a great job of keeping it bright.

Probably should wet sand with 800 then 1200 then 2000 before polishing stages to completely smoothe the plastic before polishing. That would add about $5 and an hour or so.

@@mxrevival I do like what you did though. I sanded a KLR650 front fender up to 2000 grit yesterday and it just won't polish with a foam cone on a drill. Drill rpm is about 1200 rpm. I've put wool pads on my bench grinder so some 2950 rpm should get the job done!

@@mxrevival No biggie. Just trying to help out. I used the heat gun on some faded black yzf450 plastics. 10X better than they were but it leaves "heat rings" which still need sanded. There's alot of plastic on a 4 wheeler.

Now I’m certainly no expert, having only refinished 500-600 plastic tanks in past 9 years. I also know that you don’t care to remove the scratches- especially since you’ll use the SC1 - but if you were to refinish the plastic to a fine shine better than Oem - don’t touch it with a microfiber , only a soft t shirt or you’ll scratch it . And almost always , heat gun to shine will warp the plastic and even if you attain a shine it usually goes dull in months . Like I said I’ve only been refinishing plastic for 9 years so I’m certainly no authority but this has been my experience and my clients are happy with the results,

@@josephbishop3231 I’m only saying what my own experience has been and have found many people have the same experience. The manufacturers never planned for these plastic parts to be used some up to now 45 years later. We’re doing the best we can with what we have. We’re working to get some tanks reproduced due to scarcity but it takes time. I’m one of about a handful of people in the Us and about a dozen in the world who refinish plastic and not using heat is a consensus among us. I’m sorry to read as sarcastic, again I’m no expert on it I’ve just had maybe more than average experience. I’m open to hearing different methods as long as they don’t damage / destroy parts .
