Looking good! I think whitewash is the way to go on these walls rather than paint. The paint spalled off because it does not 'breathe'. So moisture got trapped between the conventional paint and the plaster. Trapped moisture caused the spalling. I like your plans for the room. You may want to put a few finishing nails through the face of the ceiling panels to flatten the sagging areas. Finish nails won't be visible after a coat of paint. It will be fun to see the wood beneath the brown paint. Best of luck! :)

What a gem of a cottage ! I suppose due to heat you are keeping shutters closed. Love those doors, wooden floor will look beautiful once varnished. Will you use the small room as a dressing room? I too had those Victorian strip ceilings. Underneath were beams and boards. So think about that as you have beastly woodworm in the ceiling and fascia boards and may rather remove them. Thanks for the walkabout!

It seems that you are determined to restore the house without changing it much. There are some things that I would completely renovate. The electrical installation is one of them. Those cables are very old and that is dangerous. Especially if you have to leave the house closed for a while due to work... Good luck and enjoy the Portuguese summer.
@My15KHouse4 ай бұрын
Dont worry, I'm definitely going to completely update the electric, but I will wait for an electrician to do it when I know where everything will go
@davidjeffersjeffers79184 ай бұрын
I think what you were peeling off the wall (you referred to it as paint) was the top coat of the plaster. The bigger issue is the incursion of moisture that caused all that damage. Have you looked into that and corrected the problem? What's on the other side of that wall?
@ram1brn4 ай бұрын
no its paint my house did the same thing. Where he applied what was left of the whitewash looks like it was a concrete patch job and someone used regular paint after their repair you can not paint adobe, plaster, gypsum block ,etc it will crack and come off in huge chunks like that
@My15KHouse4 ай бұрын
Its paint, theres no top coat just several layers of whitewash, which seems to be the style among the old houses here. Theres nothing that I can tell that would cause moisture issues but maybe there used to be something that isnt there anymore. The other side is a covered area next to the neighbors driveway

@My15KHouse4 ай бұрын
If I can find reclaimed doors and shutters I will do that but I havent found any the right size, so I will repair as much as I can, but a lot of the window area is a lost cause so it will have to be new.

Another great video ! are you going to put skirting boards in ?
@My15KHouse4 ай бұрын
I'm going to guess thats British for baseboards, in which case there is a small little strip already there that looks pretty good so I will keep it as it is, for now at least. The living room has full sized base boards so I could end up adding them for continuity
@minenawabi87584 ай бұрын
This room has a damp problem on that part of the wall, which cannot be solved by painting. You must first remove the dampness and then paint, otherwise the paint will separate from the wall after a short while. And it is not good for health either.
@My15KHouse4 ай бұрын
Its a previous problem that isnt an issue anymore

Is the wall suffering from rising damp?
@bethloomis89614 ай бұрын
I wondered if that was the issue
@My15KHouse4 ай бұрын
I'm not sure what the issue is, theres nothing current that should cause that so it might have been something from previously that isnt there anymore
@bethloomis89614 ай бұрын
@My15KHouse Read lots of English mysteries and rising damp is mentioned. With your posters talking about it, I guess it's a real thing. It sounds so cool, but for it ruining a building!
@tessasinclair63153 ай бұрын
@@My15KHouseI might be mistaken, but didn't you at one stage have some leakage/seepage from the same area (between your and the neighbour's wall)...? I somehow recall that one of the other rooms was affected by it - through the roof/ceiling. But, I could very well be confusing it with something else, I'd been watching! 😶 🙃 A nice recap video of where you first started, would be welcomed, too. Also, a look at the garden, even if it's a disaster zone; a look at how the streetside paint job, held up, would be a nice video filler, too. That country walk looked so peaceful and relaxing. Beautiful area you find yourself in.
@My15KHouse3 ай бұрын
Thats correct, the other bedroom had that problem mainly from the gutter overflowing from being full of stuff, it was a different wall though. I was going to do a garden update video setting up the compost bin the county was giving out but they ran out when they came here and so I have to go to the city hall 30 min away and havent gotten around to it yet, recap is in the works too but for some reason those take longer trying to find all the clips I want. I did actually film a bit for the outside paint after a year but forgot to include it so I'll work it in when I do the next painting video
@annhopper69593 ай бұрын
Should find out if there is a reason for the paint peeling off like that. Maybe moisture? If it is you will have same problem again if you don’t fix that.
@My15KHouse3 ай бұрын
Pretty sure I figured it out and I cover it in the next video...but yes it would have been from moisture, which should now be resolved

The roof is in good condition, the moisture would have come from the ground but I think it is an old issue that isnt a problem anymore

I always try to give the prices, but it wasnt relevant in this situation, otherwise i'd constantly be giving prices for everything in every video. I would have to look it up but I think it was around 20 euros/bag.
