My 20-Year Coma (Medical Miracle Documentary) | Real Stories

In 1984, 18 year old Sarah Scantlin was run over by a drunk driver. The severe brain injuries left her in a coma for twenty years. Doctors had to remove the part of her brain that governs speech to save her life. The prognosis was that she would be in a vegetative state for the rest of her life, with feeding tubes to keep her alive. In 2005, Sarah miraculously woke up in the nursing home where she lay for two decades and began to speak. She asked the nurse for a manicure.
No-one has ever been in a coma for that long and regained the power of speech. The film meets Sarah two years after she spoke those first words. Now, she wants to prove once more she can achieve the impossible. Sarah’s goal is independence. To feed herself, and be able to stand and walk unassisted. The film follows her rapid progress and her family’s struggle to finance further intensive rehab for her after already losing everything they had on medical bills.
Sarah’s loved ones also come to terms with the guilt, sacrifice, and loss that they suffered over those years that Sarah ‘disappeared’. The film explores how Sarah’s brain rewired itself and how there is much more going on in the brains of coma victims than anyone ever thought possible.

I was in a car accident in 2007 when I was 16. I too suffered frontal lobe damage. It was considered a Severe TBI, was in a coma for over a week. I also had to re teach myself how to walk, talk, dress and so forth. Sort of the same scale as Shawna. It was a long recovery process and it sucks horribly to be stuck in your head. You're in there, and you FEEL completely normal BUT you're not.

They had me in a cage basically in my room, I thought I could walk but I couldn't. I felt completely normal, and would get frustrated in my therapy when I was asked to do something I knew how to do or knew the answer to but just could not connect the parts in my brain to make my body do or say it.

My heart broke for Sarah, she had no idea she was 41 she thought she was 19. When her dad asked her what she wanted to do next what was her goal and she said walk it was beautiful. Samantha McMahon Absolutely not true. There are phases of coma from 1 to i believe, 10. And lower phases of coma, the patient is mobile, can hear, can respond somewhat, and can do basic tasks. YOu might find it interesting. Check out coma phases.

@@MrBibi86 I agree but it wasnt like she was on life support at the time of her death. She died peacefully without being hooked up to machines. Take the case of Karen Ann Quinlan. She hung on for a full 10 years after life support was removed. The difference in my opinion was that Sarah could communicate somewhat but Karen couldn't. She was still in a coma/vegatative state when she died. Sarah was awake and could actually talk and interact with people. She had physical therapy also. I feel with time she could have made some progress. I'm physically disabled myself and I don't give up on myself or others that easily. That's just my opinion and outlook on things. I feel there's always hope

Having done patient care, we get to leave, walk, laugh, talk, share dinner with friends. When we leave the room we think of other things, do other things, these poor folks never leave their prisons. when she was in a coma for that long, why didn't they do physical therapy? You don't have to pay for that, could of moved a leg a few minutes per day, an arm...so the joints don't lock up, especially for that long. I've seen this happen (rip Sara)

I was unconcious for 2 weeks, after landing on my head in a skating accident but i think I could be roused because I remember all I would say was "let me sleep", when I woke up properly I felt drousy but fine, I asked how long I'd been asleep. So, glad that both them regained their consciousness. But, after such life changes, it is so difficult to come back into the realm of being normal. I have had a similar life set-back, and it has been very difficult to fight my way back. Mine is more physical and not so much mental. Thus, all of us need to remember to give people like this space (when things unexpected happen), and the encouragement is sure helpful to giving us the chance to come back & be normal.
