In 1984, 18 year old Sarah Scantlin was run over by a drunk driver. The severe brain injuries left her in a coma for twenty years. Doctors had to remove the part of her brain that governs speech to save her life. The prognosis was that she would be in a vegetative state for the rest of her life, with feeding tubes to keep her alive. In 2005, Sarah miraculously woke up in the nursing home where she lay for two decades and began to speak. She asked the nurse for a manicure.
No-one has ever been in a coma for that long and regained the power of speech. The film meets Sarah two years after she spoke those first words. Now, she wants to prove once more she can achieve the impossible. Sarah’s goal is independence. To feed herself, and be able to stand and walk unassisted. The film follows her rapid progress and her family’s struggle to finance further intensive rehab for her after already losing everything they had on medical bills.
Sarah’s loved ones also come to terms with the guilt, sacrifice, and loss that they suffered over those years that Sarah ‘disappeared’. The film explores how Sarah’s brain rewired itself and how there is much more going on in the brains of coma victims than anyone ever thought possible.

I was in a car accident in 2007 when I was 16. I too suffered frontal lobe damage. It was considered a Severe TBI, was in a coma for over a week. I also had to re teach myself how to walk, talk, dress and so forth. Sort of the same scale as Shawna. It was a long recovery process and it sucks horribly to be stuck in your head. You're in there, and you FEEL completely normal BUT you're not.

@@MrBibi86 I agree but it wasnt like she was on life support at the time of her death. She died peacefully without being hooked up to machines. Take the case of Karen Ann Quinlan. She hung on for a full 10 years after life support was removed. The difference in my opinion was that Sarah could communicate somewhat but Karen couldn't. She was still in a coma/vegatative state when she died. Sarah was awake and could actually talk and interact with people. She had physical therapy also. I feel with time she could have made some progress. I'm physically disabled myself and I don't give up on myself or others that easily. That's just my opinion and outlook on things. I feel there's always hope

I fucking hate how hospitals come after you to cut life support on loved ones. My father was in a coma for 3 days and everyday they came and pestered her to pretty much just kill him. He died anyways, but why the fuck would you pressure someone to kill their loved ones???

It was cruel to keep her alive in that state for twenty years , it must of been torture like a nightmare she can never wake up from. Then to fully wake up 2 that lifestyle. I'm sorry i wouldn't want that. But God bless her and I wish her and her family happiness they deserve it

I'm glad I wasn't the only one thinking the same thing. I've told my family multiple times, if I cannot be myself until the very end, pull the plug. At least I can go onto the next life you know? But bless this poor woman's heart for enduring all of this.

I was in a coma for 2 weeks, my family had been at the hospital for a week. when I was told they'd been there I didn't believe it because I didn't remember it. when I saw the pictures I stared at them in disbelief. it was the strangest thing to see undeniable evidence yet it makes no sense.

J Miller Your experience is like being hit by a car that you did not see coming, so your brain lacks that necessary info! It is a shock and your brain cannot make any sense out of it! If you did see the car coming, your brain would have processed it to an extent, even if you were not able to react in time!

The true miracle here is the constant love of Sarah's father and her best friend Laurie for her. I don't see the medical miracle ... she is still sadly and severely handicapped. But the courage and optimism and unwavering love of those two people is truly humbling. Beautiful.

So, glad that both them regained their consciousness. But, after such life changes, it is so difficult to come back into the realm of being normal. I have had a similar life set-back, and it has been very difficult to fight my way back. Mine is more physical and not so much mental. Thus, all of us need to remember to give people like this space (when things unexpected happen), and the encouragement is sure helpful to giving us the chance to come back & be normal.
