Having owned a Leaf and having been a member of a Leaf owner's facebook group, the problem is nearly always the 12V battery.
@tellusw970111 ай бұрын
Yes, a bad 12 volt battery can empty the high volt in a coupe of days. When voltage gets below 10,5volt even when parked, the main battery kicks in and charges. Then it cosumes ~300watts (all computers alive) until 12volt is full, then repeat if 12v is bad. Or it could be that the charging cable was connected but no juice in other end(wall), as some other here explained. I dont think he forgotten to turn car off.

I know the Gen 1 LEAFs had a charging bug where if you leave the cable plugged in after the car is full, it does not top up the 12v battery. So you need to unplug it once full. I had a hire car in the UK that died for that reason. It sat at the local council, plugged in, for 3 weeks
@harvey6661611 ай бұрын
Actually, it's worse than that. The design issue would actively discharge the 12V battery if the car was left plugged in. The 12V battery only gets charged when the drive battery is engaged, i.e. you actually drive the car some nominal number of miles. So if you have a charging timer set, the car will wake up periodically to charge the car, find that the drive battery is fine (since it's just been left plugged in, not driven), and then go back to sleep. The wake/sleep cycles eventually run the 12V battery down. The owner's manual actually does warn that if you don't intend to drive the car for an extended period of time, it should be parked unplugged.

@stuffilike449811 ай бұрын
The common denominator seems to be Marcus! It would be interesting to measure the input to the 12v from the solar charger on the Leaf. A fossil alternator would put 14.6 ish volts back into the battery when the engine is running but remember that battery has to run all the electrics (lights/HVAC/etc) How much does the Leaf send to the 12v battery in operation? Probably not that much as the demand (central locking/key id/dash ??) will be fairly low as the main battery will power most other circuits once the car is 'started' The main message from recent posts is that you should Always Be Changing the 12 v battery to avoid the 'agony' 😂

i find that the solar panel on the leaf is quite useless, its supposed to keep the 12v battery charged when the car is parked for a long time but the 12v battery still goes dead, i had it happen to me, its better to just plug the car in because the charger not only charges the traction battery it also activates the DC to DC converter in the leaf to charge the 12v lead acid battery too.

Not sure if either of these are what you ran into, but with my 2013 LEAF (RIP) I ran into two different issues with the 12V battery. The first was that I went on vacation and left the car plugged in. The 12V battery only charges if you drive the car, but the car wakes up periodically to check for charging if it's plugged in, and the cycles of waking up and going back to sleep drained the 12V battery. I was gone for several weeks and by the time I got back home, the 12V battery was completely dead. :( The second was a flaw in the 3G cellular radio. The car came equipped with a 2G radio, but 2G was decommissioned in the US and I wound up buying the 3G upgrade so that Carwings would still work. That turned out to be a bad decision, because the 3G radio system had a bizarre problem where if you charged the car to 100%, then the 3G radio would activate excessively and discharge the 12V battery overnight. On that second one, the most infuriating part was that the local dealer's service shop refused to acknowledge the problem, even though there were other owners on the web describing the problem and even citing a Nissan-provided service bulletin. In order to demonstrate the problem, I first had to reliably reproduce it; I eventually figured out it was connected to charging to 100%, so there was a period when I was charging to 100% regularly to demonstrate the problem to the dealer. Even that wasn't good enough for them, so I had them disable the 3G radio. At that point, the problem went away completely. Only after all that did they finally agree to talk to Nissan, get the info about how to fix it, and fix the problem. But by then, the drive battery had degraded significantly...we went from a battery that had almost 90% of its original capacity, to one that had less than 70%, in a matter of a month or two. :( Of course, there are lots of other ways things could go wrong, and maybe your problem was something completely different. But I wouldn't be surprised if it was one of those two things. The second problem seems the most likely to me, given your observed behavior, especially if your car has the 3G radio upgrade.
