THAT USED TO BE MY CAR!!! My grandpa put that bolt in the transmission pan to flush the fluid BECAUSE THE CAR LOST OVER DRIVE sadly changing the fluid DID NOT FIX THE ISSUE please be honest when you sell someone a car that has that sort of problem. CHEVY DEALER SAID A NEW TRANS OR A REBUILD WOULD FIX THE PROBLEM
@AutoAuctionRebuilds
@AutoAuctionRebuilds 11 ай бұрын
Unfortunately the dealership didn’t know what they were talking about if what you’re saying is true. The cavalier never came with an overdrive transmission it only has three speeds. There has never been an overdrive on these which is why the RPMs are high at high speeds. I’ve had several Cavaliers and several sunbirds in fact I have a sunbird sitting right next to this one it also does not have overdrive. Sounds like you need to find a new dealership.

The oil used for rust prevention is actually a wax-oil that has a very high wax content to cling to the metal and repel water and snow. The black coloring, though, comes from the fact that the wax compound never really dries and, as a result, dust and road grime will stick to it. This does no harm but to turn the wax-oil from a golden color to brown or black giving the surface the appearance of a having a major oil leak.

These coatings are amazing. And you can use a brush to 'restore' them on places where it has worn off or damaged. And it will preserve this car very very well. But it has to be a closed layer or else at the edges rust will build up underneath.

The RP from that era was made mostly by Witco (now out of business) at their Trainor, PA plant. It consisted of Calcium sulfonate diluted with oil and a wax with black pigment that sets up on the metal. A good part of their production was sold to Rusty Jones.

Living in the midwest I learned my lesson a long time ago. When purchasing a used car or truck always inspect underneath! The 2 cars I own are both rust free and older. Both have the undercoating. That coating isn't pleasant to look at but it saves these cars from the salt and harsh winters. Makes any repairs easy to replace parts. Cars like these didn't survive that well. This one is a fine example of a well cared for car. These cavaliers were also a part of my childhood and they were everywhere back in the day. These and the later models were great little cars and had a good run so its nice to see a decent example of one here.

Yes Randy ,that steel line under the passenger door is a powersteering cooling line. There were 2 lengths. The standard line was about the length of what you have now. The Z24 line was a much longer loop (for more cooling) that went back the full length of the door and was secured with those clip mounts you found.

I totaled out that hose after some teenager stupidity taking my Corsica off-road in Michigan's U.P. Never got it stuck, but I totaled out the oil pan and that power steering line. I effectively flushed the power steering fluid multiple times over before fixing it. I also freaked out some loggers who never expected a small front drive car in the middle of a muddy, rutted logging trail in the U.P. Did I mention teenager stupidity?

I like the Z24. It's fun to follow the story. Fuel filters for these cars had a return line that went back into the fuel filter. When the fuel filter was replaced, the wrong filter was used as there is no input. The loop was done as a work around. This also explains why it won't restart when hot. Get the correct fuel filter with the 3rd line and restore it back to GM specs. I may be wrong, but your power steering lines and cooler are at the front of the car. I think the loop is fuel. Great car. I would spray oil onto the rusty bolts that hold the control arms. The 2.8L and 3.1L do not have a rollerized cam, you need to add zddp to the oil to protect the lifters and cam. Happy motoring. Plate C

The hose behind the right wheel replaced the o.e.m. hard line. It rusted and started to leak. This line, believe it or not, serves as an oil cooler. GM just ran a hard line back, away from the power steering pump, made a u-turn and then back to the pump. (Remember the price point of this car) Btw...I added the transmission drain plug. Ha..

love that car, it is in great shape I own a shop in Akron Ohio, Jims power steering that power steering line is actually the fluid cooler, it used to go all the way back to the the end of the rocker and just loop back the airflow under the car would cool the fluid, it probably rusted and leaked, a better way to fix that is to install a cooler somewhere where it will get airflow, napa has a nice kit pn 1-4866, it has everything you need, back in the 80s only top models like cadillac had coolers, it was cheaper to just run steel tubing along the frame, but it is less time and trouble to install a cooler at this point, the rubber hose is ok for a temporary fix but power steering fluid gets hotter that most people think, it needs a cooler installed

Well Randy you should know the truth. The rustproofing is called "Ziebart" and was massive in the 1970's and 1980's and it was a dealer add on that worked very well. The oem's basically stopped the practice by telling consumers doing this rust prevention would "Void" the factory warranty so this industry was eliminated almost overnight. it is true vehicles don't rust as bad as decades ago but vehicles in the northeast absolutely get very Crusty underneath after only 5 tough winters.

nice cleanup under the hood, a car like that should not have a lot of rustproofing and oil under there, one thing I have found that works great is after you get it clean like you did is to give it a coat of no touch tire cleaner it makes everything shine, great for the belts and hoses and also prevents rust

That loop in the power steering line is original like that. Usually it would be a looped hardline, but i guess it rusted out and they replaced it with a flexible hose. Its supposed to give the power steering a cooling effect. GM did that on a lot of the older 80's and 90's cars :)

I had an '89 in black. I don't know if this is mentioned in the comments anywhere but the "runs fine until you turn it off and it doesn't start" affected my car as well. In the end I found it was the injectors, they didn't seem to like ethanol fuels. At least that was the understanding back in the late 90s and early 2000s. I replaced a number of injectors which always resolved the problem which was either it wouldn't start or it would run extremely rough. The other common issue I had was the alternator failing almost year. I attribute this to interstate driving and the 3spd auto. It sat at quite high revs for long periods of time. Nice looking car!

Screw the haters Randy! If that car is one of your dream cars, good on you. Who cares! They don't have to drive it. That car is clean A.F.! Especially for a Northeast car. I can't get over how rust free it is! I think you did good!

I would not bother removing the preservative on the underside of the car. It works and has protected the car. And the bottom of the car is called the dirty side for a reason. The oily wax coating is what helped keep that car so nice. Leave it to continue doing its job. The top side and inside of the car is still mint. That’s is what really matters.

Nice find, I always wanted one of those back in the day but couldn't afford it. The 2.8`s had the nicest induction and exhaust tones of all V-6`s.

Using oil as rust prevention is done a lot here in North Carolina (I prefer WD-40). Some counties even spray used oil on dirt roads to keep the road dust down. 👍🇺🇲😎

Nothing wrong with a Chevy Cavalier z24 Randy! I'm from Down Under & my dream car is a serious 2 1999 vt commodore as my dad brought a tiger mica orange vt commodore & I absolutely loved that car! So many memories!

It sure does look good for a northern car. We used a wire wheel on a grinder to clean up the bottom of the Celica GT-S a few months ago and coated everything with rust converter to hopefully keep it from rusting even more. I still have to cut out the rocker panel rust, treat it and put on some patch panels. That's a project for the next few months!

I don’t recommend removing the undercoating. I did it once and not only is it messy. The exposed metal and fasteners will rust faster.

I live in NJ and yes even newer cars are driving around with rust. Proof is in the video that undercoating the vehicles is an awesome rust prevention. I wish my truck had been undercoated but too late now 😂

I bought some special material to spray on my truck to prevent rust . It was more like a wax/ oil type product . But it can be washed off by rain and snow after a period of time according to the statement on the can .

From Buffalo, NY. Here is how to remove a beautiful build-up of old grimy oil rustproofing. Use a solution of water, any soapy cleaner (even laundry detergent works), and add some kerosene or diesel fuel to the mixture and it will form an emulsion. The old oil coating will melt off easily. Then do a final cleaning in the traditional manner. Or, just spray diesel or kero on and then spray it with your pressure washer in the traditional manner. When done cleaning, spray new oil on everything so it doesn't begin to corrode. Cut the motor oil with kero so it sprays and seeps.

we still do this in canada, oil guard, they do also drill into the doors and rockers and spray inside the panels then ad plugs, recommended every 2 years and really does make a massive difference, we sadly use salt on the roads in the winters

On 16:49 you can clearly see a hose going into an air bag (suspension) that was installed inside the rear spring. Ate those the hoses you are talking about? Nice video. My wife had a 1988 Z24 white when we got married. It is a very dependable car. We still can't understand why we sold it. 😂 Hard to find these days. Thanks for the memories.

I used to used to undercoat cars back in the early '90s and it was a pain. I used to own both an '87 and '93 Cavaliers. What I loved about those is that if you set the e-brake, put it in reverse, the rear end would raise up. And then you put it in drive, the rear end would drop. We used to call it " the poor man's hydraulics".

Nice car! I never understood people who are afraid to spray off their engine compartment. I've always cleaned my engines 1 or 2 times a year, and the only time I ever had a problem was, believe it or not, on a boat with a 351 Ford motor, LOL. Water got under the distributor cap and the boat stalled in the middle of the lake about 5 miles from the ramp. My current daily driver is a 2010 Mazda 6 with 6 speed manual. I've sprayed that motor off every spring and fall for the last 7 years that I've owned it. Looks nearly brand new under the hood.
