I agree with Steve. House looked well maintained. She has family. The new unit will out last her but will add to the value of the house when appraised. Let's face it, A/C costs 3 or 4 hundred dollars a year when you look at new cost divided by the life span of the unit.

My neighbors were a little shocked when I told them that a new Goodman 16 SEER 5 ton condensing unit, coil, supply plenum, and variable speed furnace would probably run at least $10,000 installed. I was able to install the 5 ton equipment myself for less than $4000 with tax. That price includes the condensing unit, cased coil, furnace, new supply plenum, starting collars, new disconnect and whip, can of R-410a and all of the extras needed for installation. I did not replace the refrigerant lines which were in very good condition but I did flush the lines to get rid of the oil and scale from the original brazing installation. BTW, I used Stay-Brite 8 to sweat in the new equipment. I was really impressed with Stay-Brite 8. It flowed great but you have to use tight fittings.

Why are there 2 compressors? Are there 1 for each floor? If thats the case would you suggest that she upsize the replacement so it can cover the other unit when it fails as well? I mean wouldn't it be more cost effective to replace the failed compressor with an upsized one that can also replace the other when when it fails in the not too distant future? i'd want to be the H-E-R-O by saving these old folks a shitton of $$ if possible... Just curious...

Problem is dry charge R22 compatible condensing units have gone the way of the dodo as of 2016. Now if the coil unit was made to withstand R410a pressures, yeah my company gives the option to upgrade the condensing unit and change out the metering device at the coil.

still, for $8000 i'd look into other options, maybe geothermal.

David I understand business and the costs associated. For one we don't know what system he had in mind when throwing the ball park quote out there. We don't know if he was offering a Cadillac or a 1960 VW., we don't know if he was including support for a number of years either. Allot missing to make an absolute judgement. In my case with HD they did offer 10 years unlimited support for the 95%. That is worth something to the average Joe. We won't see it but it would be interesting to see a quote on a system from this channel.
@johncundiss90987 жыл бұрын
Another disagreement. Sure the condenser fan is not running, he ran the compressor for 5 seconds. Does he even know if the compressor has freon? Should have left it running a minute, condenser will get warm, evap will get cool for a bit. If it did and bottom of condenser not rotted then its an estimate for a new fan and motor, then one for a new system if interested. Next, its ac season and he don't have condenser fan motors on his truck? The fan I understand. Things to do, give customer the estimates and go, after proper reassembly of what ya did. Previous person taking the disconnect is unacceptable. They ether bring it back or I would report it stolen.
