Nice seeing someone take the time to repair an older system and keep it running. There is an old timer in town that sells firewood out of a 1948 Ford F-1 pickup truck. He likes Dunkin Donuts coffee and I enjoyed talking to him and at least once a day someone will ask if he wants to sell the truck and he always replies sorry not for sale. Last week the possible buyer was persistent and said yeah but you could have a new Ford pickup with all the bells and whistles. His reply? I went down to the Ford dealer to look at the new trucks a few years ago and I had to jump up to get into the cab, it's all electronics then when he told me the price $48,000! I pointed the salesman at my 1948 pickup and said Son I paid through the nose to buy that truck and it cost me $2137 bucks and you honestly think I'm going to spend $48 K for a truck I own outright and does the job? No way in hell climbed out of the truck and stepped into his and left the dealer. My pickup I just step into it I don't have to jump up to get into it neither do I have to add steps to get in or out of it. I can fix everything on this truck myself, please tell me why I should sell it to you? The young man just looked at the old man and told him after you explained it like that if it were my firewood business I'd run that truck another 50 years. The old man sold the business to that young man last spring and introduced him to all his customers which included his house and wood lot over 900 acres in wood, he sold an average of 400-600 cord of wood every winter all from his own wood lot and only cut up dead down trees or standing dead trees. The old man passed in his sleep last September. The young man and his wife and three little ones no older than 5 took care of the old man when after he bought everything from him asked where are you going to go now? I've got no place to go, I outlived all my kids and family so his wife told him you just stay right here with us. He tried to refuse them but didn't want to go to an old folks home. He was 97 when he passed. The young man He brought the old Ford pickup into a motorcycle paint shop and had "In memory of old Jack" painted under the rear window. The young man quit his job working for a tree trimming company. Every morning his wife hands him a list of the day's deliveries.of firewood and he has been working steadily to clean the deadwood on the ground and still makes his deliveries. It was one month after the old man passed that the young man crawled under thr old truck to grease it and his wife came out to find him laughing his butt off still under the truck. He crawled out from under the truck and told his wife I have to hustle to deliver 12 cords of wood a day and have been wracking my brain trying to figure out how that old man moved faster than me. Watch honey, he opened the drivers door and pushed a button that was nicely hidden and a motor started up and up went the cargo bed on a hydraulic cylinder. He says he delivers a lot more wood now. :-)

I'm watching old videos since finding you a couple weeks ago. Your current videos (2021) have you very much a pro-fix-it guy... why buy new if you can fix it? where the couple of videos I've watched that are from 2015 and 2016 you have a 'why fix old when you can buy new' attitude. When did that change happen? Enjoying your videos. Lisa

Well if it works for $700 he is WAY ahead of the game, especially if it doesn't get used for another 2 years. A 5-7 thousand investment sitting in your back yard and attic doing nothing except deteriorating for two years is far more expensive than $700.

If you want to give a real expectancy of lifespan of a unit, Meg-ohm the compressors and check the acid level in the refrigerate...it was a norm for us at every maintenance contract, you can build a history for the customer and let them know the system is degrading or still usable.

Old systems tend to die hard. I really wonder where all the moisture came from to rust the heck out of that blower motor and squirrel cage. The ocean air? Regardless, the only parts needed on the old tank was the motor and a little how ya doing. For the risk factor of investing in the old unit to work again, seems to be reasonable when new units are very expensive and less reliable .

replacement motor was mounted with resilient rings still mounted. Not being a resilient mounted motor, these should have been removed. If the motor is on top and the outer ring falls off from vibration (common) it will shake the air handler apart. If the inner one falls off the same result...

I fix old things myself. It's not worth money otherwise. However on stuff like this. Where one things might lead to another. I normally leave it, or replace. Car has a busted AC line. Hasn't ran in 4 years. I'm not fixing cause car is 20 years old, and in order to replace line, You have to lift the engine forward (sideways engine) so it can't be done myself. Then there's no guarantee compressor still works. All I know is it hasn't seized cause engine would snap the belt otherwise.

whats happening is this. The a/c is working. but you set it to 73 so it cools and should turn off at 73. but the the temperature in the house goes up to 75 and the unit keeps running and the house never gets to temp even know thermostat is set to 73 so unit keeps running. i think cooling is uneven in house and when house gets cold, i turn ac off and house temp comes down. I have vaulted ceiling and never had this happen. what do you think? (know)?
