As a lifelong wings fan I'm very biased, but the grind line, Draper, Maltby, Kocer and McCarty were essential in the teams success. The 'Russian 5' were amazing to watch. On a team named the RED Wings, it seemed a perfect fit. I'll never get past what happened to Konstantinov, such a talent lost so early. In 97 the Grind line was on the ice while 'Legion of Doom' was playing. When your 4th line takes out the #1 line of the opponent, your in fat city. After the salary cap the really good draft picks kept the team relevant, but the loss of Vlady and then Fisher were losses hard to make up for. To think the team won the cup in '08 with Lindtrom, Z, Datsuk and other late round picks was amazing. It couldn't last, bad trades for one more run has left the team at the bottom. Amazing how Kronwall, an ailing defenseman seems now to be the only reason the team wasn't at the bottom of the league in 18-19. Better times may be ahead but today I'd just be happy to see them get beaten one more time

Holmstrom should be put in the hall of fame simply because you can't tell the history of hockey without explaining how Holmstrom developed and perfected that stand in front of net position that every team has now and all the best teams have one of the best stand in front and screen players. There's no real stats for what that position does but everyone knows it when they see it and it's a huge factor in winning games and cups. There needs to be a stat that recognizes that player position, it has way to much impact on the game not to be acknowledged.

I think most Wings fans who watched Datsyuk and Zetterberg's careers love them equally, but for the sake of discussion, I consider Zetterberg my favorite player. McCarty and Maltby played their roles very well. As far as Vladdie, the guy was my favorite back then. When the news came out that some players were involved in a serious accident, the first thing I thought was, “please don’t be Konstantinov.” 🙁 And that was with all the other stars on that 1997 team. You saw some great skill from him from time to time, like when he’d roof the puck from the backhand on a breakaway. It’s like he could’ve been a very good forward but he was like, “ nah, I’ll just stay back here on the blue line so I can light someone up!” Look up Dale Hawerchuk’s final shift in the NHL...

The 1998 cup was in his honor. I also like Shanahan for the same reasons you would. I think it was 1998, maybe 2002, when he was not scoring as well and playing a mostly defensive game in the playoffs due to back pain and he told a reporter “I’m not playing for the Conn Smyth, I’m playing for the Stanley Cup”. It's not so far fetched to say he's a top 10 NHL player of all time imo. I fricken love Datsyuk lol "He is the sickest player I've ever seen in my life" - Brett Hull "He could do things nobody else could do and would try things we wouldn't even think of" - Steve Yzerman " He could've gotten an extra 50 points a year if he really wanted to, but he wanted to be the best player all around" - Luc Robitaille I mean, just name me one other NHL player who deliberately made 2 opponents crash into each other by dekeing both of them out. lol

I wonder if Osgood would've had more consideration for the Hall if the Wings had repeated in 2009. He was fantastic that playoff run.

Pittsburgh fans and NHL pundits would of course try to make it sound like Crosby was the greatest thing on earth the moment he hit the NHL. Meanwhile, the actual NHL players would vote Datsyuk as the toughest player to play against year after year. I'd say McCarty is on every fan's list; his journey was the ultimate redemption story of getting to the top of the mountain only to nearly lose everything to substance abuse and managed to put his life back together. And for being a grinder and a role player he had a knack for creating iconic moments; Bloody Wednesday which had to happen for the Wings to both mentally become a tougher team in order to win a cup and get past the Avalanche, he both dealt with Lemieux and scored the game winning goal in OT. Scored a game clinching goal against the Avs and one of the iconic goals of the 90s to clinch the first Cup in '97, in one of the all time playoff series against the Avs in '02 scored a natural hat trick in game 1 and the clinching goal in game 6 to get the series back to Detroit for game 7.

Off the top of my head...Stevie Y (really wished those Yzerman to Montreal rumors had come to fruition back in the day), Lidstrom, Datsyuk, Osgood, Draper, Maltby...back to work I go...oh, Gallant. I met him in person as a kid back when he was an active player. He was friendly.

I am a huge Detroit fan. Currently 37 years old and I was born and bread on the redwings. This list was fairly good 👍, We all have opinions about our favorites. But here is my question... I have never seen that hat and I wonder if you recall when where you got it. Sincerely #LGRW. Larkin for Captain! Also hope we can talk about that hat.

As a kid, I never understood the Osgood hate. Osgood was a really good goaltender and all the "Worst goalie to win the cup" bs was so unwarranted.

One I think you would love but will never make this list: Joe Hicketts. Hard worker. Really small but plays a hard game (like 5'8" 174 but doesn't back down from a hit or clearing the crease). Seems like a really good guy on top of that. Big smile on the bench most of the time.

Why is Fetisov not ranked? He is a HOF and IHOF member and one of the best defenders of all time. He was the leader of the Green Unit and won so many international titles... I would love to see a comparison between the KLM line and the Russian Five.

My favorites as a kid: Harold Snepts and Shawn Burr A favorite I never saw play: Mickey Redmond - I cant think of the wings without thinking of him just because of his announcing Favorite stars: Yzerman, Shanahan, and Datsyuk Favorite goalie: Jimmy Howard or Chris Osgood - both under appreciated and if Howard was on the team for the cup teams, I still think they still win them Favorite tough guys: McCarty, Probert, and Kocur Favorite current player: Bertuzzi

Chris R I’m glad to see you have Howard in there. He gets a lot of undeserved criticism. He’s definitely lost a step now, but I think he’s been one of the best goalies at making the routine stops, at least up until his yearly injury, which he seems to be a different player when he returns. The red wings have been a much different team since he came around, had he been there during the cup years I think he’d have a better reputation.

I know that you never saw him play, but someday you should do a video about Gordie Howe. The man may have played in the paleolithic era, but much of what he accomplished is utterly insane. He finished top 10 in league scoring when he was over 40. I don't know if anyone else has ever done that, or will ever do that again. And in the 1953 scoring race he finished 24 points ahead of the nearest forward... who was his own linemate.

Yep and he could fight too. Anyone remember tough guy Lou Fontinato`s nose after Howe decked him. Lou said he was going to get Howe and he never bothered him after that ; read it in the Winnipeg Tribune back in the fifties no TV then but saw the picture of Lou`s nose in the paper. Ted Lindsey was a tough guy also ; him and Richard got at it one night and Ted decked him with one shot and Maurice was a few chicklets short.

I remember Tim Cheveldae. He played a TON of games in the early 1990s, and put up some good stats in the regular season (for that time period). Unfortunately, that didn't translate into playoff success. He was pretty much run out of town after the 1993 playoff loss to the Leafs. Chevy was a little like Manny Legace in the early 2000s: good in the regular season, subpar in the postseason. I agree with you on Chris Osgood. Criminally unappreciated net minder. I think he gets into the HOF eventually, but may have to wait awhile.

My favorite wings I’ve watched (08-present) I tried to avoid players that only played one season in Detroit or rookies. Honorable mention: Tomas Holmstrom Brad Stuart Dan Cleary (would have been on the list but played three years too long and caused young players to be blocked) Filip Hronek: will be on the list next season. Darren Helm (08-11) injuries and contract have hurt his place Chris Osgood 1. Pavel Datsyuk 2. Nick Lidstrom 3. Henrik Zetterberg 4. Anthony Mantha 5. Dylan Larkin 6. Johan Franzen 7. Nick Kronwall 8. Todd Bertuzzi 9. Tyler Bertuzzi 10. Tomas Tatar 11. Gus Nyquist 12. Petr Mrazek 13. Brian Rafalski 14. Luke Glendening 15. Luke Witkowski
