Red Kelly was forgotten. 4 Stanley Cups with Detroit. Inaugural winner of the Norris Trophy as best Defenseman. Red Wings never won another in that era after trading him. He went on to win 4 more Stanley Cups as a center man for the Toronto Maple Leafs, being the only player to win 8 cups and not skate for the Canadiens.

It's crazy that Sawchuk didn't wear a mask in his early years. When they showed the video of him with his family his face didn't look messed up as much as you would expect. There's so many other great players that have dawned that Red Wings jersey but arguably should have been up here, but just like everything else is it will be debated down here in the comments.

Back in the day of 6 teams no one carried a back up goalie. The Wings backup goalie was the assistant trainer. who would fill in for either the Wings or the visitors. in an emergency. Hard to believe but true.

Man .. back in the days going to the little cesars family style joints with the big screen eating amazing actual fresh made quality pizza no hot and ready bs .. and catching a Wings game was always the shit ! Probert was only second to Stevie in popularity for a time . Even with all the heart break that was still to come .m those were some fantastic times to be a young hockey fan in Detroit.

I get that Fedorov was an amazing player and much better than McCarty, but you gave a spiel about how the list was not just about goals/saves but embodying the spirit of Detroit, toughness, resilience, etc. Given those criteria, how is McCarty not on the list? He was a Detroit hero and embodied the city much more than Fedorov, a dude who sat out most a season over a contract dispute around the time other players were willing to take cuts to keep the dynasty alive.
