I'll tell you a couple good solid-state amps that I use now. My drummer owns a Crate 130-watt half stack, and I use that when I jam with him at his studio. And he also has a Kustom combo, about twice the size of the one in your video, and it takes pedals very well, sounds fantastic. He also has a great PA system so when things are mic'd they sound gigantic. I could mic a Pignose and it will sound like a Mesa Coliseum. On the subject of Peaveys, I've owned many and may get one of the newer Bandits sometime. Those things kick serious ass. But my next amp will likely be the Boss Katana 100 watt, or maybe even the Artist. If you haven't tried one you should, they are just cutting edge solid state amps. And very, very, very loud!!!!!!!

Dave thank you for this video.......I think that you nailed it when you said ...''.its about the sound that's in your head'', and i think also that you have the talent and instinct to be able get that tone out of an MG.! I still use my Valvstate VS100 double stack that i bough new in 1993. .....around the mid 2000s my bottom cab was stolen...at a gig, so i replaced it with a MG B cab i mixed and marched the 4 Celestion G12/75 and the 4 G12-412MG (2 of each in both cabs )an proceeded to rewire the cabs with double the gauge . the whole in this case turned out to be more than the sum of the parts. my tone was better than before my cab was stolen😄

Hi Daved, So now I know they shipped my two JCM 900 speaker cabs 1960 A & 1960 B in black tolex back to England and now you have them. Yes they sound great, don't they! I had an injury that I thought would prevent me from ever playing guitar again... and I was moving a very long distance away. So back around the summer of 2006/2007 I sold them along with my MIGHTY Marshall JCM900 Hi-Gain Mk III 100 watt tube amplifier. which was in white tolex. Need I say, that was the worst musical gear mistake of my entire 68 years living on this Planet. I'm still trying to get that sound, even today and I just can't. Nothing has that pulsing, quivering, breathing Hi-Gain over a minute sustain, breathing the Mighty Marshall Roar as my rig did (well that's before I had the amp set back to stock then I no longer liked it. It had been modified for around 120 watts). I tell you I once purchased a Boss SD-1 pedal and hooked it up to it and it made no difference at all. The amp had the same amount of gain, sustain and volume without it. You see I do not know who hot rodded my amp or what he actually did to make it sound so good. But when I had it "Dimed" I would many times be jumping up and down with happiness and would always glance back over my shoulder in fear of losing my life because I was hearing what sounded like a 35 foot tall Tidal Wave about to crash down upon me. But NOPE, it was always only my Marshall JCM 900 7 ft tall Full Stack played through cheap Fender Bullet Stratocaster (which I still have and it sounds as good as my new Gibson 2017 STD. SG Pro HP ($1,899) last year. -Peter

My first amp was called a Badger. One volume, one tone. 6 watt. Horrendous sounding. Couldn’t be overdriven. Small speaker. Nasty. Now I have a Blackstar HT1R. Epic little thing. Same size as the Badger but sounds like a Marshall stack (or several other things). I use it more than my “real amps” (JCM 800 half stack, old Peavey transistor amp which is a great clean/pedal base and a Vox AC15). Kids are spoilt these days with amazing cheap guitars and ace sounding practice amps. And endless free lessons on KZbin. Lucky bastards.

@GuitarTalkunedited6 жыл бұрын
I have to admit that when it comes down to it that responsive connected cranked tone is what I love, and that is more common with valves amps - BUT it is not exclusive to valve amps and as you demonstrate there are plenty of SS amps which can do this. Like you say owning SS is much more hassle free!

My favorite recording amp is definately my Kustom KGA10FX. I'll never part with it.

Man this makes me so sad, I had a house, a big house with my own detached guitar cave, I had all kinds of amps, all kinds to make shit loads of sounds with and as loud as my ears could stand, then my woman cheated on me, my house came falling down, had to sell all my amps to get by while I found a new house, now I just have one amp , my one and only Carvin and I'll never let it go 💔
