I personally think 4 days is the perfect amount of time if you're visiting Amsterdam for the first time! Some of my suggestions could be even squeezed into 3 days, especially during summer where the days are longer. Let me know in the comments if you have other tips or advice!
TIMESTAMPS
00:00 - Intro
01:21 - Day 1: Exploring Amsterdam centre + Jordaan, canal boat ride
03:31 - Day 2: Day trip to Muiden & Vondelpark
05:53 - Day 3: Van Gogh museum, Albert Cuypmarkt, trying dutch food
07:03 - Day 4: Day trip to Zaanse Schans, more of Amsterdam centre
09:13 - Suggested alternatives to touristy places
15:35 - My favourite resources to get Amsterdam/Netherlands related information and tips

Sadly there will be no tulips in October! Best time to see the tulips is around April. The downside of visiting at that time though is that it can still be a bit cold and rainy :) but still very worthwhile!
@AnnaLMarin
@AnnaLMarin 10 ай бұрын
My sister and I visited Amsterdam in mid April 2023. Our main objective was to see the tulips. We were fortunate that it was a sunny day when we visited. However, nowhere that I read it, Amsterdam is quite windy. A tour guy told me well the Netherlands are very flat, so it is very windy, and of course that’s why there are windmills. I would recommend Packing and wearing an insulated raincoat. If you are going in April, it could be quite chilly and rainy at times. But overall I had a very nice trip.

Afternoon @Leesa Yu just found your videos I'm going be in Amsterdam in beginning of May during a cruise. I want to say it be the tulips festival still going on as curious if going be very crowded and high prices due to that. How the weather beginning of May? Do you have any personal favorite restaurants or street food? As the Anne Frank house worth seeing? Thank you!
@LeesaYu
@LeesaYu 4 ай бұрын
Hello! The weather in May is cool but pleasant, with an average of 8 - 17 degrees celcius. Many tourists do come to Amsterdam in mid April & early May to see the tulips, so yes it is more crowded than usual but not at an unbearable level in my opinion. I think the Anne Frank house is a great museum/landmark, but personally I do find it way too crowded (it often sells out far in advance too). For some people this feels oppressive and takes away from the history and significance of the landmark. Try to visit during a less popular time of the day (early in the morning), or an alternative is the Dutch Resistance Museum. For favourite food, I would recommend the street markets that I featured in this video, and Moeders for traditional dutch food (reservations needed). Have a good time!

Hi Ms Leesa, thanks for the very wonderful vlog. Can I ask something? Do you think its possible to explore Amsterdam and Rotterdam in 1 whole day? Will visit Zaanse Schans and Kinderdijrk and the tulips garden only. Sorry my first time to go Netherlands this coming April. Thank you.
@LeesaYu
@LeesaYu 3 ай бұрын
Personally I wouldn't recommend squeezing so much into 1 day. Zaanse Schans and the Keukenhof tulip garden is really far away, so even just doing both those activities would be difficult to do in a single day. I think at a minimum you need 2 days to do all 3 activities. I would recommend doing half-day Zaanse Schans + half day exploring Amsterdam city, a full day exploring the tulip gardens, and another full day exploring Rotterdam and Kinderdijk.

@LeesaYu

Glad you liked it! You don’t need a lot of cash as most places here take care (and are even card only). I’d say €50 in cash a day is more than enough! In terms of what cards to bring, most are accepted except for American Express. Have a great trip!

Lovely! It can still be warm at the start of September, but the evenings could get a little bit chilly. No need to book train tickets in advance! You can buy on the spot, and also tap on/off using most credit cards. I had to watch twice so I could make notes on your recommendations, two questions: is Amsterdam cash only and are pick pockets a problem. I am coming in mid-July for an Alzheimer's research conference and plan to spent some additional time exploring. Thank you for any help. you can provide.
@LeesaYu
@LeesaYu 11 ай бұрын
Very exciting! I hope my recommendations will come in handy and that you will have a great trip. Much of Amsterdam (and the Netherlands as a whole) accepts debit card and cash, with many places even being card-only (e.g. public toilets, smaller eateries, tapping on and off public transport). Mastercard or Maestro is more commonly used, but AMEX is generally not accepted in most places, and Visa is hit or miss as well. I also wouldn't worry too much about pickpockets :) Just be aware of your surroundings (particularly around crowded places like the Centraal station, Damrak, Dam Square area or crowded trams/trains) and you will be fine. I've never had anything stolen here before, it is quite safe here. Have a great time here!

We have allocated 2 days and 3 nights for Amsterdam in late April. Given the high hotel prices in Amsterdam, we are considering staying in Haarlem and commuting to the city by train. We both prefer returning to a quieter atmosphere after exploring the bustling city. Could you kindly advise if this is a sound plan? or stay in Amsterdam instead?
@LeesaYu
@LeesaYu 2 ай бұрын
Yes that’s totally fine! Lots of people do that, also because Haarlem is much more affordable than Amsterdam. Haarlem is very quick and easy to get to from Amsterdam and is also a beautiful city! The only thing to consider is that once you leave your accommodation, you’ll likely need to shed the whole day out with no rest breaks at the hotel in the middle of the day :) have a wonderful time!

How wonderful that you and your husband will be visiting soon! Check out the website ableamsterdam.com - lots of great tips and guides specific to Amsterdam. I would avoid the very busy areas, like Leidseplein/Leidsestraat. I can’t give advice on whether to bring a Rollator or not, but I have seen people using them around town so it’s ok to bring and use if need be! Wear comfortable shoes too, as many places in the centre have cobblestone streets. I hope you both have a fantastic time ☺️

Hello Leesa, first of all, thank you for this wonderful video! It was very informative and useful. I would like to ask you if it is worth purchasing the Iamsterdam city card for like 48 hours? It is quite expensive but they are promoting its benefits as if you can do it all in such short time :)
@LeesaYu
@LeesaYu 10 ай бұрын
Glad you found the video helpful! Hmmm I think the card can save you some money if you are interested in what it has to offer, and want to go to a lot of museums. Cross check the price of museums you’re interested in, as some are not that expensive or are even free (e.g. Zaanse Schans is listed but it is free to enter). If you’re not game enough to cycle around the city (can be a bit scary if you’ve not done before), and want to choose a less commercial canal boat experience, then the card may not be that advantageous. This is a pretty good blog article that gives some cost comparison: drifterplanet.com/i-amsterdam-city-card-review/ ☺️

Hi Leesa, what is the best way to get to Zaanse Schans from Amsterdam? And should I buy region tickets during my stay or better to buy single ticket to everywhere I go ?
@LeesaYu
@LeesaYu 8 ай бұрын
Best way is to take a train from Amsterdam Centraal station. Take the NS train to Zaandijk Zaanse Schans (download the 9292 transportation app to see what platform to catch the train from). Then it's just a 20 min walk to the main attraction (it's a very nice walk, the time will pass quickly!). If you have a bigger group, Uber is the most cost-effective. As for what ticket to buy, it really depends on how long you will be travelling for and how often you plan to take the train :)

Loved the video. I am planning on going this October. What area should I stay in so I can walk to most places? I am 62 years old and traveling alone. Safety is an issue. Thank you so much.

The good news is that Amsterdam is a very walkable city, with great public transportation. I think that the centre of Amsterdam (around Singel), Jordaan, Oud-West, Rijksmuseum, and nearby the Vondelpark are all good and easily accessible areas to stay at as a first time visitor!

Hi. What’s the weather like late October to mid November? Could we see autumn colours? And any good and reasonable price hotels to recommend?
@LeesaYu
@LeesaYu 9 ай бұрын
You will definitely catch some autumn colours in late October. I’d say that by November it starts to disappear and get a little cold, grey and rainy. But this is also when a lot of the Christmas decorations start to come out so it isn’t always gloomy. Hard to specify actual hotel recommendations, but the best locations IMO to stay in are around the Negen Straatjes, Vondelpark, and Oud West. You could also look into staying in Haarlem, which is just a 15 min train ride from Amsterdam and much cheaper :)

any tips for winter-christmas travellers?
@LeesaYu
@LeesaYu 8 ай бұрын
Check out Hortus Botanicus for a little bit of warmth during the winter cold, try eating oliebollen (a traditional Dutch donut that’s only available during the winter time), ice skating in front of Rijksmuseum, check out the Light Festival, if you’re here in November then you could check out Museum Night, and if you have time then you could do a weekend trip to one of the Christmas markets in the South of the Netherlands (Maastricht & Valkenburg)!

Which place you recommend to buy a good souvenir in Amsterdam?
@LeesaYu

If you want the classic souvenirs, best shop is Dam Square Souvenirs, or Amsterdam Experience on Damrak. For more out of the box ones, you could check out Kramer Kumar & Antiek (antique store with cool Dutch knick knacks), Dille & Kamille (it’s a homeware store but they sell some cute white houses), and the boutique shops along the 9 Streets.
