Your grandmother's story is a testament to God's faithfulness. There is nothing quite like hearing someone reflecting on their life journey and being able to see how God has been with them through both good and tough times. She is obviously is at peace with her life now and can see the deep value of her faith and that of her heritage. Thank you for sharing.

Thank you for this wonderful interview. My friend went almost six weeks ago to find her Grandmother in a refugee camp in Moldova. She is 80 years old and had walked 10 km on her own to catch a bus. She was only carrying her bible. They are now in Romania waiting for her visa so my friend can bring her home to Scotland. It has been so difficult for them both. I'm so sorry that the UK wasn't there for the gentle Bruderhof people in their time of need then and it seems now too. I will try to listen and welcome our friends in need seeking refuge more actively xx

I would love a lady like Ankela l do not have any grandparents and l love to listen to their stories and we have family that live in Germany but since the war, we worry about them every day. These ageless gems can teach everyone a lesson and then maybe you might learn something. My family come from Spain and France but I cannot speak a word which makes me sad. They fled the Germans and ended up in an internment camp but it was really cruel to the people that were there and my family have a lot of bad memories of their time there.

Grossmueti Ankela is such a sweet lady to listen to. She reminds me a lot of my own Grandmother who spoke with a very similar accent. I couldn't help but draw a parallel between her twiddle-muff and a fidget spinner. It so precious to have someone who remembers the stories from a long time ago. The Lord keep and bless you both.

My mom has a very German maiden name. Whenever I have to talk to the bank, and they ask for my mother's maiden name, they're like, there's no way it's not the right one. We have stories about my great grandma. My grandparents were like, English, in English. I miss my grandma. She like Sudoku's and I would always get them for her, they sold them at Dollar Tree. She died of bone cancer, so sad. Basically, you starve to death. I still remember going with my mom to get my grandma groceries. My mom and I would pick up an Amy's burrito and eat them at my place.

I truly believe that accents and mannerisms really are kind of the roadmap of our life, your entire history is in there as an influence but everyone ends up connecting to different aspects and develops a unique version for themselves. I find it interesting that the high german also was continued, a lot germans emigrating tend to stick to their accent and lose the high german over time understandably, I was raised on it properly and I have to get back into it regularly when communicating, mainly because I tend to speak fast and the more dominant accent is somewhat slurred occasionally omitting the last syllable. My grandpa had this really thick accent and the only one that has that accent stayed in that region so she never connected to another kind of language, your father and uncles had other influences and a different language growing up, so it makes sense if they didn’t take to the accent. Might also be that the accent is a connection to home especially if you have been pulled away from it and by the time your ankela raised her sons they had developed roots somewhere else and they spoke a different language. The connection to home is part of the identity, one guy stopped my father in my college town because he saw his license plate and got a little homesick having moved there voluntarily, I can’t imagine what it has to be like if you had to flee and couldn’t come back. Your Ankela is an amazing lady and I just love listening to the casual way she tells those exciting unique stories like my father met Elenor Roosevelt, that’s the great thing about spoken history through personal stories, they experienced it in a normal sense while we go wait what again because it’s this huge context we’re mainly aware of when it was their normal life and they had to live it like we do today. How do I get to be her pen pal?

Laura, I’m curious if the word Ankela comes from the Hutterite dialect. We pronounce the A at the beginning differently. Instead of ‘An’, as in ‘Anne’, we say ‘Ahn’, as ‘Anna’ is pronounced in the movie Frozen.
