Inspiring how in depth he's able to pre-visualise exactly where he wants the lighting working in close partnership with director, locations, set designers etc. Very interesting to pause on some of the diagrams and lighting list to see what he's using, from huge 18ks all the way down to tiny little fresnels and rifa lights. Also cool to see what sort of filters he's using and trying to work backwards from the diagram to the movie stills to see what effect each gave.

@2:27, really liked that the editor wrote what beginning experience Ben Smithard had when he first started. Good way to know what someone could do to learn the craft.

Really cool interview. It doesnt teach a thing but it really inspires to work harder. Ben Smithard really sounds like a man who has worked hard to become who he is. All the books, magazines, hand drawing... :)

I plan on becoming an electrician. That will be my way into the industry so that I can become a Gaffer and work my way to Cinematographer.

thats the route Ive taken. I work as an electric for the tv shows and features in Toronto. Its.... okay. I find that doing freelance work is more fun.

@@michaelfrymus Do you have any advice or maybe something I could do to better break into the industry and do freelance? I'm really happy that replied to my comment :)

Would you say Toronto is a good place for that career? I've heard the industry is really good there and it seems all the big filmmakers on the youtube platform live there. I'm still a junior in high school and am trying to map stuff out for myself before I graduate.

Wonderful. I wish someone would publish all his lighting plans in a book. It would make a great learning resource.

Interesting that he can pre visualise all of this. Guess he's gifted when it comes to lighting. No way I could do that in a million years. I'd need to be on set and basically find my set up through experimentation. But everyone is different, I guess.

Yes! I think this not work for all of us! and a lot of great masters in the past didn't work in this way. However such an amazing interview.

What I find about these lighting guys is they have incredible skill and are always bragging about how great their lighting is, but then you see the final movie and they always suck shit. No matter how good you are and no matter how good the lighting, the J's making the film will still produce a load of crap.
