My Autism Journey: A poem in honor of Autism Awareness Month
I was once broken, confused and alone
Misunderstood and mistreated
My heart needed a home
Life knocked me down once
Then it knocked me down again
Though I learned to get up, the hurt didn't end
In a neverending cycle of falling down and getting up
I developed resilience but didn't toughen up
I was climbing a mountain while many around me were climbing a hill
And though at times it felt impossible
I kept on climbing... out of sheer will
After years and years of climbing, I have finally reached a new height
And something beautiful has come into sight
An image of my mountain beside hundreds of little hills
And a map with instructions, promising to guide me and teach me new skills
On the map, handwritten notes from those who climbed my mountain before
They are there to climb beside me, build me up, and watch me soar
It's funny, life is still quite difficult, but I'm no longer alone
My spirit has found community, my heart has found a home ❤️
