I´m a happy owner of one Anyroad 2 since little more than a year, and I rode it aprox. 10,000 km in this period. I made a few upgrades (tires, crankset, stem and saddle). The key word to describe this bike is versatility, it´s not a MTB, but you can ride many diferent roads; it´s not a pure road bike, but you can endure and go nicely fast with it in the road. Even in a group ride, this bike can run very decently, and isn´t condemned to be the "toolbox" of the pack. Maybe is not a 10 in any aspect, but definitely is a 8-8.5 in many. I love this bike.

Agree I made a few upgrades, Stans No tubes Tubeless wheelset w/WTB nano 40c and Deore hollowtech crank and dropped the bars as low as I can go. THIS thing shreds the gravel and even some single track. I don't take it on road much now but it's amazing bike.

@@ronanthonypintuan2192 I didn't really like the FSA that came as standard, so I put a Shimano Sora on it, to match it with the rest of the group set. What I did next was change the chain rings, installing 52 and 42, which go very well with the 11-25 cassette. I live in Holland, and there are no mountains here so I like that combination better.

Before I begin, just wanted everyone to know that I am the type that always keep an open mind to anything that is out of the ordinary. With that being said, I cross compared the Specialized, Cannondale, and Trek with Giant for months...and I ended up purchasing the Giant an AnyRoad CoMax and up graded it with full Dura Ace group (that's right, price is not a concern for me; the looks and feel are). I really dig the shape and graphics of the CoMax!! You really have to see it in person to appreciate how much Giant has manipulated the carbon frame; it is truly amazing, every tube has been shaped extensively to optimize this bike for its intended purpose; Any Road, any time, confidently! I use it daily; mainly on road, bike trails with some off road trail mixed in. What I enjoyed about this bike is the more up right position; less stress on my back, especially with my big backpack on! I inflate my tires to 75psi max and I can easily go fast on the street and trails with the frame absorbing most of the shock, making it very easy/comfortable to ride fast on any surface when compared to a traditional aluminum frame/geometry bike. And, if I want to go more aero I just grab the lower portion of the handle bar and that drops me down just enough to cut thur the wind in my area (15-25mph with gust up to 45mph most days, ouch!). Great mechanical brakes for easy modulation which I prefer over the hydraulics. Switch out the seat with my own favorites and I have an out standing do it all bike (almost all)! It is a keeper for me! BTW, the tires are decent but I would definitely up grade to something more substantial once this wears out... So, to each his own! Wish I could post a pic of my bike here but I don't know how...

One huge problem, the Specialized can only take a 35 mm max width tire; the Giant can take 45 mm. Don't know about you, but in riding off road, wider is better. I was slipping and sliding on a heavily graveled road when I used 35's, but when I switched to 45's the handling as well as ride comfort improved significantly. In my opinion, most of these gravel bikes can't take a wide enough tire and their gearing is too high as well. They are basically closer to a road bike than a mountain bike in capability off road. I've ridden some steep and nasty dirt roads that would have me pushing one of these gravel bikes instead of riding. My gravel bike is equipped with mountain bike gearing and 45 tires.

Those bikes are not meant to go fast. They are meant to go long distances on varying road conditions. Comfort first rules when you ride on gravel. If you want fast get a skinny tire race bike with an aggressive riding position. I guess you based your standards on a typical road racing bikes which is built for a different purpose.

2021 update, had my Anyroad now for awhile, its morphed into a touring bike, got rid of drops to flat handle bars, takes panniers well. done Italy, France and cycling to Germany from UK this summer, perfect comfortable bike for touring on road path dirt and gravel. Very cheap second hand bike to source.

I hv an anyroad1. It's fantastic bike, not too much heavier than the comax version. The bike it self perform well. If you feel the bars are too high you can drop it down as I hv done. It's all about finding the right position to fit you body well on the bike frame.

I have an Anyroad 1. I tried it and the Diverge back to back and the geometry of the Anyroad suited me much better. Each to their own. I use my Anyroad for long rides that include gravel, tarmac and woodland sections.

i had a road bike and a MTB, so i bought a used Anyroad and swapped out gears to Shimano Deore MTB Gears as the additional height allows this and great for trials etc. I replaced drop bars for a comfy flat bar carbon. Now I have a bike that goes on trails, loves the road and hills. I have cycled Italy, Spain and France and use it every day to commute to work in UK on road and trails . Very comfortable, fast enough and i have sold my other two bikes plus unused parts and have more space in house. oh and Panniers fit great so makes a great touring bike.

I read the Specialized, Giant, and other brands of "gravel bikes" and it did not occur to me that the riding position was way more upright on the Giant. You are much more insightful than the other bicycle authors. Deep drop handlebars would let the rider get some speed on. I ride paved roads that connect with trails and YES! I do need to speed downhill rather than ride the brakes on my way back home. Your detail about the all carbon steering tube and tapered head tube were quite insightful. Well done.

A lot of your concerns are based on personal preference not actual design flaws that could hamper your ride, I also agree with a lot of comments already made your review this bike based on a road racer and not what this bike was designed for poor review I would say.

Excellent review. Dollar for dollar, it seems you get more for your money with Giant. Having said that, there are other things you didn't mention. The Anyroad comes with extra brake levers on the top tube, which help on long, bumpy descents to be able to move your hands around. The Specialize Diverge also had the Zertz inserts, and now FutureShock for 2018 to help with bumps. Though some people report it performs differently depending on your tire size and type. It should also be noted that the Giant TCX bikes have a slightly higher stack, and shorter reach, and lower BB than most CX bikes - though noticeably less than the Anyroad, and still less than a Diverge. In fact, Giant seems to be pushing the TCX SX as more of a higher end everywhere bike, sort of like a bike you can race in CX, but able to handle longer distances the way an adventure bike will.

I bought the Anyroad 1 a couple of weeks ago and it fits my needs perfectly. It's not the right choice for dedicated road cyclists or cyclocrossers, but it's great for commuting, recreational cycling, general fitness purposes or just exploring your environment without beeing stopped by gravel roads or forest tracks. It is a good compromise if trekking or city bikes are to boring but mountain and road bikes are to extreme for you. For around 25 years the mountainbike has been the "go to" bike when it comes to allround bikes. But from my personal experience I think the majority of people who consider buying a mountainbike would be better of buying something similar to the Anyroad. A lot of people think it's ugly but I love the way it looks. I have to agree with you on the position of the handlebars and the steering tube. I might buy a different stem to fix it a little bit. Thank you for making these informative videos. Greetings from Germany

How do you find it after two years? In terms of reliability, maintenance, etc? A buddy of mine has an Anyroad1 (2018, canadian version) for couple of weeks. So far he is telling me that his bike drives him crazy: leaking tires (tubeless, both wheels), front derailleur rubbing (big chainring + small cog - Tiagra groupset) when pushing the right crank. He took it back at the bike shop for repairs, yet this didn't fix the problems. For sure, his frame is flexing under stress. Did you encounter similar issues?

From the pictures it appears the Giant stem has 4 spacers under it and the Specialized has none. If you wanted it the same height as the Specialized then maybe you could just remove some or all of the spacers.

I have the 2016 Anyroad 1. I love it. I shortened the stem for comfort as I was stretched out to far on it. I also replaced the seat due to numbing issues. Other than that, I enjoy riding it. Got a good deal as it was the next model year.

Hi, I haven't found anything about Giant Anyroad on Szajbajk channel, and it was a kinda suprise that I found it here :) Well, I'm using Anyroad 1, this one with carbon fork, and it is as you mentioned about. My position on this bike is very upright. It is not good when you want to go very fast on tarmack, but is very well seen in Warsaw, when I'm using that bike and I have cars around. Moreover I'm using Anyroad on MTB Marathons like Mazovia MTB, and this position is also better when you're going down through some canyons. And there is one very important thing which you haven't mentioned about. A second set of brake handles on handle bar, which is freaking useful in fact anywhere, in the city, on gravel, on the mountain bike path. Just anywhere, you have brake handles always just next of you hand. I think Specialized is a bike just for different purpose, not worse but not better.

Jechałem trasę z kolegą z Warszawy do Sochaczewa jakieś 2-3 miesiące temu.

I have an Anyroad 2 that is upgraded with lighter components and it is true the head tube is higher than average mountain bike even but I am tall so this is actually the first bike that I have that is completely adjustable for me from handlebars slightly below saddle level to handlebars almost in road bike position if I put negative rise road stem on and I can just stop and flip the stem in a few minutes. The Diverge is a very nice bike also but it would not let me get the front up as high as I would want for more technical rough road riding. If I were average to shorter in stature I would probably stay away from the Anyroad unless I wanted it for purposes mentioned.

I've got an Anyroad 1 and love it; of course the last new bike I bought was a 94 Trek 1100. That bike had shifters on the down tube which were much harder to get to. The new Anyroad 1 has the shifters right where you need them. Everything seems to work just great on the Anyroad so far. I'm hoping to find some fenders to ward off the slop when the bad weather returns to Western NY. Since I've been a skier all my life and have spent upwards to 100 days on the slopes in some years, I know that equipment is not everything; it's getting the most out of YOUR EQUIPMENT. We have to adapt our skills to whatever we're using. Racing skis, for instance will not make you a hot skier; you have to already have the skills and experience to get the benefit of the skis; otherwise you're just kidding yourself. Anyway, getting back into new bike stuff has sure been enlightening; thanks for ALL your input folks.

I am currently riding a Anyroad2 aluminum and I have to say I am impressed. I have not ridden in a few years and my last bike was a Madone 6 which I loved. At the time I was riding more and I rode different terrain. Now I don't require such an aggressive position but still want a responsive design. The Anyroad feels fast, not race fast but it's responsive. I didnt think I would like the Tiagra but once I got it dialed in its sharp and quiet. Personally I LOVE the geometry.

I ride the CoMax version you showed in the video. I love it exactly because of the high handlebar and more relaxed riding position. I tried roadbikes before and had a lot of problems with my hands and elbows after longer rides. The position on the Anyroad takes of some weight of your hands. The only change I made was to swap the brakes from the mechanical TRP Spyre to the semi-hydraulic Hy/Rd (a good upgrade) and to swap the tires to Panaracer Gravelking SK 38mm (which go to 40 mm on these rims). In conclusion, the bike is overlooked by many, but a great entry to the gravel sport.

If you have a long inseam tall top tube can be great. I lose 2 inches of stack due to my inseam for a size appropriate bike! I am tired flipping the stem up and running a bunch of spacers on a size appropriate frame, it is nice to see some bikes with a more reasonable stack.

The one thing that can't be missed is the vibration damping technology like in Bianchi's infinito CV. The alloy version weighs about the same as the COMAX model. All carbon fiber are mixed with other materials...some don't tell you they do. It was made to go in brick pavements and rocky roads.

Hmm... strange lines... something about the aluminium model that just doesn't sit right with me... looks too odd... but I do like the carbon version though it is growing on me, slam the stem on that baby and raise the saddle... I reckon it would be a good rider and as we say in England... it's like Marmite, you either love it or hate it... and I happen to like Marmite a lot. I wonder whether a smaller frame size would make much of a difference to the height of the stem... either way, an interesting bike for sure.

Is the frame same as 2017 Giant Fastroad comax 1? Slope on the top tube looks very similar... I wonder if the difference between the two are just the handle bar, from drop bar to flat bar?

Having just purchased a 2017 Anyroad 1, I can tell you the photos are deceiving. The bikes are longer than they first appear seat to handlebar, and I found the seat, at least for me much higher than the bars as well. I think it comes down to proper fitting and choosing the right frame for this style of bike. Maybe they do the photos like that because more commuters will buy the bike than racers, but it can certainly do either job. Having tried a few road bikes including Giant, and Ridley, the riding position I have is similar, just a little less aggressive.

All your concerns are not really concerns, it's personal opinion. So this bike is perfect for instance for people (like me) who have longer legs in relation to the upper body. Funny how pretty much all bike manufacturers have the same build people in mind. Like there is one type of people. Giant might have a market here. You say steer is too high ... but you can also say the distance between seat and steer is shorter !!! Awesome for people with a different build.

Giant anyroad is a very cheap bike, go to any decent bike shop and you'll probably find one under $1000. I paid $900 for a new anyroad2 back in 2014. It's my do it all bike, I've taken my bike to mountain bike trails, short 1k 5 day tours, and daily commute to work. If you cant tell, it's the only bike I own currently due to my current living arrangement. I've upgraded mine in order to keep up with later models and as it stand it weigh at 10kgs which I think is pretty good since I'm running a triple setup. Things I dont like about it, no 2nd bottle mount (!!!?), inability to install decent fenders, limited mount point for racks, weird frame triangle means no frame bags and the internal cable routing for the rear brakes is a mess.

William Martin I got the Toughroad for a year now and I love it. I use it on the weekdays commuting to work (50kms each way - but I take trains in between on some mornings when pressed for time then ride all the way back home) it is great! I got the full mudguards and front+rear racks but I have so far only needed the rear for my 2 pannier bags. On the weekends I will also use it for mountain biking (less than 1m drops), I just strip it down and swap to MTB tyres. Twice I stripped it down and put in a set of 30c tyres to ride with my roadie forensic. Man, it is light, sleek, and fast. It is very sturdy versatile. There are plenty of quality steel bikes out there. Steel has not been relegated only to cheap dept. store bikes at all. Actually, you pay a bit of a premium, if anything, for steel these days. Check out Kona, Salsa, Surly. Specialized has the AWOL. Raleigh has the Tamland. There are a fair number of good steel bikes available. Jamis is another brand that comes to mind that offers steel models.

This bike was really easy to assemble kzbin.infoUgkxMesz3KOGEmwmvyKQfLfrRSUXLFzfVHZA and required very few adjustments out of the box. The wheels did not require any truing/adjustments. The frame had some small scratches, but nothing major.I did replace the seat though - the seat it came with was very uncomfortable. The tires need to be re-inflated every 4-5 days, but this appears to be quite common for the narrow 700x25 tires.Overall, in my opinion, this bike looks and rides like a much more expensive bike.

I’m enjoying the bike so far kzbin.infoUgkxMesz3KOGEmwmvyKQfLfrRSUXLFzfVHZA My only real complaints are the brakes and the pedals. I feel like a bike designed for bigger people should have much larger pedals and more heavy duty brakes. I’ve only gotten two really good rides out of it, minimal downhill action, and the brakes feel like they’re already going out. A larger person has more momentum, so I think this wasn’t thought through very well. Also, I wear size 13-14 wide shoes. My feet cramp up on these pedals that are clearly made for smaller feet. Since I’m not a pro rider (and I don’t think many are who purchase this bike) I don’t think that the straps on the pedal are necessary at all. None of this takes away from the enjoyment I get from riding, however. I’ll just head to a bike shop to improve on a few things.

I am really having trouble figuring out who this bike is aimed at. I raced road for years and I recently got a "gravel bike" for a good price and i will be using it for touring after a serious revamp of the components. Good points made here. Its a high end commuter bike. And that is great, if you need to spend 1300 to ride your bike, i love it. I actually love the fact that you can get a really nice bike that is not for competition. Those lines are blurring and i dig it. But you can get a much better spec bike for the money. My GT Grade Alloy 105 was 900 dollars, and better in every way.

what about the giant revolt?

Izzy Dangerous I test rode the Anyroad and the Toughroad a few times and then test rode a Revolt and bought it straight away. I think it was much better than the Anyroad in every way for me. Handled better, more comfortable ride, can take much wider tyres. And the Anyroad I tested was the Comax. The Revolt's alloy frame is even comfortable off road, the fork is great. Nobody seems to know how awesome the Revolt is. Feels like Giant really put some serious research and development into it.

It looks like a hardtail MTB frame with road bars. I'm not a fan.

I was afraid to by a road bike for the first time. So when the summer discounts began, I found out that they have an Anyroad Comax with freaking discount. I thought to myself "Well, I was feeling pretty confident on regular bike, so with something of a road bike type, id be happy with". Turned out, as you sad, I just have a too upright position. I still haven't tried clipless pedals, still havent tried to make a stem longer/lower, but for now I think its too upright. Buy a road bike.

The frame appearance is not what I care for, but of course that's entirely subjective. It reminds me of the LOOK 795 which I find rather ugly, the 695 on the other hand is very nice LOOKing

edwin orama totally agree! Such an awesome bike and nobody seems to know. It's a hidden gem. Gets better every time I ride it. Yesterday I put a 2.2 Maxxis Ardent Race on the front and a 2.0 Maxxis Race TT on the rear so now it's a monstercross.

When looking for a bike for on/off-road bikepacking, the high headtube was also a factor that steered me away from the AnyRoad. However an even greater problem for me was those brake levers in the middle of the handlebars. The ones on the hoods are all you need, but the biggest problem for me is those brake levers in the middle would get in the way of a handlebar bag which I'd need for bikepacking. And it's extra weight for something you don't need. So instead I ended up getting a Giant Contend SL 1 Disc 2018 with Shimano 105, and I got it with a $300 price reduction. This is it here:: www.giant-bicycles.com/au/contend-sl-1-disc As it's for on/off-road bikepacking, I need to make two conversions, first is put lower gearing on, and two is put thicker tyres on. With the gearing, I'm going to keep the 2x on the front but convert from a 50/34 to a 46/30 sub-compact chainset. Then on the back I'm going to replace my 11-32t cassette with an 11-40t cassette by using a Wolf Tooth Roadlink. So the smallest 30/40t gear will be a 19 inch gear, while the largest 46/11 gear will be a 109 inch gear. So basically here I will have both mountain bike gears as well as road bike gears. For the tyre conversion, the bike came with 700c x 25mm. It only has clearance for 700c x 28mm. However what I'm going to do instead is convert to 650B wheels so I can get on thicker tyres. I have looked at my clearances and with a 650B wheel I will be able to put on 36mm tyres which will give me 5mm clearance. Do you think that's a decent enough clearance? I could get on 38mm however that would only be 2mm clearance. That's not enough is it? The other advantages of converting to a 650B x 36mm wheelset are also a lighter wheelset as well as no toe overlap, as well as a stronger wheel for the bikepacking. I didn't get an adventure bike because I wanted the position of an endurance road bike and also the lighter weight for lightweight touring, which in my price range I couldn't get in an adventure bike. And the specs for the price of this bike was the best I could find. So I think that with these conversions, I will have a lovely fast lightweight bikepacking bike. What do you think? I've already go the 46/30 chainrings on order so I'll have those on the bike very soon, and I got them for very cheap. They are actually slightly oval, with an ovality of 0.54%. I got them for $45 US. Here they are if you're interested: www.ebay.com/itm/46T-30T-BCD110-DOVAL-MicroGT-Chainring-for-4-arm-Shimano-Etc/253626191228?hash=item3b0d4c8d7c:g:QTgAAOSw4jFa49W3

The current generation Diverge (especially, the carbon versions) look vastly better. As for the Giant AllRoad, it's certainly no beauty (save for the fork!): it has a very immature design. It's meant for novices and riders who've got no taste.
