@@Milothemighty10 I don't think there was ever an actual plan to make this movie. I think there is fighting back and forth behind the scenes and this films announcement is just a weapon for said fighting. They didn't have a plan to actually develop and make a film. I think they hired Sharmen Obaid-Chinoy to use her as a human shield to make Bob Iger look bad if he cancelled it. Even in a best case scenario Sharmeen doesn't have the experience to justify being hired to direct this film. By hiring her when it is ultimately shelved KK can claim she is fighting the good fight for representation.

Balance being equal parts light and dark makes no sense as it effectively says that a balanced body is half sick and half healthy
@mpnuorva

Kinda. IIRC the usual cope is to basically redefine what the Light and Dark are, usually ignoring pesky things like Will of the Force or the ending of RotJ, or somehow trying to incorporate it to the whole mess. What's really funny is that it's the Balance *of the Force*, an energyfield created by all living beings that surrounds and penetrates and binds together the whole galaxy. So the assumption about Light and Dark is superfluous.

Balancing light and dark as two symbiotic forces comes from the concept of yin and yang. But as stated above Lucas did not hold to that concept. He was fully of the idea that the dark side was evil and balance was without it.

I've said it before, I'll say it again: There's a huge difference between what GL intended and what he and the story group created. The OT's explanation of the dark side is weak ("you will know," defence vs attack, etc), especially given that the guy teaching Luke about the evils of the dark side is literally training him to kill Vader as neither he nor Obi believe Anakin can be redeemed, and the first time we see Luke in RotJ is when he uses Force Choke. Far too many people hold on to that behind the scenes clip of GL explaining his vision and forget or ignore that he never put it in either trilogy. And Legends had a far more nuanced and interesting interpretation of the Force that he/his story group allowed to be written.

She’s not even that much worse of a character than Luke in the movies, just her arc non-existent and then rushed in the last movie. Luke and her are just supposed to be the proxy for the audience and if the plot of the sequel trilogy was better written, you wouldn’t have to change much about her to make her a solid character. The real problem is that they swapped her with Luke while dragging Luke down. There was obviously a way to make her the new protagonist (elderly Luke was never going to be the main character) without making everyone feel like she’s a usurper, but they basically leaned into that angle by the end. It’s so very weird.

Disney is honestly kinda between the rock and a hard place in this. A lot of obvious titles (Heir to the Empire, Tales of the Jedi, New Jedi Order, X-Wing, Rogue Squadron, Jedi Knight, Jedi Academy and the list goes on) are already in use by the same previous Legends works Disney threw out of canon precisely to not be bound by them. So either they will have to consider a pretty sizable catalogue of works when naming new projects, or what I suspect they did with the Rey movie and either pick a title and hope it isn't in use, or use it knowign full well it is.

This is pretty much exactly what happened in NJO in the EU, The Jedi come to wield both sides of the Force through embracing Vergere’s Philosophy, through realising that it’s one’s intent through which those energies are channeled, allowing the Jedi to draw on the Dark Side without corruption, Luke inevitably deems this philosophy wrong in Dark Nest however and brings it back to complete devotion to the light like the old Jedi, but this was how they were able to defeat the Vong to answer the question of is there ever a need for embrace of the dark, I wouldn’t mind something akin to this but like uhhh , are they just gonna make a bad copy paste of the EU again, at this point why didn’t they just adapt the EU like literally everybody wanted!
@jeffchong3901
@jeffchong3901 10 ай бұрын
I agree - the exploration of light and dark was key to NJO and Dark Nest. I think there’s quite a lot to still be unpacked from those EU series, but whether Disney will ever be the right people to handle a more nuanced discussion…. Well……. I’m not sure if the way I read it is the most widely accepted, but I always thought Jacen Solo’s view and Luke’s view in Dark Nest could have been explored more in Fate of the Jedi, rather than the retcon into Darth Caedus. Jacen seemed to believe that self awareness of one’s own darkness is enough to keep to a moral and ethical path, whilst Luke seemed to take the view that self-awareness was insufficient, and therefore the external structures of a code are needed to hold each other accountable. It’s not the first time this concept has been explored; more recently, Marvel’s Civil War or MCU’s Captain America 3 put their own spin on it. But just because it’s been done before doesn’t take away from how compelling this would be in the Star Wars universe.
@StarWarsDecrypted

@@jeffchong3901 Fate of the Jedi did go back and touch on all of this, in fact it seems to retcon a lot of LOTF, the mind walkers say Jacen never even went to the dark side since he can appear at the Lake of apparitions, so In the end I kinda like how they explored it all, Denning clearly didn’t understand what he read in late NJO though tbh that much was clear in LOTF but he came to his senses in FOTJ and fixed it

Nope, I like it. It’s actually how I thought they could save the Sequels. TLJ establishes that the Jedi were wrong. What better way to show that off in the finale by having Rey and Kylo both learn that the “Balance in the Force” is wielding both sides of the Force and they use their newfound power to defeat Palpatine. I think it would have worked. Doing it now, however, would be very silly as it is outside of the trilogies and I don’t think it would work.

Hey Thor, I just thought of something today and I wanted to see what your opinion was on this. I was pondering how and why they were going to bring Ventress back in the 3rd season of TBB and I've speculated that it will have something to do with the pool that Quinlan Vos and Kenobi put her body in at the end of Dark Disciple. When Ventress' body enters it, green glowing tendrils come up from the pool. It hints of the same Nightsister magic that healed Maul and Savage Opress as well as Ventress a few years earlier. Then I remembered in Ahsoka, the Nightsisters had apparently shipped their dead sisters in caskets back to Dathomir. Why would you take dead bodies back with you? Just to use as Zombies? But what if that pool that Ventress was laid to rest in actually resurrects Nightsisters placed in it, and Ventress in this season of TBB is going to demonstrate this to set up what Thrawn and the Nightsisters from the other galaxy are going to do to bring back all their dead sisters. It might sound crazy, but it would make sense -- Kenobi and Vos unknowingly place Ventress' body in the resurrection pool -- maybe it takes some time, such as a year or so-- and she comes out completely bewildered, but alive. This would establish it for use in season 2 of Ahsoka (or whatever series they feature Thrawn and the Nightsisters in) and it would explain how they could quickly replenish the population of Dathomir (or at least the females). Maybe Ventress (and perhaps the dead sisters in caskets from Ahsoka) had to go through a certain ritual for this pool to work. Ventress did have a ritual performed on her when she returned to Dathomir to rejoin the Nightsisters in the Clone Wars. That green water time and time again seems to have some restorative power to it (Savage Opress, Maul and later Ventress are all healed or restored by it). Since Ventress was killed by Force Lightning, maybe the magic of the pool can restore someone who had the ritual performed on them earlier. Those caskets in Ahsoka could contain Nightsisters who had this ritual done in the other galaxy and that is why they took them to Dathomir, to bring them back. This is all just speculation, but I sincerely hope they give us an explanation for her return, not just a 'Somehow Ventress has returned' sort-of Rise of Skywalker explanation.

This is how Dark Disciple ends: Note the mention of Water of Life He took a shaky breath. He had thought he would dread this moment, but he was surprised to feel more a sense of quiet peace than pain. This was the right thing to do, and he knew it, bone-deep. Slowly, reverently, he lifted his arms as if he were holding Ventress in them. Her body rose into the air in response. Vos bore her in the Force to the still, dark pool and gently lowered her. Slowly, the black water closed over her, accepting her into its embrace. Her face was the last of her to disappear, pale and bearing an expression of serenity she had never known in life. He blinked. Was the water…changing color? Tendrils of mist began to rise, green and glowing. Green, like the Dathomiri magicks Ventress had spoken of; green, like the Water of Life. Vos caught his breath. Soft susurrations reached his ears, sounding almost like- Kenobi was beside him immediately, his lightsaber unlit but in his hand. “Vos, what’s happening?” Slowly, incredulously, Vos understood. His heart ached with a bittersweet joy. “Listen,” was all he said. Kenobi’s eyes widened. He heard it too, now, the whispers of women’s voices. The Force had reclaimed Dathomir’s wayward child, and as Vos reached out in it to send the woman he loved a final farewell, he thought he could make out a single word: sister. Asajj Ventress, at last, had come home.

Hey Thor, crazy idea: The dark side is your base animalistic nature, the light side is the reason. Focusing on the dark side will eventually turn you into a murderous psychopath that uses what little reason they have to lust for the alpha role. Focusing on the light side eventually turns you into an ineffective intellectual who's so self assured that they lose touch with their nature. Only by using reason and your baser instincts together can you reach true equilibrium Yeah, I don't really like it either but it's better flavor than "oh no, you can't fault the murderers. The force made them do it" In my take, each character is still responsible for indulging too heavily in certain aspects of the force

I am afraid that you are right and believe that’s what they will be doing. For me at least it continues hijack Star Wars for their own agenda as they’ve done so often. I watched the OT as an 8 year old and heard “the Guardians of Peace and Justice”. Then watched them come alive 20+ years later watching the PT. Now Disney/LF will continue to dismantle that Star Wars lore I grew up with to try to redeem their weak characters, writing and story. They’ve killed the past previously and now continue to kill the legacy of the Guardians of Peace and Justice to idiots that were wrong, misguided and not capable of the hero’s journey they already had been established to have done at the end of ROTJ. It undoes so much of the story.

When you brought up how Yoda mentioned in Episode II that some jedi were too sure of themselves, I realized something. Since Rey is so powerful she could become arrogant. She's beyond doing something evil, making mistakes, or losing a duel. Rey sees herself as having nothing more to learn, turns wreckless, and won't listen to the opinions of others. If done right, she could have an arc where she learns humility. I doubt that the upcoming movies starring her would go that route though.

But Luke in Return of the Jedi did exactly that. He used the dark side. When Vader said "Then perhaps she will" he totally lost his shit. He attacked Vader with all his anger and annihilate him. That was Luke's brush with the Dark Side. I'm pretty sure in the old lore before Disney bought Star Wars that's what every Jedi had to go through to pass their trials and become a fully fledged Jedi Knight, to have their own battle with their own darkness and reject it though I could be mistaken it's been awhile. Anyway to get on point Luke was at a crossroads had he killed his father right then and there he would've fallen, it's Vader rejecting the Dark Side and saving his son that Yoda and Obi-Wan deemed impossible not what Luke went through in that moment.

Shouldn't it be called the "newer new Jedi order" since Luke did build up the "new Jedi" order. around the mando time period. Probably what Jon Favreau had in his original plans for this era. I think that was why Luke picked up Grogu , Luke was looking for new padawans for his new Jedi academy. But Kathleen and her entourage wouldn't have that. So the lapdog Filoni ended up in charge. Since he got that first promotion we've had BoBF, Kenobi Mando s3 and so on.......

Balance in Star Wars is seeking to follow the will of the Force, nothing else. This is why I personally believe that Qui-Gon Jin was the last true jedi of the prequel era, followed closely by Yoda and Obi-Wan and Plo Koon. Using the dark side inherently imbalances the Force because you are imposing your own will upon the Force and seeking to dominate the free will of others. That's why there cannot be such a thing as a "gray jedi," because them using the dark side in any capacity makes them a dark sider, no matter the intention for using it. Sure, a Jedi could use Force lightning, but that would mean that they are placing their desire to harm a person above the will of the Force. Force lightning requires the user to tap into dark side emotions such as anger or hate or malice in order to use it. At one point I remember the lore saying that you had to be hit with it in order to be able to use it, meaning you are then fully and keenly aware of just how badly it hurts and are willing to subject others to that pain.
@fremenchips
@fremenchips 10 ай бұрын
Any action is an imposition of will. Calling on the force to do anything is the force user imposing their will on the force. Was it the will of the force that Qui-Gon and Obi-Wan use force speed in aboard the Trade Federation ship? That would be very specific of the force to will that.
@mangofett927
@mangofett927 10 ай бұрын
@@fremenchips honestly if an action is serving the greater will of the force (that will being that Anakin is found by Qui-Gon), then it's not bending the will of the force. Force speed is also not a power that deliberately and intentionally hurts another being. If we look at the will of the force being the achievement of perfect balance and harmony of all living things, then powers such as force speed that have a neutral if not positive effect on the world around them are not bending the will of the force. It's the attempt to dominate others through the force that throws it out of balance.

Seriously agree with all of Thor’s points here. I’ve already said I refuse to watch the Rey movie unless I hear her order failed completely and someone else needs to come along and help her rebuild as Rey literally going on to do what Luke was doing after return of the Jedi is a slap in the face. I’m not watching Acolyte as everyone connected to the project has seemingly done all they could to distance themselves from older hardcore fans. Kathleen seems to have gotten Star Wars where she wants it with female force users being infallible and far more important and it is the most sexist series around now. Further modern cinema has weeded itself into a series that based itself partially off of multiple faiths where there were rules and reasons for why you didn’t take certain actions. Now in Hollywood and apparently Star Wars if the right type of person wrongs you it’s fine to do whatever you want no matter the consequences against the right people. Reminder people using the dark side of the force is enslaving it to do something it doesn’t want to naturally do the light side is letting the force flow and act naturally as a living being.

Hey Thor, I've made arguments as to why I disagree with the idea of the Dark Side being evil itself that you have addressed, so I won't rehash them all over here. I'd like to instead make a related but different point for your consideration: Let's say Disney bought LucasFilms but never decanonized the EU. Let's say that the EU was left fully in tact and instead of making the Sequels as we know them, their goal was to start making faithful 1 to 1 adaptations of all of the post-ROTJ content and they succeeded in doing so, and the "hardcore fans" got the film and/or TV adaptations of the books and comics they love. What is supposed to happen with Star Wars after all of that? What does Star Wars have to say when the credits roll on the death of Darth Krayt's One Sith Order, which is when the EU timeline ended? JRR Tolkien at one point began writing a sequel to the Lord of the Rings called The New Shadow but deliberately put a permanent stop to it because he had already said everything he had to say about Middle Earth in his prior content and risked stretching the narrative unnecessarily. A lot of pre-Disney content gets love from the "hardcore fans" because it's pre-Disney, but a lot of what happens in post-ROTJ is that the Sith just keep coming back over and over again to be fought in a good versus evil fight, and most pre-TPM content is that the Sith just keep coming back over and over again in a good versus evil fight. The narrative got repetitive and didn't have anything new or interesting to say. The one big exception is KOTOR2, which some fans like myself passionately love because it actually tries to do something different with Star Wars' morality system other than regurgitating what Lucas had to say in the OT. You don't have to agree with Darth Traya's philosophy, but you can actually have a civil debate with a Sith Lord and come to a variety of nuanced conclusions about what it means to be a Jedi or a Sith. The Disney Star Wars content we have has a lot of execution problems, I don't think anyone is actually arguing against that fact. It seems to me, however, that just doing faithful adaptations would have been nothing more than a short term strategy that would do better than the ST did IRL but lead to nowhere in the long term. You would trade the problems of current day Star Wars has with the main problem that current day Marvel has, which is that the novelty of something popular is dead and everyone is complaining about the nonstop repetitive content. Short of just not making any new Star Wars content (which has been an option this entire time save but for the appeal of money), the long term solution to making new Star Wars content that is actually interesting seems to be that you have to have something new to say, and that means at some point you have to start disagreeing with Lucas. If the Light Side and Dark Side are truly just good and evil respectively, then there are a finite number of ways to explore that dynamic as is. I imagine you will probably disagree with this, but looking forward to your thoughts regardless if you care to respond. Either way, thank you for reading as always.

Disney should make the sequels part of the "What if?"-series and then make a new sequel trilogy that focuses on the rise of the new republic and how Luke builds the new Jedi Order. I’ve always felt that Disney is focused on making as much money from the merchandising of both sides of the story. The dark and the light sides of the force, Sith and Jedi, the First Order, the Mandalorians, the New Republic all need to sell toys and collectibles. If everything is gray and has a good point, if all sides get it wrong, then everyone can feel free to wear a Kylo Ren costume, buy First Order toys, or whatever they can license the name to in an effort to profit as much from the merchandising as possible, instead of focusing on telling a good story that makes sense.

Hmm, I agree with your general stance on what "balance" really should mean (and once more raise the point that George should never have brought in that word in the first place, same as force "prophecies", "chosen ones", or "midi-chlorians"). I do, however, think your analysis of the evil within everybody needs some more work. Psychologically speaking that is called the "shadow" and you can't simply "reject" it without causing yourself serious psychological harm. The complication is that the shadow isn't evil in and of itself. It represents all those aspects of your psyche that you need to be DANGEROUS. If that gets out of control - because you try to repress and reject it somehow - THEN it becomes evil. So, Yoda in that episode was only half right - at least in what he said. Maybe his actions actually expressed a slightly better understanding. "Accepting", yes, but then you need to INTEGRATE your shadow, not "reject" it! If you can't be dangerous when the situation calls for it - and in a self-controlled way - you are defenseless against evil and useless to everyone around you. However, you're absolutely right, Thor, that this doesn't mean embracing the dark side.

The big argument against believing that Disney will define "balance" as equal parts Good Side and Dark Side coexisting is this: that's exactly how Colin Trevorrow's script resolved it. Literally that way, with that definition. But Disney's Lucasfilm threw that script out, and of what they repurposed from it to put back into TROS didn't include defining balance in that way. So my hope (and hunch) is that one of the problems they had with Trevorrow's script was how it built to define balance in that way.

Rey: New Jedi Order = EU: Jedi Academy, maybe with an Abeloth type character. Our idea the Jedi is largely based on the Jedi of the prequels and have they are presented in the OT. The Dawn of the Jedi storyline will most likely show the Jedi in a new light. Probably a mix from post Return of the Jedi Legends and from the Dawn of the Jedi comics. And they’ll probably try to mix their Force Dyad with that and make some allowances for relationships most likely. Somewhere around 25k and again around 7k bby, the Jedi Order strayed just enough for splitter groups to form. The Jedi quickly recovered and stayed on their true path for the majority of the interviewing years. It ever since 7,000 bby when the Jedi occasional strayed enough for the Sith to raise. And by the end of the High Republic era, the Jedi was setup for failure, which became unavoidable by the time of Anakin’s birth. So I fully expect that this New Jedi Order will be different from the old Jedi Order of the Prequels, just as it was in the Legends continuity. IMO, I don’t see anything wrong with that other than their stealing the achomplishment of the heroes of the OT for Rey and her pals. However, I feel that they should just bring back Legends and make it alternate universe, and most everyone gets that concept now. You don’t need dumb cross overs or even new stories, other than to show us how the timeline split into canon and Legends, which I was hoping that they would have done with the Ahsoka show and the Mandoverse. Perhaps placing them in a their own alternate universe as to avoid the sequel drama which the Mandoverse will be leading us into.

I don't pretend so be well read into the extended lore of Star Wars, I've only really seen the films (excluding The Rise Of Palpatine which I haven't bothered watching yet), but from my limited perspective it seems that your view of balance in relation to the force is predicated on the force being inherently good. Even if there is no need for any individual Jedi to embrace the dark side to achieve balance within himself perhaps the force in a wider sense requires both the light and the dark. The force is an energy field generated by living things, so In the same way that a magnetic field must have a positive and a negative pole in order to exist maybe the same is true of the force. Maybe it requires death as well as life, dark as well as light. Think of it in terms of electricity. Voltage is a potential difference between two points, the greater that potential difference is, the stronger the voltage is. The force could very well work in the same way and be at its strongest when there are two equally powerful points at opposite ends of the scale, and weakest when it is all one way or the other.

I agree with pretty much everything you are saying, and it's an opinion that should be obvious ti Lucasfilm, but sadly is not. About Thrawn and the grysk, though, I don't see how any mention of them in the Agsoka swries would have had any relevance to that story. I get the idea of building on and refencing stories in the books, but how many people watching would have read them? I don't think the grysk will have any relevance in the live action Thrawn stories, at least where it is headed right now. I don't see Thrawn being motivated to take control of the empire as any sort of contractiction of the books. Quite the opposite, really. He's serving the empire to get imperial military suppirt for the chiss to fight the grysk. If he takes over the empire, he finally gains the advantage for his people that he has spent years pursuing. If he doesn't, then all of that time and effort was both fruitless and wasted. His character is one of always seeking the advantage in pursuing his goals, so it makes sense. For those who only watch and didn't read the books, Thrawn can just be the new threat to the heroes. For those who read the books, we can consider this view and have a deeper understanding of the character and his objectives, and it enriches what we watch. Neither side really needs the grysk to be mentioned in the mandoverse stories to have that enjoyment and appreciation.

There’s a beautiful line written by Mathew Bortolin in his book ‘The Dharma of Star Wars’ which says “the light side is stronger because it includes the dark side”. Disney have a very black and white way of looking at things, whereas it was always George Lucas’ philosophy that it’s not as clear as that. This is not an advocation for Grey Jedi (a stupid idea), but the way Disney seems to be approaching this topic is very frustrating

Ooo, except Disney's executives do not understand that. They are lower case sith.
Star Wars will always be more than what Disney does with it
