“It’s in hell of course they’re gonna swear 🙄” bro did you even watch the video 💀 my main issue was how the swearing affects the overall writing. I couldn’t care less about the vulgarity if it was placed well, that’s why I enjoy South Park. The issue with Hazbin is that barely any of the lines were well-delivered and served no purpose besides allowing them to get that MA rating. Let’s get some media literacy skills in the chat please! Edit: Also, if it’s all about the fact that they’re in hell, why are the angels swearing? Why is St. Peter swearing? If they kept the fact that ONLY the sinners in hell swore, I wouldn’t be as confused, but they didn’t take that route. It’s just lazy writing.

I definitely agree! I loved the show and its animation, but the dialogue is where it got messy. Swearing should be used when a character is feeling strong emotions so the crowd can relate or laugh. Also, I love your art!

An example of swearing used properly and sparingly: In Bojack Horseman, only one f-bomb is allowed per season. Without fail, it is dropped during one of the most (if not THE most) crucial, emotionally-charged scenes IN THE ENTIRE SEASON. I love Hazbin Hotel dearly. I really do. But, uh… trying to watch that with my dad was awkward, to say the least. And if they wanted to keep a high swear count and make it pack more of a punch, I do think they could’ve done some things different. An idea I had was that some characters kept it completely clean (like Alastor did for most of the show, and his swearing lacked that same punch it had in episodes 2 and 5 once he started cursing more often), some characters used the words sparingly, and others cussed up a storm. Another option is to take the Bojack Horseman route that I mentioned earlier. Characters that swear use milder (if you can call swearing ‘mild’), less vulgar words in normal situations, but when things get heated, such as in a fight or an otherwise emotionally-charged moment, they break out the big guns. Idk. I’m not an expert. Just giving my two cents.

Without being too long winded about it, I liked how Alastor swears. I saw someone phrase it as "he seems like he's above it" which among the amount of swears used seems like the case. To be honest as someone who liked Hellavu when it first came out and now doesn't really like any of Viv's work is because of this. I hate to sound harsh but I just don't think the team is good at pacing their writing because they want a 'drama' comedy but then can't EVER find a balance. They set up characters for arcs and then throw it all away because 'cussing would be funny haha innuendo/violence joke.' Characters never grow, they never progress because the second a chance comes to use them in some half baked joke they take it and undermines majority of the events that take place. Why something like Adam's death and so many other moments is annoying to the point it just makes the show bad is because with how long it was in production and I would have hoped Hellavu as a side project would have helped develop a lot of the flaws I do see in these series basically doesn't have growth at all.

Nah dude I get it 100%, I remember when I first played Life Is Strange and there was randomly cursing in random places every ten seconds with certain characters, it got...Tedious, even though it was simulating how college kids like to swear every ten seconds, and that's mainly so that when there's certain characters, like Max, who don't swear often as a contrast, so that when she DOES swear it's like OH WOAH OKAY UH SHITS SERIOUS NOW because everyone else is swearing constantly and she's not. I can't stand watching even three minutes of Hazbin Hotel because of, well, exactly what you said. Swearing can be funny, but it also needs a point, and it can't be every ten seconds or suddenly it doesn't even remotely matter. Seconded all the way!

NO BUT GENUINELY. Like limiting the swears you put in your story can actually lead to interesting character/writing decisions! For example, I'm going the pg 13 route with one of my stories so I'm saving the singular curse word until towards the end of the story, but for other moments where I would normally insert a swear, I did something different. One of my characters replaces swears with candy(ex: "Peanut Brittle!") due to growing up with a younger sibling, while others have different forms of swears since they technically aren't human. BAM free character and world building development!

Seriously, swearing is not a creative or interesting way to write. It can add shock value, but only if used in moderation. I have a character, in the entirety of the series she uses the word 'damn' all of once, and it scares the crap out of the person she says it to. If someone does nothing but swear, I just start tuning out what they say and stop taking them seriously.
@TheKillerMoth
@TheKillerMoth 11 ай бұрын
My problem with Hazbin Hotel's swearing is simple. IT'S NOT A SUBSTITUTE FOR COMEDY. Like yes, shows like South Park and Ricky and Morty swear a lot for jokes. But the difference between South Park and Hazbin is the fact that 9 times out of 10, it isn't the ENTIRE joke. There's still a delivery and a punchline. But in Hazbin Hotel's case, its just "swear = the funny." And I can only think of a few times it made me actually laugh, and that's when they did it SPARINGLY, like with characters like Charlie, Alastor, and Sir Pentious. Since they don't swear as often as the other characters, when they swear it's actually funny.

This was especially true for Alaster and Charlie. Both do NOT feel like they should swear as often as they did (and they both swore relatively infrequently.) Alaster's line about killing Adam in the final episode felt not just unnecessary, but out of character, he had no real reason to dislike Adam anymore than any other angel, so going out of his way to swear at him seems like the writers trying to give him a "cool" line, and it ruins the impact when Alaster swears after having his staff broke which is an ACTUALLY impactful moment since Alaster had seemed invincible up to that point. Also, while Alaster seemed to avoid swearing because of his confidence and 'radio' or whatever, Charlie feels like she should outright DISLIKE swearing, the fact she will swear after getting blown off by the angels a few times but WONT when Sir Pentious dies just feels wrong.

They have a whole other season ahead of them, they could have just moved characters and stories from season one into season two to focus on what was actually important in the first eight episodes. I keep seeing people saying that the show was bad because it wasn't given enough time but... no. They had plenty of time, they just used it poorly. And some indie projects don't even get off the ground in the first place.

I swear a lot. I don't really have an issue with swearing, but what I do have an issue with is that Viv between all projects just isn't a good writer/character developer beyond creating adult content that caters to the humour of a middle schooler with the writing direction of something you'd find on wattpad fics. I get if this was just some niche project between friends who all have the same humour but Viv and the rest of the team are looking to make it big with shows like Hazbin and I think if they [the team] don't start taking parts of it semi-seriously with wanting characters that have plots/progression it just is going to crash and burn. Helluva is facing so many critiques of this with the characters in that show that honestly I would have hoped that there would be some growth in handling arcs/concepts better for at least the level of production the show is at and honestly it's more sad because I don't think Viv makes bad characters/ideas. It's just one where I feel the creator refuses to grow in their medium because refusal for taking in critiques.

This was 2 months ago but I also wanted to complain about something else. I’m not trying to hate, why didn’t she make Adam black or middle eastern?? I’m genuinely confused. I know he acts like a one note white asshole (which is so annoying because an ACTUAL misogynistic incel as a villain would be HEAT) but.. she’s going by actual Bible and religious stuff?? I know it was inspired by the VA but.. the difference between making a character that’s been used to be something else and changing it to something different to fit the VA and it’s not important is different. I was showing my dad the show and he was genuinely SHOCKED (as a fully black person and VERY, VERY, VERY religious and Christian man) that Adam was white. Yes, I know they’re supposed to be grey because of Heaven stuff. But.. you couldn’t of made it implied he was actually black or middle eastern? He acts like an asshole misogynistic & incel white guy on reddit. If she’s actually trying to go by the laws of the Bible a little why is he white? Why are MOST of them white?? It’s confusing me and I thought this would be the best video to share it since I’d already commented. Adam has a great importance in the Christian Bible and Jesus was most definitely Palestinian or Black. This with the “Alastor is black so he can do voodoo 🤡” (Lmk if that was just a rumor or she actually said that) shit while he has no black features and sounds like a 1920s white announcement radio person is.. weird. I know she’s not racist but it’s really not good for her case. As an African American who has been called “sensitive”, “snowflake” and etc for calling out things that are deeply offensive to me as a human being existing seeing some people on KZbin comment about it genuinely upsets me. But this is a genuine question.. other than the VA, “they’re grey because yada yada”, and stuff.. why was he white? Was there a writers choice for it.. oorrr.. IM CONFUSED PLS HELP 💀💀🙏🏽 *ALSO SORRY FOR THE ESSAY IT UPSET ME QUITE A BIT 😨*

The Angels swearing constantly is really off to me! As someone that's been a fan of this franchise since it was a different thing entirely, I was really quite disappointed with Hazbin considering that 4 year wait between pilot and series. :') Also Vivzie most certainly does care about criticism/opinions on her work, so much that she will openly argue with people on Twitter and let her fans go after others on her behalf. And she's now "quitting" Twitter, playing the victim which is insane.

It was refreshing seeing Alastor as a character that swears pretty infrequently, but by the end of the series he did so 4 times overall (imo they should've kept it to once or twice). BUT my point is that I feel like they should have handled all the other characters similarly. Sure, it's hell, swearing bad, the two are associated, but there have got to be thousands of people down there that were sent there for reasons that aren't just that they swear like sailors??? Don't get me wrong, I love the show, but the vulgarity was excessive (and helluva boss is apparently 10x worse which is why I'm afraid I won't be able to take it seriously if I watch it). Things like Lute's line to the exorcists about mutilating Vaggie were funny because they served a purpose, but whenever someone just swore casually (or like 6 times in a row) I just sighed. Going "haha, get it, this is an adult show so they swear" isn't funny if that's all you're doing with it. Though on an entirely different topic I was pleasantly surprised to see this video from a person I'd only labeled as "cool genshin animatic creator." I'm a fan of this type of content as well
@L0ver0fHumanity
@L0ver0fHumanity 11 ай бұрын
My thing is that the in-universe culture around swearing is so inconsistent bc Lute n Adam swear A LOT but then Sera and Emily act surprised when Charlie swears. Why would angels even swear in the first place? At least with Helluva Boss, I do find the humor a bit more charming, but maybe it's because I do have a soft spot for Brandon Rogers, and he is also a writer for that show. I also feel like the tone in which characters swear is different too. Millie and Moxxie swear when under stress/Millie is excited, Blitzo swears pretty often, and Luna swears very often especially in anger. Additionally, since they're hellborn, I find it to be more of a cultural thing, but Hazbin Hotel doesn't establish that as well. Even in some of their songs, there's swearing where it's unneeded (dropping an f bomb in the slow, beginning part of Loser, Baby really breaks the seriousness of that situation) Helluva Boss just has...a different vibe to it despite the two shows being in the same universe. Maybe it's bc Helluva Boss is indie, but even the music keeps in proper tone with the situation. (the lyrics for Look My Way is actually so good for what Helluva Boss is)

The way it was used differently among the cast I think was positive characterisation. Adam is meant to be the biggest jerk and the opposite of someone who fits as a poster boy for heaven, along with being an uncreative meathead, so yeah his frequent swearing and having no care or tact for when he does it checks out. Alastor on the other hand swears, 3 times total in the show. And I honestly thought that was 1 too many, but except for that one all are used well to put proper emphasis on a situation. Charlie I believe swears, ~9 times across the show, maybe more depending what you count, and 3 of those are in episode 1. She doesn't have a frequency to do it, but certain situations can trigger a large frustration. Husk swears a fair bit though in a more casual refined way than Adam. Unlike Adam, Husk's swears actually have emphasis to them. Yes, Hazbin has a lot of swears, but they have a method to their madness, just like south park.

I know what you mean. Swearing can be fine, if used sparingly. But once it's overstayed it's welcome, then it becomes repetitive and annoying An example of using a swear effectively is in Full metal Alchemist. Where the word bitch is used (by Riza Hawkeye) for both shock and intensity. Especially, since the swears in that show had been pretty tame up to that point. And that word had never been uttered, until that very moment. Honestly, if Vivzie cooled it with the swearing, then those words might regain their punch in the show (when they are used).

I loved hearing your opinions on this. I don't like the over excessive swearing (heck, I hate swearing all together) but I actually really like this show. Viv has often said that the characters do that because that's how they talk and, of course, not all of them talk like that. Characters like Angel Dust and Husk throw it around like Candy, Charlie may say one or two swear words per show and Alastor has said only a handful in the whole show (the f-word twice and at least one b-word). I think the problem is that we hear it so often from the majority of the cast that when characters like Alastor swears, it doesn't have the intended impact because we're so used to hearing everyone else throw them around in every day conversation. I love your work and I'd love to hear your opinions on the other things you listed to the side in the beginning of the video. I get the pacing, but I'd like to know the problems you saw with the songs, the plotlines and the voice acting. I've heard a lot of people with positive things to say about all of them, but I'd love to hear your POV and how much of a problem they really pose on the show as a whole.

I think so much the bigger issue for me is not the swearing, but as mentioned the use of it in context. While swearing isn’t the overall problem it’s that swearing feels more of an excuse to avoid writing a lot of jokes because in the context it’s meant to be “pp joke funny. Cursing funny right?” Often times it can cheapen certain things that could be better punch lines or is used in a way that doesn’t feel it takes the time to often understand when and why a character swears. To be honest some of them feel like they’d suit over the top, causal swearing but other I think would be better established more if they gave specific instances on why they swear. Alastor is a great example because he really only swears a few time, meaning when he does it feels like it build into understanding character and leaning more freely into a joke if he was to actually curse. In personal taste it feels like a cheap way to contextualize hell by having every character sorta have the same “voice” by overly using curses and not thinking about placement of using certain swear words- mainly because as someone who swears a lot I know I tend to use swears in specific places and with a reason usually that not every one mimics, and really just left a personal sense of comedic timing feeling feel off. While it’s not the biggest thing I just think some of the best jokes/insults worked because they didn’t use cussing so being able to explore that more without feeling like something is dropped ever five words would be nice

Watching the show was mostly due to my nostalgia because I was first introduced to it when my understanding of good writing and humor was not as defined as it is now. I will say the show was decently entertaining- my main reason to keep watching was to see the character arcs that we were promised with the premise of the show. The episodes lack a serious understanding of pacing and it feels like if you blink once half the episode will have gone by and you are left confused and not satisfied by the end. Also the community id concerningly young which especially leads to those fans that refuse to accept the show has flaws. I honestly didn't think the swearing was that excessive. And this is coming from someone who doesn't swear at all myself. 😅 Like, compare this to The Big Lebowski, which is 2 hours long and has a total of 281 f-bombs alone. That's a little over 2 per minute, not even counting the other swear words. That seems way more excessive than Hazbin. And, if there was any setting where unnecessary swearing makes sense, it's hell. And it's probably mostly Angel and Adam bringing that count up. It feels very in character for those 2 to swear unnecessarily a lot. Idk, maybe I'm just desensitized to swearing in media after watching so many movies with my dad.

HI LIV!!! I’ve seen it as well, my mountain of critiques for this show only grows larger tbh. as an Australian you WILL catch me swearing an absurd amount of times so this will be really hypocritical coming from me. HOWEVER, 55 swear words within 23 mins is fucked🤭, the mindset of “swear word = funny” is so childish and dumb and comparing it to South parks swearing abilities is almost laughable. I completely agree with you pookie, vivsiepop didn’t use the swearing in a creative or even humorous way, the characters are just swearing for the sake of swearing. They actually swear so much that as you listen to them swear and insult each other later on in the show it just becomes underwhelming and sorta hard to sit through, the constant crude insults between each character got old so quick for me, I’ve had my fair share of shock Humor but Hazbin literally milks it dry Viv milked the absolute shit out of shock value. Yea there were times where I thought the shocking insults were funny but it’s gets lame pretty quick when that’s the only dialogue you can come up with to use as filler. I do think this Hazbin has its flaws and I didnt hate all of it, but it was disappointing considering I’ve been waiting for Hazbin hotel to come out for 4 years. While I respectfully don't agree with most of the video, there is a character that is given too many swears: Alastor. When he cursed at Lucifer for disrespecting him, it FELT earned and made my jaw drop. Then it became cheap super fast; like calling Susan an "ornery old bitch" and saying he was going to end Adams "fucking life", those really made me go 😐. Lastly, it came full circle with Alastor saying a drawn out Fuck when Adam broke his staff thing and almost killed him, that felt like a natural reaction! He's a character that's not 'supposed' to swear so dialing it back next season for him specifically would be great.

I actually came back to this video after thinking about something. Another video I watched pointed out that Adam’s swearing kinda feels, weird only because of the reaction when Charlie says fuck. It got me thinking back to the Cherubs in Helluva where them swearing was treated as a big deal despite the fact the Cherub’s kinda sucked all along. Within this, I’ve been thinking about how Adam’s “comedy” I think could have been leveled by cutting him down on actual swear and instead doing that almost childish thing where you replace it by saying something similar. I feel not only would it enhance Adam’s character it could have added a level of humor where the morbid stuff he was talking about was explicitly hidden, saving for a genuine moment of shock to when he actually cursed. Partly too this doesn’t mean necessarily removing all of Viv’s humour that is being clung onto, it could still be dramatic, crass, and highlight that Adam’s is an outlier who sucks but still feels within the heaven’s structure- and makes Charlie feel more like a fish out of water when she swore. It doesn’t need to be difficult changes to characterization to alter cursing patterns to be honest, it just means putting a little more thought into longevity of the writing to keep swearing humor not always feel like it’s the backbone of a sinking dialogue ship

As much as I like Hazbin Hotel, that's also one of the main reasons why I can't completely enjoy it. It's very bland if they just swear for no reason other than just for comedy, which still didn't work. The only one I can somewhat excuse is Angel Dust just because of his job, but the rest are still not off the list. But for me, the only character that was done right with swearing was Alastor. He swore the least in the show so there is a bit of a shock value when he swears. The first time he swore is a shock for me but also funny because he did it to the KING OF HELL and THAT was the word he chose to use to his FACE. But the other few times aren't that shocking, they were just used to insult someone, which is pretty in line with his character. He does taunt many people and like to get on their nerves, but there are only a few that truly gets on his nerves than just being amusing. The other characters? Nah, they don't get a pass. But the swearing is not the only problem I have. It's all the misplaced inappropriate jokes in both Hazbin Hotel and Helluva Boss. It just disturbs me a few times and makes it hard to watch. Helluva Boss especially are guilty of that, which is why I don't watch it. This is my opinion, so you can disagree or say your opinion if you like to.

Thanks for explaining this so clearly. The only character who used swearing correctly was Alastor. He only cursed twice in the whole season and it was perfectly timed. Over use of swearing to me just comes off as unintelligent. Cursing constantly just seems like you lack decent vocabulary and constant vulgarity shows a lack of mental depth. Frankly, only weak comedians overuse cursing since they can't come up with a punch line that delivers on its own merit. I've stopped watching shows and KZbinrs who curse too much since it just annoys me at this point. I'm even making the effort to curse less myself since it used to be quite rare for me.

Hazbin trying to act like an adult show is similar to how Taco Bell is considered Mexican cuisine. Something actually adult (that isn't only constant swears) would be GTA V. Let's just say that if I went out to eat, I'd choose the Mexican restaurant.

Vivzie uses the excuse that “it’s like South Park”, which that’s not why people like South Park. Also South Park is made to be humor, and the swearing blurs the line in Hazbin between a joke and comedy show haha sexy and emotional show with good plot. Also edge lords is Hazbin’s nickname

Interestingly enough, they do end up using swear words correctly to either add emphasis or for a punchline at some points. As in, they do it correctly with Alastor and occasionally Charlie. Mostly with how it contrasts with how swear-free they usually are. But the impact when they do it right still remains limited because of the amount of times Vivzie fails with it.

What’s crazy is in season one of Chucky, he was only allowed to say “f*ck” ten or eleven times. That show does not (for the most part in season 1) feel like it over does it with the swearing, but it still feels prominent. And those episodes are twice (sometimes even more) as long as the hazbin hotel episodes!!!

This demonstrates that the series is perpetuating the notion that the creator of Hazbin Hotel and Helluva Boss relies heavily on a canon of humor that hinges solely on profanity-a tired trope of equating swearing with comedy. It falls flat. Furthermore, depicting Christianity, whether overtly or subtly, in such a manner only serves to reinforce misconceptions about the religion, potentially leading viewers to believe that this portrayal accurately represents the beliefs or imagery associated with hell, thus distorting their understanding of Christianity and possibly casting its followers as villains.

The issue is that the Hazbin writers think that swearing is the joke. You can have a show that uses vulgarity but it needs to be used properly. I get comedy is Subjective and whatever but I like when jokes have a well written set up ,structure, and punchline. The dialogue is so fast paced that it doesn’t allow its-self to take the time to set up a joke with a great payoff. Also I hate the excuse of “ well it takes place in hell so obviously there will be tons of swearing 🤓”. Just because the setting is in hell doesn’t excuse it from lazy dialogue. Watching this was felt like the script was written by a 14 year old from 2009 who just learned about swearing for the first time.
