The difference between your channel and other channels that make this style of content is you’re not Monday morning quarterbacking the aviation mishap. It’s the words you use and how you are respectful to the family and friends of the deceased. It’s a fine line that you navigate with grace and professionalism.

I agree 100%. Every creator here on this platform is so formulaic nowadays. They, like you said, abuse the term "guys" begs for the subs, and allot of them have, like a 3-sentence jingle, rhyme, or catchphrase. there's nothing inherently wrong with that, on paper at least. In practice, it becomes mind numbing and cringy.

Dude, I had no idea you went to USAFA. I'm a professor there and last semester in my CS-110 classes, I showed a few of your videos on 'War Story Friday'. All my cadets wanted to know who you were and all I could tell them was you were a 15E / 18 guy named Hoover. The fact that you also paid your debt to society wandering the halls of Fairchild is freaking awesome and it's going to add a whole new dimension when we have War Story Fridays next semester! Keep up the good work. The Cadets LOVE your videos. Likely because the alternative is having me drone on about Computer Science for 53 min. Love your channel. Keep it up brother.

I always chuckle a little when an ex-military pilot says "I was lucky enough to be chosen to fly..." and then names something like an F-15. You don't get selected to fly those by luck, you get selected because you're GOOD. Appreciate the modesty, but if you didn't have the qualities necessary (not just the stick-and-rudder skills, all the other attributes needed, mental approach, dedication, etc) you would never have been "lucky" enough. Probably the same qualities that make this channel so watchable, and valuable

Hoover, I just want to say thank you for taking the time out for introducing yourself and giving us your supporters some background information. Interestingly enough I would’ve suspected that your career had was full of a lot of experience, and I was waiting for a time that you would share that with us. so thank you as ex-term elected public servant, it felt much easier to talk about or just do things and get them done then to talk about them and propagate about our own successes because after all, that’s what we were elected to do right? That was our job! Anyway, you’re a pleasure to watch! Your professionalism and obviously experiences can help many, and I believe that you do through your channel and I believe that’s what your goal is, to try to save lives! by sharing what you have learned over all of your years, I’ve experience and expertise! So Thank you! I actually wanted to fly for the Air Force, out of high school, and I took the test and the recruiters want anybody they can get….. but I don’t mean it like that- but I specifically said that I wanted to fly, and fortunately I had a recruiter, who was very honest about the steps to do that, and how long that process could take. First and foremost going through OTS, and then well lots of hurdles, so I’ve got great respect for the men and women who are responsible for flying these state of the art machines and protecting our freedoms! I think, now that we have seen the second (Russia, or China?) most powerful military’s in the world, it only emphasizes the true depth of quality standards and the remarkable Men & Woman operating this incredible machinery! Thank you for your years of service, thank you for your service and for help educating folks with your channel. Where you go through unfortunately tragic situations, and the hope that there are people that are listening to you and learning so that accident may reduced because of you sharing this information with other pilots! So THANK YOU! I’ve always enjoyed watching your no nonsense, get right into it, and I always learn something from your videos! I hope to start taking some private lessons, at some point in the near future. But again, thank you for the public service information that you are sharing! Ed From Newport Rhode Island

For what it’s worth, Hoover, the message about that instructor you intended to relay in the original video is exactly what I took away from it: He was a good person on the ground, but also one prone to taking unnecessary (and unauthorized) risks in the air, which is ultimately what lead to that tragic accident. You’re doing everything right, and we’re all better off for it. Keep up the good work.

I have met several private pilots who think flying is like driving a car, (Just master keeping in your lane, apply gas and break, and look both ways before changing lanes, A two Demensional experience and no need to understand is physical dynamics) Most crashed! I have learned, as a non-pilot , and asking lots of question, watching videos, Flying is three dimensional experience and a multiple physical and dynamic experiences,, Very complex and requires lots of hours to understand the interplay of weather, flight dynamics, altitude winds, flying blind , amount of experience, willingness to know you "don't know "and ask for help..etc etc., with a lack of knowledge .... and a lack of experience of any of them will kill you!

Great video! I am a former Private Pilot and owned a 1977 Cessna Cardinal 177B. I remember a time when I had scheduled a cross-country flight (100 miles one-way) with another pilot friend. As I was about to request clearance to taxi, I checked the weather and strong cross wind developed with gusts over 17 knots for the rest of the day. I cancelled the flight and my friend was furious about my decision. I told him “I know my limitations and did not feel comfortable with the wind conditions.” He insisted I continue with the flight, but I headed back to the hanger instead. As PIC, I made the decisions for this flight and was not going to be influenced by someone else. Sometimes, you have to make tough decisions people might not approve.
@youtopia2000

Well done. When I was a young student pilot, I had an instructor who was an ex-military pilot. On my first solo cross country, I checked the weather and didn't feel good about it, so I told him I wasn't going to fly that day. For some reason, he convinced me to fly anyway. Ended up with a bent prop due to micro-burst on touchdown. There was another instructor there from the base that told me he knew exactly what happened to me, because he experienced the wind shear also. Anyhow, the flight begins before you ever take off. The decisions on the ground are very important. You did the right thing.

I used to taxi airliners in my job and one day we were delayed getting to a runway because a coyote had sat down on the taxiway in front of us. He finally left the taxiway and as we made our way to the runway to cross it, I could see a 727 on short final. I told my partner to tell the tower we were going to hold. My partner said no, no...just go. Go man, go. So I let myself be pressured and we crossed the runway....and as we turned off the very short ramp to the taxiway the landing jet whooshed by behind us on the runway. The hair stood up on the back of my neck and I swore ....like Scarlet O'Hara.....as God is my witness I will never let myself be pressured into doing something unsafe ever again.

I have always tried to be humble about accidents and try to understand why decisions were made rather than just write it off as the pilot being a bad pilot. There’s some baffling accidents out there, but I think any professional pilot who’s really honest with themselves has to realize that some of the accidents that claimed our fellow aviators could have happened to us, and we should strive to understand their mistakes to live to fly another day. Much respect to you, and I hope you keep doing exactly what you’re doing. It would certainly be a pleasure to fly with you, but until that happens, fly safe! Bob

Bob, Thanks for your kind words. It’s always humbling to hear from viewers like you and it helps encourage me to keep making videos. Thanks for sharing your background and kudos on your career in the airlines. On a side note, I was assigned to the C-9 squadron at Ramstein from summer 2000 - 2001, where I was on casual status waiting to go to pilot training. It was great flying with them; even though I was in the back! Thanks again for your support! - Hoover

That’s great! Ramstein was a sweet gig. We went over once a year to keep our European quals, and those trainers were two weeks of flying around Europe. A good time was had by all. Scott was great as we flew a ton and upgraded fast. I was a bit faster than some, but was a 2Lt AC and 1Lt IP. They really pushed us through the pipeline as all the experienced guys were getting out and going to the airlines. I was in the right place at the right time and left in 1991 as the Chief of IP Flight, so my additional duty was flying some more! Looking back, I can’t believe my good fortune, and am very grateful. You are very wise to be conservative with your company’s social media policy, by the way. I’ve seen some people run afoul of that at my company. Regards, Bob

Thanks for the great content, Hoover. As a former flight instructor, charter pilot, corporate pilot and 25+ year airline pilot as well as Chief Accident Investigator at my old airline (Pts. 91, 135 and 121) I'm thankful for your videos. I appreciate the time that you take, the research that you do and the low key (no pun intended) way you effectively communicate the content (that just so happens to include 91, 135 and 121 flying) of your debriefs. Sorry for all of the parenthesis. Very well done. Keep it up! PS I did notice that you're the only KZbinr that I watch that doesn't ask for a "like or subscribe".👍

I think the best part of your debriefs is the language you use. With your extensive knowledge of aviation, you could shoot a ton of aviation jargon that most of us would not understand. You don’t do that. You tell us the stories and info with enough technical info to make it extremely interesting, but with enough down to earth and layman terminology that it’s all easy to understand. You also speak with a cadence that keeps it interesting and never bores us. Great job, Hoover!!

You, and this KZbin channel provide an invaluable service to people like me. I am not a pilot; never will be. But, I've flown hundreds of flights since my first time in a Piper Cub in the 1950's. I've flown in and out of nearly every major city in the US, all around this country and to 12+ foreign countries. I have numerous friends, an ex boss, and an older brother who are all pilots. One of the many things I've learned from you is how to judge who I will and/or will not get in a plane with. It's a lot about the personality and ego's of the pilots. I have two friends/pilots who I would NEVER fly in a plane with them at the controls. They are highly offended because they think that I don't trust them. I Don't trust them. I don't even care to be in a vehicle they're driving. (Cocky, and dare-devils about everything). My ex-boss, when I worked in South Carolina in the 1970's was a pilot, and part owner of a Mooney. I flew with him often. He is the safest pilot I know, and I would trust him with my life to this day, although I've heard he no longer flies.... I lost a friend, Dr Chip Brown who crashed his small plane flying out of Raleigh, on his way to work to one of the hospitals he worked at in South Carolina. Two other friends, Dennis and Debbie O''Neal crashed their plane leaving the mountains of NC on their way home to Greenville. They were super nice people, but I would never get in a plane with them; they often took risks. One other friend I knew often flew his Cherokee 6-seater from Cincinnati Ohio, to Ocracoke Island on the NC Outer Banks. I flew with him and would to this day trust him; he reminds me of you, Hoover. Thank you once again for this channel, and thank you very much for your service to our country. EDIT: [by the way, I only mentioned the names of Chip Brown and the O'Neals, in hopes you might do a 'debrief' on them; I would like to know what really happened.]

My dad Gordon (35) was returning from a medical conference at the Mayo Clinic with 2 other medical doctors. The FAA report was 2" thick and attributed multiple causes, including a blinding snowstorm, icing of the altimeter, air traffic controller error, and slowed reaction time due to an unmedicated sinus infection exacerbated by Dr. C. in the back seat smoking a cigarette. Thanks, Hoover, for providing your always insightful commentaries

I agree with your regret of not keeping a journal of flight experiences, but it’s not too late- you can start now, and include anecdotes you recall from your military deployments. My father kept a journal/scrapbook of his experiences, including his training, deployment and flight logs as a glider pilot during Market Garden in WWII, subsequent deployment as a C-47 transport pilot, and eventual job as a air traffic controller at a SAC base in Okinawa. He also included information about my grandfather, a biplane instructor who died before I was born. His journal and photographs allowed me to learn much more about both of them than I previously knew. So a journal can be a wonderful gift to leave to your children. 💙💕💚

Here's your debrief. Among the several youtubers that opine on current incidents or accidents, I respect yours the most. I have watched a few "incidents" in person as a crew chief in a Wild Weasel wing at GAFB. Things happen and you revert to your training, you know that as well as I do. 8 years at George taught me a ton. As I PCS'd to another base I enrolled in EMBRY RIDDLE in a civilian and military accident/mishap investigation course. It solidified what I learned from the accident that brought me into the USAF in the first place. When I was a "paper boy" at 11 years old, our hometown basketball team was lost in the crash of a DC-3. I watched them carry the team's body bags off a railroad car into the civic center behind my grandmother's house as a temporary morgue through our car windshield with the wipers going back and forth. I never forgot that image. The root cause was gust locks left on the aileron and rudder on takeoff. And people where I worked before my retirement wondered why I was such a prick about aviation safety...
