As a Cultural Communication coach, I feel the words in this post. It's amazing how far we still have to go to develop cultural sensitivity and mainly seeing people as PEOPLE worthy of respect and equitae treatment.

unfortunately. And sooooo many people feel like I'm exaggerating because they went to some all Inclusive in Punta Cana and didn't see it. I'm like ya'll need to branch out and see the realness of DR. And I love DR. Some of my best friends live in Santo Domingo and La Romana. But it's insane to me how the open and clear racism is being glossed over. I don't know how you could stand it for years. Would have driven me nuts.

I really appreciate the description you give of race relations in general and the practices by certain groups in Bali. Dare I say, due to the economic and possibly socio-cultural behaviours or just plain conditioning of the locals, a context of colonialism can easily be evoked. 😢

I just got back from Bali a week ago and your " I just want to hug them comment" rings through. My experience there and Vietnam two years back put a real bad taste in my mouth the way I see Australians bullying the locals. As i'll be going to India and China soon i'll do videos. Unlikely to make it back to SA anytime soon. But to make a long story short, there is EXTREME xenophobia. Especially towards Nigerians and zimbabweans. I visited shortly after the Muti Market attacks in Durban. When you're there you can see it. Hear it. Feel it. And it seems to still be happening. Here are a few links from when I was there in 2015 and now. www.theguardian.com/world/2015/apr/17/xenophobia-south-africa-brothers-violence-foreigners

When you choose a place you want to travel, in whatever research you do to decide, what do you do to prepare for language barriers (if any)? Or do you first seek a travel guide to go around with you? In other words, what prep do you do to consider what you're walking into culturally, racially, and linguistically?
@Minoritynomad8 жыл бұрын
The "language barrier" is possibly the most overhyped issue in travel. The reality is, English is the language of money. And if you're traveling to major tourist destinations, most people will at least speak some English. Globally, I've found that quite a few people under 30 have at least a pop culture grasp of English. If I'm going to a remote place in less developed countries like Malaysia, Honduras, or Serbia, I'll do a little bit of studying to get the basics of a language down. Anyone can learn 5-10 phrases in my opinion. When I REALLY need a locals help, I use meetup or couchsurfing. If I'm working on assignment the client will provide me with an English speaking guide.

I'm on the fence about an actual boycott. While I feel what they are doing is ridiculous and unacceptable, I don't want to punish the people for what their government is doing. Same as I don't want people coming down too hard on Americans for what our government does. I'm not sure. I have a lot of friends working in the tourism industry and I'm of the mind that exposure and talking to people on the ground is the best way forward in most circumstances. I want to get an interview with someone that supports this law.
@Minoritynomad8 жыл бұрын
I'm guilty of that myself. Until I started traveling more extensively, I had no idea how many African slaves were shipped to South America. Just not something we're taught. Those in power will always try and oppress those beneath to maintain said power. In the US and UK we have economic power to fight back. South and Central America, not so much.

When I say black on black its black people attacking black people. Foreigners or not, we are all black. But yes, it's far more complicated than that as you said. Also, the violence was happening when I was there. So not just in the 90s. The government is trying but it's still happening. Kingsley Makhubela from Brand South Africa was speaking on it last summer. It's a problem.

As I said in the video, I love Dominicans. And I would never demonize an entire community. BUT, the things my friends have said about Haitians seriously had me reconsidering our friendships. I've seen this twice before. With Australians talking about Aboriginals and Romanians talking about Roma. They seriously don't understand how these things sound racist and bigoted to people on the outside. And in my opinion, how these views and ideas ARE racist and bigoted.

I've watched a lot of your videos and find them very insightful and inspiring for my future plans as a location free worker. My main concern for traveling outside of South Asia is the cost of living. There is a new vlogger that I follow named Thrifty Steve and he breaks down what he spends monthly in detail. If you could do an occasional video like that will be greatly appreciate it.

+Chris The Chi Nomad I'm working on a video series for Bangkok for the cost of living. Simply because people like Steve give a narrow view of the COLA in places. I’ve been enjoying your videos but I could almost predict word for word what you were going to say about DR. I think too many people don’t know the definition of racism. I say this with all due respect. You contradicted yourself: “me as an American I was fine” it’s not really racism then is it? What a lot of people don’t is that Haiti annexed the Dominican Republic after their revolution. DR was under brutal Haitian control for decades. There are racists everywhere. Everywhere.
@Minoritynomad6 жыл бұрын
that's not contradictory. House slaves were still slaves. Being treated "better" doesn't mean you aren't oppressed or looked down upon. It's like saying because we had a black president that the US isn't full of racism. Of course, there are racist everywhere. Some places are just more open and aggressive. Any conscious person of color can't go to DR, South Africa, or Brazil and not see the racism and colorism. Have you looked into the policies in DR? It's patently racist and has been denounced by pretty much every human rights organization out there.

You might want to look into what was the first country to come to Haiti’s aid after the earthquake. The narrative in the media talked about mass deportations a couple of years ago while most of those same Haitians were given legal status and NOT deported. Those same “human rights organizations” look the other way at real atrocities in Asian and African countries. I wonder who funds these NGOs. I’m black Dominican and grew up in Harlem. If you were to say: Dominicans (in general) are anti Haitian, ok I’ll give you that. Dominicans are into colorism: yes. Dominicans are racists in from the American lens: I don’t agree. I don’t fear getting gunned down because of my skin color in DR as I do in America. Dominicans haven’t enslaved or invaded any people (Haiti invaded the Dominican Republic and annexed as part of their first republic). Meanwhile in Scandinavia neo nazi parties are winning seats in parliament. Where is that coverage...
@q4z4qz6 жыл бұрын
It’s also interesting . I watched one of your videos where you talked about South Africa. So are black South Africans also racists? Are the Hutus in Rwanda racists? I feel like the word has lost a lot of its weight. They’re all black (race wise) no? Oh yea and places like Malaysia arrest and expel lgbt folk, which is a whole different conversation. The world is a complicated place, but I see a lot of hypocrisy and cherry picking of certain countries that fit the American racism paradigm.
@Minoritynomad6 жыл бұрын
YES!!! Black South Africans can be racist. African Americans can be racist. Anyone can be racist. Individuals might not be but systems of oppression are real. And there’s a system of oppression in DR against Haitians. Ou literally just pointed that out. I never said ALL. I pointed out my observations. Racism exists on a spectrum. From micro aggressions to hanging people from trees. You seem to believe there’s one definition of racism. It’s far more nuanced and complicated than that. Regardless of how either of us tries to spin it, there are Haitians being oppressed in DR. I’ve seen it. I’ve studied it. The way Dominicans talk about Haitians there is mind blowing. The same way Romanians speak about the Roma. The way Australians speak about Aboriginal s. The way Thais speak about Burmese. Some, not all. But we can’t turn a blind eye to this stuff.

Of course he is going to say Black Countries are his biggest culture shock, he just don't like going to African and/or Black countries. He put white countries on a pedestal. Just listen to his descriptions of black countries as compared to everybody else. You almost glorify india to a certain level and rip south africa apart. A lot of the reasons Black countries are messed up was because of the colonial countries and the U.S. military government you idolize. Dude stay out of America and return your passport.
