As someone who was strategically serial cheated on, lied to, and had my trust and self worth destroyed in a matter of a year and a half, I would've been just as suspicious in this situation, but I absolutely would've sought out the truth before making any permanent decisions. These were signs that I also would've been suspicious of, especially with the friend also acting weird, but I wouldn't have left until I was certain I was being cheated on, with proof for or against it. My college friends had given me the bad advice "if you no longer trust in him, it's already over whether he cheated or not" which I don't believe is good advice at all. How does a person know if they're genuinely being cheated on or if it's something else, or if they're just insecure, without inquiring? No way I would've thrown it all away like that based on similar signs alone. She wasn't wise for ripping up the letters either.

Generally speaking it is probably true that if you’re in a relationship with someone and their behavior has made you suspicious to the point where you find you cannot trust them then it is over. Regardless if the other person has done something to violate your trust, if you’re not able to move past it you probably need to exit the relationship and may need to work on yourself if you think you may be paranoid. A major problem here is that OP became suspicious and then immediately exited the relationship without attempting to determine if the suspicions were valid in any way whatsoever and likely would have realized what was actually going on if she had.
