My Broken Bionicle Collection + my theory on why the pieces break 2008-10

I kind of have a theory I’ve formed from the things I’ve heard about the joint issue over the years. I heard a lot that the 2005 thigh pieces got a lot of complaint for having low friction, so they made the switch in 2008. To give them more friction they made a tighter socket. But they didn’t add as much reinforcement because at the time, bionicle was losing popularity, so they tried to be more efficient with less plastic, to better fit their budget. So the joints were frail and fit much tighter, meaning they would be stressed with any connection they made. So then they started breaking like crazy, but since the line was on its way out, they didn’t bother to do anything about it other than offer replacement parts online.

I would recommend people to fix the joint issue with Modge Podge and nail polish cars to match the joint colors to fix the issue and repair it

(This only covers 2007 lime joints) The reason is because of the plastic they used combined with a heating and cooling error caused air bubbles to appear inside of the pieces, basically making them hallow and as such very fragile due to the plastic they used.

I remember having to replace any Ehlek / Toa Mahri Hahli's broken joints from ones from my green Visorak, and running out!

I got back into Bionicle a month ago and bought some pieces to make my own Toa. I bought the 2008 joints because I thought they looked sleeker and they were in pure black but I didn’t know about how fragile they were and after sometime of play I noticed some cracks 😩🥲

I do have some CCBS pieces that broke, but nowhere near as much as my bionicle/pre CCBS hero factory pieces

Just use a hairdryer to heat up the sockets before connecting or moving the figure. Even the lime pieces get 0 cracks if they are properly heated up before connecting. Make sure to clean the ball joints when its assembled, you dont wamt dust getting between the socket and ball, introducing more friction and tightness.

I want to bring up the Ben 10 parts. They came out in early 2010 at the same time as the Stars but use completely different joints. The socket designs are different from the HF ones however I'm pretty sure they use the same type of plastic (or at least different plastic from the Bionicle joints). Performance wise they are just as durable as their HF counterparts and have just as much friction. Now the only Ben 10 parts I have came from HF sets (because why would anyone buy those cursed things) but I don't believe they've changed since their inception.

Use Gorilla Glue epoxy resin stuff is strong and give the Bionicles back to strength in joints. That's the best way I figured out how to fix them or just replace the parts

Easier to bux new parts on the internet even brand new ones and your bionicle will e better if you want to also display them for play you cna buy even used older type of sockets and parts

Unfortunately I can also confirm that they become brittle with age. A few years back I bought a mint condition Roodaka and one of the pieces that held her jaw together literally crumbled like a hard cookie as soon as I the axle through it.

i have a piraka with the blue long leg piece just broken in place it was on the shelf since it came out and one day it was on the ground abd the upper part cracked to pieces little itsy bitsy pieces it's disintegrated now i have to find spare piraka parts...

this was also how I was introduce to bionicle I even vividly remember back in 2008 as if it were yesterday wanting any one of the phantoka sets but eventually I did get some of them but the mistika and glatorian though

fast forward to ~2017, my 2.0 sockets still have the actual ball socket sturdy, instead the axel sockets on just about all of them have cracked, oddly, the balls sockets of my CCBS friction adders also started to crack around this time

It always pissed me off that the kept bringing back easily broken pieces like the 2 claw feet and the glatorian head in Hero Factory sets when all the other parts would be bulletproof. It's definitely just poor socket design, seeing as the issues persisted for half a decade after bionicle's run with those.

I would recommend people to use mod podge and nail polish to match their Bionicle plastic pieces gloss it and put nail polish again after they're broken to repair it and make it solid.

It's almost like after 2007 they just gave up and DESIGNED the things to crack. If you notice, the later joints (2008,2009) crack almost half the time, but when they do its a hairline crack hard to see at first. (until it fully breaks off lol)

I dropped my computer on one of my mocs. A WHOLE ASS COMPUTER. and the forearm limb piece had literally flipped sideways, side of ball joint facing the holder thing side of the upper arm piece (for context it was those hinge joint sides of a piece and the upper arm was the one you were talking about at 4:51). Piece suffered a minor crack, still have it on my moc and still works fine.

I was fortunate to be a 2001 - 2002 fan and never had that issue of cracking pieces. I still have not had a cracked socket piece to this day and am so grateful for that. But it is odd.... why would they start off so well and then... change? I think color is the reason. Like my podracer set from 2011, all the brown pieces from that set literally crumbled. Just the brown ones, and they were standard plates and bricks.

it also seems that older sockets were very thin. Even my pieces from 2004 have very minor cracks, but also CCBS sockets are much thicker than the older system

I used to play with my hero factory characters a lot and also took them apart a lot which led to the earlier parts breaking

I've only ever had pieces from ccbs or 01-05 break from intense play only time a ccbs joint broke was on transparent pieces. I had a few 09 sets however, so those broke from normal playwear. In the future I will be not taking any of those sets apart once built and will buy them in new condition most of the time.

Those pieces on thunder’s (hero factory 1.0 villain) thighs are actually from the ben 10 constraction line, which for some reason has really bulky socket joints much like the ccbs joints. This shows that with the first wave of hero factory they we’re trying to avoid the breakable joints so they could hold out time until they could get the sturdier ccbs system out.

Funny that I was born in 2001 as well, 3 months after Bionicle's debut. And my first Bionicle set was Gresh but it was from the Stars line instead of the Glatorian Gresh which was better than the Stars version.

idk HOW but they even included bionicle 08-09 parts still in 2012. i got toxic reapa and i got bionicle style for the legs for reapa. idk how this was possible but it happened but in 2013 that´s when there was no bionicle style parts so it ended, btw jangbricks got "jetbug" with bionicle parts as well. looks like bionicle corpses still stayed until 2012.

I bought vakama last year because I liked his character in legends of Metru Nui. He is stury. I bought him already opened and used, and he still held up. I also was born in 2001 and grew up with glatorian wave. Bionicle cancelled at the wrong time unfortunately.

Because they went cheap on us the first release and even the throwbots are still in good condition and sometiems the neighbour kids come and paly with them they are still not broken but i'm not lettnig them play with the past 2008 ones because those are rare and weak as fuck....

My younger self usual play of them and kept pull out and in many times. Till most of the joints. Broken. Now as adult till recently I buy old and new joints to replace them for most of Original and my MOCs. While some hold today and some were updated. And I would say my advice from near broken or crack joints socket, put it on a joint gentle if it's original Character. Place a dab of Krazy Glue, just gently enough so the crack can be fused with a plastic like. Do it like two or three time so it can be durable. But you are unable to pull it off from the joints. But to leave it on attach. If break. Just recycle them on a Recycling bin so rather than Thorw them away like a waste.

Maybe depends on the weather and conditions in which you store them, because I've had also plenty of Bionicles from 2008-2010 and most of them are in good shape. Maybe your normal cracked joint for some, but nothing other than that. Then again maybe heat or humidity make the pieces more fragile.

I got myself a Tanma recently and yeah the joints cracked (wasnt suprised even the seller sent him with an extra leg piece 😂). Anyways, my idea was to just get some friction stoppers from hero factory and then super glue them where the broken area is then I have a working piece again. Tho it will make him a bit taller.

I was a big Bionicle fan in the early days like from 2001 to 2005 but than I kinda stopped buying them (getting from my parents), because I became disinterested in the whole series. But later I bought a set from 2009, the 7116 Tahu, which has like 19 parts in it. New hands, new feets, new everything. I kid you not, I literally just put it together and it was already cracked. Just putting it together once, out of the box. It was a brand new set from a legit shop, not some second hand bs. Now since than, I didn't even bother with it, I put it together as good as I could and I just put it on my shelf, than later at some point I just put it in a box containing all kinds of Lego. I sorted all my Lego many years later and like 5 pieces were broken. By not doing anything, just sitting in a box for years. I really loved Bionicle as a child, until I lost interest, but this made me kind of hate Bionicle, because I had many of them and many were broken, even before this 2008 period. They were just poor quality unfortunately and I wish I chose some other Lego when I was a child, because these Bionicle sets are just useless now, I can't even put all of them together unless I try to hunt many broken parts, unlike my other old Lego sets. They looked good and were a great theme, but their playability was so bad.
