I just bought a 2011 E70 X5M with 150,000 miles for $12,500 USD two days ago I love it the interior and everything is great with some minor paint defects nothing some time and care can't fix. The previous owners have maintained it very well with oil changes, services, new coils, new PCV valves, spark plugs replaced, axles replaced, water pump replaced. Only thing I'm going to get checked out in a local BMW shop this week is the condition of the turbos and other things I worry with the high mileage. It won't be my daily, so I'm not concerned much really for wear and tear, plus if it needs smaller work, I'm disabled so it gives me a project to work on if it's light work I can do it to pass time. I bought it for mostly space for a new child incoming and needed the extra space from my daily pickup truck

$22k! what a bargain - would've loved to find that steal of a deal. M5 is always going to be quicker due to power-to-weight ratio. I want to get one of these so bad - but don't have a garage right now, only off-street outside car park - probably not an engine out workplace :(

GREAT CHANNEL!! I've picked up a 2013 x6m for just shy of 10k$, has a rod knock seems like, will be opening the engine next week to see if in anyway it can still be saved until a new engine can be built, failed at 65k miles( the car was towed after went into limp mode then I changed solenoids, limp mode and codes gone, it had also very fine copper particles in oil filter. On start up, idle and revs to 2,5 runs great but past to higher rpms has a rattle, I've seen guys polishing crank in case damaged and put new rods in and drive for another 15k before properly rebuilding, i understand its more likely not going to help but still want to give it a shot as the cost of this experiment is fairly low. Wonder what's your take on that, cheers!
@dnl35projects10 ай бұрын
Hi, thank you ! My suggestion is that you stop driving it and open the engine for a rebuild - the less damage you have inside the cheaper it is to rebuild and oven if your crank is scratched you could get it reground.

I've only just found this channel and it's impressive. What is you back ground Daniel? What are you doing now as a job? I would caution you for selling the dream that BMW's are even remotely reliable or financially smart to own in any way! Even if you maintain them fastidiously. It's fine for people to love them anyway. But don't send them down the river, haha Side note of interest, I've had X5M's where the engines accumulate oil in the intakes. 2 of them with low km's, burned massive holes in the left banks plastic intake manifold. Towards the back where it pools, obviously because they're on the low side of the motor.
@dnl35projects Жыл бұрын
Hi, I worked in IT for a few years after finishing university but getting greasy and smelling like engine oil was always my passion 🤣 - I’m not trying to sell anything but share my experiences working on BMWs since I own the two worse cars BMW ever made (E60 M5 and E70 X5m) but apparently I’m doing something wrong because once I fully understood and serviced these cars they never broke down and I’m somehow RUINING the BMW bad reputation 😝
@secretsquirrel9722 Жыл бұрын
@dnl35projects haha, they're far from the worst models. You're not wrong to an extent. I always taught owners that their cars 100% have a soul. If you own one as an individual and treat them well, they will return that kindness. Even down to teaching them how to drive them matters if you intend on long-term ownership. Any kind of delay in maintenance or ignoring a repair, you will certainly pay! You will likely pat anyway, haha. You are potentially sitting on a gold mine with the E60. You could take it from the gutter to the top of the pops in one move IMO. Stick shift conversion! Look into it. Should be right up your alley for the channel and the car. First thing I would do on any E60 M5 or E46 M3. More straight forward on the M3 with it having the manual option from factory. But the main components remain. You just swap the smg rubbish for a stick and left pedal assembly. SMG is an abomination and should be purged from existence!

Hi Daniel, I'm considering buying a 2011 model with 39,000 km. Can you give me some tips for preventive maintenance? Since my country is tropical and these engines are sensitive to high temperatures.
@dnl35projects Жыл бұрын
Hi Carlos, it depends a lot on what's been done to the car so far. 39k kms isn't a lot but bear in mind the car is 12 years old and being a BMW will naturally have few oil leaks and other things to be addressed. I'd start by doing the common things like filters and fluids, then move onto spark plugs and coils (if they are older than 5 years old) - A transmission fluid change or service is also highly recommended. These cars don't really mind running in hight temperature weather however you cooling system and battery must be 100% in order to keep up with cooling the engine. For more details feel free to send us an email.

I am one of the dumbasses that bought a used X5M, the cheapest one I could find in Europe at the time. Originally ordered to Moscow, but relatively low milage (verified). 2011 with 64.000km (in 2021), paid 24k euro for it with two sets of wheels :D Love the car, hate a few things though. Mostly the fuel consuption (fun tax) and the exhaust note. The Exhaust note I am now working on, but I have a totally different approach than ever done before, I am starting with the exhaust manifolds. The fuel consumption is 20L/100km around town, but goes down to 14.5L if crusing at 120km/h, My E60M5 however had 22L/100km minimum around town, and I never got it below 15L on the highway, but I was 20 years younger back when I bought the E60M5, might have a play in the consumption. The ZF6HP isn't bad but after having a car with a 8HP it's not good Really the most annoying thing now is the knocking noise from the rear hatch, cant locate it!! Its on the right side, and I have tried everything.
@dnl35projects Жыл бұрын
I can see you like your X5M as much as I do - They are. definitely not as bad as some people say. As for the exhaust, just install an X pipe, that would be the cheapest and most cost effective way t bring up that V8 sound this engine should have from factory
@farturinn Жыл бұрын
The X-pipe will not bring the V8 sound unfortunately, its down to the crossflow design of the exhaust manifolods, propriatory to the S63B44, hence its the only hot-v in the world that does not (and will not) sound like a V8 no matter what you do to the exhaust after the turbos. It might sound half decent on cold start but once warm and on revs it will just sound like a loud twin inline 4cylinder. Have not to date heard a S63B44 (any version) that sounds nice, what ever people have done to the exhaust, cheap, expensive, straight pipe, x-pipe or H-pipe.. the sound is killed at the source by smothing out the exhaust flow with the manifolds. I bought F10M5 manifolds (and turbos) and I am currently in the process of cutting them up to seperate the two cylinder banks, which is in line with the N63 (and that sounds great) and evey hot-v from other manufacturers, wheather its Mercedes or VAG/Porsche/Lambo.
