Robert thanks for the great information. I myself tow a 4K lb. Travel trailer with a third Gen Tacoma and I’m getting around 14 miles per gallon and when I’m not towing I’m getting around 19 miles per gallon. And like you I love the reliability. I also upgraded all my lights to LED’s and upgraded all my suspension as it’s a lot easier to work on then what you where saying about your Chevy. I used to be a Chevy man up until 3 years ago. Thanks for all your great content, my wife and I enjoy your videos. Stay safe on the road.

Hi Robert, I have the same truck in a 2016. I agree with all of your likes, although I think you may have a little bit better tech in yours than I do in mine. Maybe it is just the different years, or maybe because I’m bigger than you, because I really like the seats and mine are super comfortable. I’ve had mine since 2017 and have been really happy with mine. Mine is a 4X4, and I have put running board steps, a bed cover, sprayed Line-X in the bed, head rests in the back seat. My Colorado has been extremely reliable! I tow a 2020 Micro Minnie and I love it too. I had my truck before you got yours, but you directly influenced my decision to buy my Minnie!

I have a 2018 Colorado Z71 4x4, and I agree with your assessment. Overall, I have been very happy with it, and no issues with towing my R-Pod 196. I definitely agree with you about the lights. As an amateur astronomer, it would be nice to have an easy way to turn off all those lights to preserve my night vision. I opted out of On Star, but my mother swears by it in her GM car, and I’m glad she has it since she is 81.

Hi Robert! Thank you for sharing your experience about your Colorado. There are some likes and dislikes that I can agree on. However I own a 2017 Colorado Diesel Z71 trim with 4 wheel drive. I get it about the lighting that can be annoying about the light brightness and all. However i use the switch near the overhead lights above the center console and switch to off so the cabin light stays off at all times unless I have to manual put it on door mode if I wanted it back on. Right now it is common with almost every cars that the radio and other features stays on until you open the driver’s door or wait for like a minute. I love my truck, I can’t complain much about it and it has been very reliable with great fuel efficiency with average 16 miles to the gallon while towing .It is actually very quiet (4 cyl turbo diesel) when you’re driving it with all the windows closed. I tow a micro Minnie as well and it has been doing a great job. It drives like you’re not towing anything. My Minnie weights about 5000 lbs with things loaded in it. Again, thanks for sharing. See you on the road. 🤟🏻😁🤟🏻

Prior to setting off on my nomadic life when I was still looking at trailers I’d considered the Colorado diesel. When I decided I preferred a overland approach to living as a nomad I got a Jeep unlimited JL Rubicon and put an Ursa Minor camper top on it. Allows me to go places that the majority of RV’s (and people) cannot.

Maintenance free is my top priority too! Love my Mazda 6…but my old SUV drove like a car! Smooth and nice in the snow…4X4 is a must, especially in the mountains! Enjoy your truck…☕️

The light brightness in the instrument panel when you turn the lights off is meant to actually bother the driver by design, it is not only Chevy that does this, if you are driving at night with the lights off the brightness at full will remind you to turn your headlights ON, you’ll be surprised how many people forget to turn on their headlights , some more expensive cars will just pop a reminder to turn them on if it knows that it is nighttime and you have them off.

I see people all the time on the roads at night who have no taillights on, but their daytime running lights. I can always tell they must have lighted interior dash lights that are on all the time. People need to learn to set their auto feature so the lights come on at dusk automatically. I think it’s a great feature, you just set it and forget it and the vehicle does it for you😁

Good for you Robert! I enjoy watching you drive all over for vacation. Had a 2015 Silverado it was roomy. I had a gas Colorado and it was nice. I had the V6 that did not have AFM and it was fine. I have a diesel 17 Colorado and a Micro Minni 2100bh. I get about 14 mpg on the highway towing. I do my own filters and oil changes so it’s not so bad. Hey am not a mechanic I am in IT. We also have a 16 Suburban with 5.3l and we get about 9 mpg when towing. I think you are better off looking up the VIN and finding a truck completed on a Thursday. Avoid vehicles completed on Monday or Friday! Good luck and keep up the great videos!

I bought the 2016 Chevy Colorado Duramax Diesel new in 2016. So I have had it for 6 years now. It is great when towing. I had a 2010 Fun Finder Xtra XT245 Toy Hauler. My little diesel towed it like a champ. 13 to 16 mpg. Overall I have been very happy with it. Between 60k-65K miles, I have had to have a few sensors replaced. But other than that, it has been very reliable. Keeping my fingers crossed that it will be reliable for the next 60k miles. I live in Atlanta if you would like to stop through and see it.

Thank you, Robert for your review. I too, like a little more control of my car mechanics. It is creepy to have a gizmo in space tracking your every move. The only time I think it would be handy is calling a tow truck or help when you can't. A comfortable seat is important. Traveling on long adventures, seat support is important. Not to comfortable that you want to sleep. Keep on being free.

Yep, we can relate totally. One of the most annoying things for us is recycled air vs. fresh air button. The computer on ours turns it off when the truck feels it's necessary. Drives us insane. We want total control over our own vehicle and do not want it to be switching things around on it's own.

Hi Robert, when I saw the Colorado review I decided to watch not knowing it was you. Of course I was excited when I figured out it was you. I started following you when I got my Colorado diesel in late 2017. I'm glad our trucks are good enough for the money. I think of my tow mode button as an opposite to the old school overdrives from yesteryear. Your kinda a special case needing tow mode most of the time. I get 17 mpg towing & 28 on the highway empty. Yup, the headlights are not so good. My knee hits the headlight switch every once in a while. Yes the driving position is slightly go cart ish and ones foot needs to angle right on the gas peddle which is uncomfortable. Seat material does not like to come clean too. Tow mode with the diesel is pretty awesome.! I to had a Sorento & now have had a Telluride for a year now. Makes the Colorado feel very dated tech wise. :) No worries. I just have to tell myself that my old truck was a Ford Ranger. Strangely, it was a good truck. Thanks Robert for your videos. I enjoy your digital offerings, you, your family and your music. Headed to Costa Rica Friday, should be an eye opener... Bill

Been waiting for this review. Thank you. Looks like the diesel is going away next year, both engines replaced with a gas/turbo combo from the larger truck. I know those who have the diesel mostly love it, but I like the simplicity of the 3.6 (no turbo, no diesel). It looks like this might be the last model year for that.

Yea GM axed the plant where they made the diesels, so the new models don't have the option. I went diesel specifically because the Colorado/Canyon was the only USA assembled medium duty truck with a diesel. All other options are HUGE trucks.

I have the same truck, same year, 2WD. All points I agree on in my experience. The seat is fine for me due to my dimensions, but one thing that is so true is not enough storage space! That glove compartment is so small that you can barely fit. . . a pari of gloves in it! lol We tow a Viking Saga 17FQ, so a similar size and weight trailer as well. We are only at 54,000 miles, so I hope our luck with ours is like that of yours.

I share your frustration with the lights coming on full blast when you're trying to adjust your eyes to the surrounding levels. What I do is I drape a piece of black felt fabric from the sewing department over the gauges and center console screen. That way I keep my night vision. Otherwise I'd pull the fuse for the bed lights and mirror puddle lights that come on every time I open the door.

Hi Robert, maybe try RAM1500? In this car you will find all advantages of Chevy + much more and on top solutions (settings in car computer) for disadvantages of Colorado. Major advantages: comfortable seats, air suspension for a very comfortable ride. My car has 5.7l petrol engine and for Germany liquid propane installation (it's cheaper). In this car on holiday I travel together with my family (4 people) up to 1200km in one day and everybody is happy also seating on 2'nd row! My only one disadvantage of RAM1500 is the size to manage driving in Europe! I like your channel, well done! Greetings from Germany!

That’s great mileage for the gasser. We had a 2016 Duramax, LT trim, 4x4, crew cab, long bed and would see 34-35mpg regularly. We just got a 22 Duramax, crew cab, short bed and with a lift and the air dam off see 32-34 regularly. Haven’t towed a camper with this one yet but towing a 25’ unit with our old one would normally see 15mpg which was amazing. Actually the engine noise is pretty low. Towing it makes full torque at 2,000 rpm so it isn’t revved high when towing unless it is a really big grade so I would think it is actuallly a little quieter than the gas which has to rev more to do the same work. Glad you had good experiences with your truck, I think these trucks are greatly underaged and that’s coming from a Toyota guy. 😆

I tow with a diesel (F450). Boy that thing can tow!! But I'm towing 16,000 lbs of 5th wheel. The upcharge for a diesel is considerable, the routine maintenance is a lot more frequent and expensive, and the higher cost of fuel is not offset by the increased mileage. So for a little MiniTini as you tow, I would suggest staying with gas.

I just finished a 3700 mile trip towing a 3500 lbs trailer with a diesel 4x4 colorado, my mpg for the entire trip was 18.9 mpg. Like he said he was happy with 11 mpg. Getting an 80% gain in fuel economy would surely offset the cost in maintenance. Let alone getting the added torque and exhaust breaking for all those mountain crossing he does.
@jeffreyrigged
@jeffreyrigged 2 жыл бұрын
@@anthonytetreau522 thats only a 71% increase. the diesel is a 5300 option. at your mpg vs his 11. thats a 9 cent savings. he would have to drive 58888 to break even just on the upcharge for a diesel. thats not including maintance def or any other odds or ends. is his trailer as heavy and similar aerodynamically? for example my car trailer i can pull 8k and get 15 mpg all day long. box trailer drops it to about 11. just pointing it out. i personally have not saved a dime by owning a diesel. some may idk. i see alot with regular lightweight campers similar to roberts are getting roughly 13 avg. so in that is his case he would be crazy to go toward diesel for money savings alone.
@anthonytetreau522
@anthonytetreau522 2 жыл бұрын
@@jeffreyrigged 80% was a rough estimate, without breaking out a calculator. Also, you can not go off the build price when you build on the website, other options are added when you check the diesel option (LT-$5210, Z71-$4100, ZR2-$3670 using the website). The adder for the diesel on a colorado is $3730, according to my sticker. And no kidding there is a different between towing a brick and car, I really don't need to have the obvious pointed out to me. Nowhere did I state that he would get my average. Surely there would be a difference between an Airstream Basecamp and his Winnie, completely different areo.... "Come on, man...."

I have a 2016 4 cylinder gas model. I really like it even though it can't tow much without the v6 and tow package. I'm astonished at the mpg you get while not towing. I can get 26 mpg highway typically 24 combined. Would be nice to have the v6 especially if it gets the same or better mpg.

I drive a 2017 GMC Canyon with All Terrain trim so similar to your Colorado. I have pretty much the same likes and dislikes that you outlined. I'm into photography and put the 4x4 to use sometimes driving 20+ miles of dirt road to my location for wildlife or nightscape and then 20+ miles back. Dust in the bed is my biggest gripe with the truck even though I have a bed cover. Second biggest complaint is the transmission followed by the front air dam which is always dragging while driving off-road on rough terrain. For dash brightness, my truck has a dimmer dial next to the headlamp control. I turn it all the way down at night while sitting and waiting for dark enough. My truck is frequently confused as to sky brightness so I find that I use the dimmer dial a lot. (If the A-Pillar casts a shadow on the light sensor on a blue bird day the dash and radio displays dim and can disappear and the headlights come on.) I don't find my seat uncomfortable but I also don't spend as much time behind the wheel as you do.

I have a 2018 Canyon. I hate the headlights. The stock headlights are terrible driving in rain at night. Most of the time I have turned on the fog lights as well, as that seemed to help. Changed stock halogens for brighter white halogens and that was much better, but most likely will go led soon. Had the transmission shudder and had the transmission flush to fix and so far has stopped the shudder.

There should be a dial next to your headlight knob you can control the dash lights with. I had the 2016 2.8 duramax and loved the little truck. BUT it’s a little truck. I traded mine in for a 2022 ram 3500 dually.

The first thing I do when I'm looking at a new vehicle are the seats, if I'm not comfortable I don't buy it. I'm surprised that you have put up with uncomfortable seats with all the driving you do. May I suggest that you buy a Ford F-150. The Ford has very comfortable seats great acceleration, you will not be disappointed. Greetings from California.

Thank you for your review of your Colorado. I bought a Ford ranger in 2019 and considered the Colorado. Some of the same issues with the Ranger you have with Colorado but my seats seem very comfortable. What is your towing capacity? You don’t have to respond I can look it up. The range is 7500 pounds with a four-cylinder 270 hp 10 speed.

There should be a dimmer for lights. Next year a new model comes with the turbo 4 cylinder from the Silverado. I’d want 4 wheel drive but that’s just my preference.

I have 2018 Colorado and I was told by my dealer that it takes synthetic oil which I use to change it every 4.5-5k miles but… after resetting oil change after 1.5-2k miles of driving I see my oil usage at around 30-40% to be changed. I contacted Chevy dealer online that can be change only at the dealer. Any other make cars you can set your own oil mileage interval with exception to cars that need external diagnostics computer to do so. Only reset on this one

Thanks for the review, Robert. I'm deciding between a Colorado and a Tacoma to tow a nucamp 320 S, or to put a truck camper on. I've just seen a video pointing out that Chevy's manual says you can't put a truck camper (or anything similar) on the bed of a Colorado. If that isn't an option, I might go for the Tacoma.
@vap0rtranz
@vap0rtranz Жыл бұрын
The payload of the Colorado itself is low for doing a truck camper in its bed. Most truck campers are full 1/2 - 3/4 ton because they have the payload needed. You'd have more options by towing a camper instead of hauling it in the bed, whether Colorado or whatever truck.

I have the 2019 Canyon Off Road edition, the tires are noisy and take some getting used too but wear better than the road version I had on my 2015 Canyon, basically the same vehicle as the Colorado. I agree with all of your comments and specifically the bright dash lights in the eye when manually turning the headlights off. On the 2015 I had a thumb wheel to lower the dash light intensity but they did away with it on the 2019 (to save costs?). Another thing that drives me nuts 🥜 is the reminder that pops up every now and then on the infotainment screen that ‘all the infotainment can be dangerous while driving so (take your eyes off the road and) push this button so you can go to your normal screen’, apparently the government’s involved. Finally, I had to change a bulb in the third eye taillight array on the 2015 and there is a glue on gasket that needs to be replaced, I tried to avoid this and it leaked so I used silicone, so that 5 dollar bulb could become really expensive when you have to order a gasket too! Finally, I hope your dealership is more reputable than mine was at the sales end, however I got 🔥 when I traded the 2015 in, it came in $1900 under the Kelly Blue Book trade in value and was in very good condition with low mileage. That alone may cause me to go elsewhere and seek alternatives next time.

Ah, my 2017 still has the thumb dial to turn down the dash lights. That is the pits if all auto makers are doing away with this just to cut costs or enforce safety.

Great review! Oddly enough, searching for Chevy Colorado's pulling an RV on KZbin is how I discovered your channel and one of the reasons I bought one myself. I haven't had any issues out of mine except a "shimmy" in the transmission. 👍 I never activated my OnStar so they're not stalking me lol. I love the heated seats. Very comfortable ride after having a Toyota Tacoma. I have a lot more leg room now. I have the 2.8L Duramax diesel. It's quiet and very fuel efficient. It does cost more to maintain. Oil changes are over $100 at the Chevy dealership not to mention you have to change the fuel filters and DEF is an added expense.

Robert - Not sure if you have this on the Colorado, but what I hate on my car is the engine start-stop function. Very annoying! As for the seats, on your next vehicle make sure you get the most comfortable once out there. Especially, with the amount of driving you do.

We’ve had 3 GMC’s. The ‘99 Yukon was a Dream. Comfortable seats, etc… The newer 2019 Yukon seats are horrible. Poor lumbar, stiff, not enough padding. I think when cooling features installed on seats this is why they became so bad. Can’t pad them or that feature won’t work. I drive a 2002 Tahoe mostly for the great seat comfort. Agree the Onstar creeps me out. I want to disconnect too.

I went diesel back in 1999 with the new F250 Super Duty. After 20 years, I went back to gas (F150 w/5.0). Yeah, the new diesels make gobs of power, but with higher cost of diesel fuel + DEF and a lot of failures of DEF sensors, I would not buy another diesel truck.

Hi Robert, I also tow with my Colorado (a '17 diesel -- the 4banger diesel is quiet :) Many guys ask my how I got a diesel because nobody but a few knew GM offered it! My little 4banger diesel always gets 30 MPG when not towing, so the extra $ diesel washes out. Everyone says "You pay more for diesel." Um, yes but my MPGs are better so it Nets out with gas.) Anyways, I've got same color as yours :) Never had that AC issue. I do hate the headlights/taillights replacement. My main wiring harness did fail, and GM has a tech notice on it but no recall so I had to tell my service guy about the fix. If you keep your '19, you may want to inspect your main wiring harness for wear -- it runs from the computer on driver side, down wheel well, alongside the steps, back to the rear computer near the spare tire. When that wiring harness fails, the truck is undriveable. What do you think about windy days when towing? :) I do NOT like that it's a short bed, so on windy days I feel the camper back there. Weight distribution hitch makes towing slightly better but I still feel the camper moving around back there.
