Coming Home to Autism

Күн бұрын

It’s really scary when you find out that your child has Autism. What can I do? Where do I go? So I thought it would be helpful if talked about a few things that you can do after a diagnosis.
An autism diagnosis can be difficult to come to terms with. You may be coping with a condition you know very little about, and trying to find new ways for everyone to live together and feel supported. Many parents aren't given any guidance on what to do next. Moving on from a diagnosis can seem daunting, but we’re here to help. When a child receives a diagnosis of autism, Asperger syndrome, or other pervasive developmental disorders parents and family members may experience a range of feelings. These feelings can include grief, denial, anger, fear, and confusion. If you are a parent, you may feel or have felt these emotions.
This is important for autistic children, who can benefit from appropriate, sometimes intensive, support from an early age. It’s also important for families, who may benefit from services such as short breaks. A diagnosis can help your child to get autism-specific support, but this doesn’t happen automatically.

I’m 17 and autistic. Where the topic of autism was taboo at the time, my family still knew that I had some things going on with me. They did provide me with ABA therapy, speech therapy, physical therapy as a toddler and at school, I had special education services, more speech, and mainstream. I’m grateful that I have parents who learned to understand me, support me and get me the help I needed because otherwise, I wouldn’t be typing this comment right now. ❤

I am a parent of a newly diagnosed autistic child. I feel like I'm in a state of mourning. I have cried. I am stressed. In Africa, Kenya my country these conditions are shun upon. Therapies are expensive and specialists are few. And these are urban centers. Rural areas is far much worse. I am so afraid for my child and family in general. God help us. All you have suggested is great but it is of high cost here. I am trying to be strong. Never in my life did I ever think I will raise a special needs child. As of now I'm inconsolable. 😭😭😭😭

My princess is on the spectrum. Me and my husband took it very well. She is her own person and will learn her own way. All we can do is love her and get her as much support as we can. We never had any sad feelings towards it. We accepted it as soon as possible and kept it moving. She is the most loving the smartest little girl, and honestly we wouldn’t change it for anything. We love how she is and who she is. If anything she has made us change and be better people. I know it’s hard and difficult for everyone, because we deal with it our own way. But all I can say is parents love your children no matter what. They are our little blessings and it might be harder for some, but know they love us and we do what we can as best as we can. Keep at it, our kids deserve everything and more. Be strong but ask for help if u need it, cry if you need to it will all be ok, and never stop showing them love and how courageous mummy and daddy are.

Another amazing video with helpful tips. I could listen to you all day. I will just add that sometimes doctors in the UK are not very helpful so people can try ( for speech therapy referal, autism or not ) health visitors or even self referral. Also going private sometimes helps while awaiting for the NHS to take over as the waiting list can be so long depending on where one lives. Early intervention is key. Thank you again and keep them coming. I now feel part of your family 😊.

Thank you for this video it is so nice to hear what others went through and being able to relate to them. I loved your horse story! It made me giggle. I couldn't be more happy to have a child who sees the world with different eyes than the rest of us boring people :) I can't wait to see what he does in this world with his intelligence and love! I mean how freaking lucky am I that my son is this amazing special person. I have no doubt in my mind that he's going to do amazing things, he will feel things differently and it'll be my job to help him navigate that.. and I understand what it's like to be on the outside and considered weird.

I still mourn occasionally. I looked forward to conversations with my child. It is still a hard blow that my child doesn’t speak. agreed...when we noticed our child wasnt speaking only saying 1-3 words at 2 1/2 and i mentioned it to other friends/relatives... their usual comments were..."roll their eyes... when your child starts you wont get them to stop its gonna annoy you" ..to which i responded...it may annoy YOU but not me...the day my child says a few more words im going to be so overjoyed i may just cry...hes 3 now...they just told us yesterday he has a mild form of autism i became very sad but at least we know why he behaves how he behaves....the outside world wont understand what happens in your home with your child and thats ok you dont gotta explain it to anyone...definetly get your child into speech that will help a great deal....mine has been in speech for lik e4 months and now speaks like 10 new words...he repeats them often and gets excited when the chance presents itself for him to use his words ....having those animated conversations with your child helps their imagination...i never did that before with my kid but i noticed when i change my tone of voice and use high pitch sounds and pretend voices of little kids he is very interested and more likely to follow me and play together......it is important to learn from others many people have different but similar experiences with their autisic children ..ive watched many videos..in fact go on netflix and watch "dating on the spectrum" it is very interesting...all those poeple are autisic and are adults but so very intelligent...

It’s just 2 mins of crying then it stops. Lunch time I bring him home (feeding issues) and after lunch he is happy to go back to school. It’s just the morning time that he cries to get into. Tamana Aria I had the same concerns myself. But the best thing I ever did was put Dylan into a specialist nursery he was there for two years and then for reception he went to an autism base unit he was only there for a year and made such great progress we then moved him to a mainstream school with one-to-one support. My advice to you is get him into a specialist setting first and then he can transition into a mainstream school later. The trouble if you put into mainstream school now if he is struggling he may revert backwards where is getting him the help he needs every single day lace such a great foundation for him xox

My son is 20M old and I’m waiting for a diagnostic test. I know in my heart he has it. I’m scared, I’m confused, I blame myself. I’m disabled myself I use a wheelchair so I feel extremely overwhelmed. Do your autistic children enjoy life? Is it going to be ok?

I dont know if you already talked about this in your previous videos (you can link it to me if you did) but i want to ask, if you did any genetic test for your son, yourself, or your husband, before you decided to have another child. Just to come with some answer why he has autism. More than anything i would like to have one more child, so my boy can have friend for ever, but i m still in accepting phase that something is not right with him, we are still waiting for diagnosys, but he is already receiving speech t, and ot. I m so scared for his future and if he is ever going to be verbal, so i dont know how i would live if same thing happens if we decide to have one more baby. One more question- how old was your son when he started aba? We live in US, so we talk to some doctors that recommend as soon as possible, but some of them think its better after 3rd birthday :/ thank you for your time and answers, you have amazing family

I have decided not to change what I had planned to expose him to because he is autistic. If he doesn't like it then we look for something else he likes. Do you parent an autistic child differently?

I try not too but with all children its important to take their personalities in to consideration when parenting oxox

I appreciate these video my child has been diagnose with autism and have tried to bring him to therapist who teach motor skills for several months I don’t see any changes when we bring him back to the doctor who diagnose my child the doctor suggested we the parents should try interacting with our child more not bring him to the therapist it’s been a year now and we get frustrated see no changes my child now is turning 4 this year and we are concern that our child is not being able to interact with anyone. Hope you could be able to give us guidance in this matter?

The diagnosed are the lucky ones. Autism didn't used to exist, only bad behaviour or crazies and people unable to conform were misunderstood and punished.

ABA is horrible! I do not recommend it, and I actually encourage stimming. Stimming is how autistic people regulate emotions and it is essential for them.
