The fact that these people are addiction experts, or at least claim to be, is despicable. You NEVER offer someone who is 4 days into recovery their addiction. I have a family member who is 3 months sober from alcohol and we still have dry parties whenever we get together. She needs love, support, and help, not to be offered a glass of wine and say no.

You’re completely right. Absolutely absurd that they offered her icecream less than a week into recovery. Happy to hear your family is supportive of your loved one. I’ve been sober for 9 years and my family still has dry parties and dinners. My parents don’t drink at all (even when I’m not around) - to show support and solidarity . It’s been nearly a decade into solid recovery and they are still mindful and careful of my feelings- even though it is no longer necessary.

Yeah, i have an uncle who has tried to quit alcohol several times for the sake of his wife and kids but unfortunately he always gets reintroduced within a month. Ikr. It's like sending someone to a rehab facility for drug addiction and then a few days later offering them crack. Like how is that a good idea??? Mind you, drugs have withdrawal symptoms that ice cream likely doesn't, but still.

The lady who only ate french fries and nearly threw up from the carrot probably has Avoidant Restristive Food Intake Disorder which often results in a limited diet of mostly proccessed carbs. Adding other foods into the diet is part of treatment but you don't go stright from only french fries to a food that has a completely different taste and texture that the person finds repulsive. Of course she was going to throw up. It's likely most of the people in the show had some form of eating disorder, whether it be binge eating disorder, arfid, or pica.
@soldiaz7261
@soldiaz7261 Жыл бұрын
I have ARFID and 'outgrew' (read: was viciously bullied out of) PICA and I very much felt the same. Like, I've reacted like that to unsafe foods--it was constant before starting recovery, and it was even for things I wasn't eating, so no wonder she reacted that way. And I also compulsively ate vaseline and chapstick, not because I wasnt aware that was not good, but because I didn't have coping skills. This show is the entirely wrong way to treat anyone with an addiction (or eating disorder, which function like and can be considered addictions). It's hard to even watch clips and commentary on it.

@@Pugkin5405 stress is good. stress causes a reaction. Telling someone they're in danger is what I'm talking about. The girl that only eats fries has ARFID, Avoidant/Restrictive Food Intake Disorder. I also gag and even sometimes throw up when trying other foods (I'm also a fry addict I just don't ONLY eat fries, just my go-to when eating out). Our bodies just won't keep it down. She's not making it up, nor is she dramatizing it, it is just actually that bad for us.

7:40 What pisses me the hell off with this one 1: It is a complete waste of a stupid amount of a resource that could be given to others 2: Maple Syrup, in moderation, is actually quite healthy. It is high in antioxidants and offers nutrients like riboflavin, zinc, magnesium, calcium and potassium. It is also relatively low in calories. Basically, Maple Syrup isn't the issue at all. He isn't treating his body like a trash can for eating it. He is for eating as much as he does. 3: The analogy used used circular reasoning. Saying it is like treating himself as a trash can, but only because they had him out in in the trashcan to begin with. It is just circular logic and reasoning.

Man, I feel so bad for the ice cream lady. Not just cause of what led her to the addiction, but also how poorly they handled it. It's not super comparable, but I had a self harm addiction and it was hell. Had quite a few relapses even after years of being clean. It's not as common as running into a trigger for a food addiction, but there was so much work and emotional health problems that I had to deal with for that. Addictions are rough no matter what it is and most addicts know well enough what it's like and how bad it is. Like most of the time, addicts don't need to be made aware of how much they intake or how bad it is or that they "treat their body like trash." Even she said she wanted to get better. It's one thing to just stop, but you not only have to find other and healthier coping mechanisms, but also you have to get to the root. That's why drug addicts and alcoholics often relapse. It's very situational things that lead to those and most of the help doesn't really work for long term things because they may not be getting the help they need. Such as poverty and low income being a big factor that contributes to addiction, as well as the addictive elements like nicotine. Actual addictions require more. A real world test for her would have been grocery shopping since it's a regular activity. Just a reminder for anyone struggling, addictions are tough especially if not provided adequate solutions to the problems that lead to addiction and not given proper help/treatment. If you do relapse, that happens and it can be hard to cope with the feelings, but you can do it again and you aren't lesser or broken or defeated for it. I believe in you all ^v^ For those that have broken addictions and are clean, I am SO PROUD OF YOU!!! And same to those that are working hard!!! I'm proud of anyone no matter where they are with their addiction!!! You are worthy of love and treatment and care!!! 💜💜💜 Edit: My addiction isn't one naturally run into, but even I get tempted when it comes to alcohol. Thanks to trauma, personality disorders, all that stuff, I am at risk of addiction and I know it cause I've had a craving for it in my reckless episodes before, I just don't physically have access to it and I'm incompetent with how to get it. Just seeing people enjoy alcohol can make me extremely anxious and uncomfortable because I know how dangerous it can be for someone like me. I have to be careful. But to have someone that is recovering already from having an addiction and to offer them the addiction is GROSS GROSS GROSS!!!!! I get uncomfortable just being around people drinking cause of pressure and cravings and urges thanks to impulsive/reckless behaviour and self-destructive tendencies where I find a strong urge/desire to ruin myself in response to trauma and such. Let alone if I was actually addicted to it and trying to recover and being offered it. Like I still have to manage my self harm addiction even though I am clean for years now and don't rely on it. Because triggering imagery or mentions of certain words (like the word c*t, censored for my benefit, can be enough to trigger me even if it's about vegetables and not self harm) can have me feeling incredibly anxious and having to distract myself to resist it. It's so messed up to offer her it as a "real world" test. Exposure to things in a therapy sense does NOT work like that either! Edit 2: I'm autistic and have AFRID (selective eating disorder) and uh, yeah, I have almost thrown up from things too. I struggle with foods that have strong tastes too. Even if I liked grilled cheese, I've almost gotten sick eating it. I've expanded my list of safe foods thankfully so I'm having actual meals (especially since I was neglected and my parents couldn't handle an autistic kid with needs), but it can take a while. I have struggled through foods just for the sake of other people. It's really hard to live with especially since I've had anorexia before and a lot of insecurities around food and eating too thanks to abuse and neglect and weight issues. Especially getting labelled as a "picky eater" when really it was a legitimate eating disorder that is common with autistic and adhd folks. I've mostly expandes my safe foods because a lot of previous safe foods (unhealthy ones) would trigger my IBS and gastrointestinal issues and out of sake for not suffering, I had to do something plus the toll it took on my self esteem as I gained weight (unrelated, still not fully understood, probably related to my PCOS.) So I get it. A carrot for her could be extremely repulsive. Even though I "like" broccoli or can tolerate it, I literally ate it tonight in tiny nibbles because I can't handle actual bites of strong foods. It's a real thing and it can majorly suck when it comes to health issues. Like, again, the only reason I expanded it was for self esteem and not having to suffer through stomach problems that genuinely had me crying and contemplating suicide bc im a highly unstable invidivual. It was literally out of one thing being worse than the other. But that's basically my rant. A lot of my expanded safe foods is also thanks to my friend's family cooking good food. My parents don't really do that outside of dishes they like (which don't interest me or make me sick) and then they just go "oh well" to me. So. Thank you friend's family. But this is basically just an autistic ramble that yeah, that kind of thing is real and it can be different for everyone. I'm happy with my diet today, but still feel insecurities about not "eating normal" like other people do.
