So yes keeping a child “check in” is possible, it’s what the parents are willing to do to make them that way. That is what’s wrong with so many of the youth these days, parents give in to their child(ren), letting them get away with their awful behaviors and even rewarding it and now we have the youth we have, disrespectful , irresponsible, unreliable, and selfish children that thinks the world owes them something just for them “being them”. This is when you start looking for someone else in the family. Hopefully cousins etc who will honor love and cherish this item. My husband and I are in the middle of that His children will receive nothing from his families inheritance. No pieces of memorabilia etc. They have allowed their mother who refused to let him see his children for 14 years for no other reason other than they couldn't lie enough for her yet she destroyed all the truth that existed on the father's side lying to them about the child support medical dental etc denying that it even existed. They still side with their mother won't even let their father speak to them so we realize it would be foolish to give them things from his parents and grandparents. Since I had no children there is no one to inherit the heirlooms I inherited but luckily on my family's side my father has a wonderful family who will treasure the things I will be returning. They passed them around throughout the family at reunions and people go home and bring them back years later things don't go out of the family they stay within.

Keeping a valuable heirloom in the attic bad part of the story but a lot of people do that. As a personal property appraiser yeah like antiques roadshow but I went to college for it I hate to tell you how many times we find valuable things in the worst places. A lot of jewelry coins etc just end up out in the trash because people don't know what they're looking at when they're cleaning out boxes and boxes of stuff that got sent to them or they took when someone died and never were looked at since it was packed up a century before. Although the internet has changed many things and people now know to look between the pages of books etc. It still happens. I know a friend who inherited her father's tribes wampum belts. Yeah, he was a Chief's son the last living chief & he didn't go back to where he comes from in the east. He didn't want to take over the tribe because he fell in love with a California girl during World War II and stayed in California. The tribe didn't know what to do because the items had always been handed down In the Chiefs family so they sent them out to her dad when the old chief died. Unfortunately When he died his family put the wampum belts in a closet! Wampum belts were literally the story of the tribes history being extended over time. There are people who spend their whole lives learning how to decipher these especially many people who went back to the tribes and got them to show what symbols meant. They are extremely valuable. These were just sitting in a closet so that a house cleaner was able to steal & sell them on the black market. My girlfriend said well we didn't know how important they were at the time. Oh yes you did. You just didn't care because it was your dad's past and he didn't show you that you should respect it. He wanted to be modern & European that's why he married a European woman and raised his children so they knew nothing about their past. He destroyed the history of his people. He should have never kept them. He should have sent them back or gave them to the local university for safety. Now they are in the hands of a private collector.

That must be an incredibly painful experience to witness, especially during such a significant milestone for your daughter. It sounds like there may be unresolved feelings and tensions surrounding your family dynamics. It’s crucial to prioritize open communication with your daughter to express how her choice affects you, while also trying to understand her perspective. Navigating this situation with empathy on both sides might help mend some of the rifts

Think the family spoiled Zoe in a way they didn't realize making her feel like she was the perfect child. Also the girlfriend has manipulated Zoe exactly where she wants her making Zoe look like the piece of crap. When really the girlfriend's the one who's bad but I'm sure Zoe doesn't understand. Her father is the worst of them all because he's allowed all of this to go on because he's never wanted to be responsible and he had life-handed to him. When you give your business to your child it usually goes very bad They are usually spoiled rotten etc. It enthuses me when I see people as in my line of work I have to who their parent who started the company made the kids start out at the bottom and work their way up to be able to get the position they have those companies thrive progress and become the best The rest burn on the trash heap of nepotism. Children very often get manipulated by the type of mistress the woman is. Someone who hides within your own walls in your family and sleeps with your husband or wife doesn't look like an enemy to the kid. They look like you somehow failed in the relationship & oh poor parent they had to turn to someone else for solace. Zoe has always been manipulated very well. We have no idea how Stan and the mistress girlfriend now new mother manipulated Zoe when she lived at home with them all week long and only saw her mother on the weekends. Especially when you see that the girlfriend tried to make Mark feel guilty about not paying for Zoe's college but then right away oh I don't have that kind of money. No she married it. She stole it from the mother & from the grandfather by taking his son away from his marriage. Sounds like Zoe needed a wake up call as to what it takes to survive without extremely financially wealthy parents and support from them. The best people I've ever met working with have always been those who started with nothing and became something all on their own. It has amazed me throughout my lifetime would I have learned and the sadness people bring to themselves simply to their greed avarice nepotism and simply too big of an ego. Zoe was raised to think she was the perfect child the mother did not remarry or have other children. She never had to share thus expected that it would keep on going on for the rest of her life. Life isn't that easy.

The one issue I take with this is to point out that to Zoe that woman is not "her father's mistress" but rather her stepmother. That's not an excuse to be hurtful, but it's unrealistic for OP to assume Zoe will have no relationship with her. It seems like at least part of this drama is the fact that OP is upset that her daughter doesn't share her own bitterness about the breakdown of OP's marriage.
