My Decision on the Ensley Reign Controversy

Today I will be using a full face of a cancelled indie makeup brand as I process my final thoughts and come to a decision on what I'm choosing to do regarding Ensley Reign. Thank you so much for your feedback and participation in the initial ER video. Your feedback and ideas were invaluable in this process for me. I felt like you were all so open minded. I'm sorry to anyone my decision might hurt. It was not easy for me to decide on this. I apologize for how lengthy and emotional this video is. I don't really expect anyone to watch this. The truth is I needed to do this video because I was going out of my mind and the only thing I knew to do about it was create content. The last two days has been pretty hard on me and it shows in this video, but I felt I owed it to you guys to follow up on this topic and tell you all the thoughts that influenced it. It was the least I could do after all the thought you guys put in.

First off I love ur videos I just hav somethings to say, sorry about the length in advance. As u are, Im also a very strong believer in community building. I hope that u and the non-queer ppl in ur comment section (especially the couple saying they dont care and will support ER regardless) will read this. Iv always thought that it is somewhat the job of ppl less affected by bigotry, racism, etc to help act as that bridge u speak of in order to protect those that r in active danger of the violence that is inherent in the rhetoric that ER currently aligns themselves with. So overall I respect ur decision. I won't watch any dedicated videos to ER or buy from them anymore because as a queer POC I refuse to fund violence against myself or others I love. I also think that u and anyone else watching/reading this should look into how inherently racist and misogynistic transphobic rhetoric is, especially towards black and brown women. Its an eye opening discovery and I hope some of the ppl in ur comment section saying that they flat out don't care and will blindly continue to support ER will make more informed decisions knowing the true scope of ppl transphobia is violent towards. I hope these ppl remember that we can't b in community with eachother if we ignore eachothers concerns for safety and acceptance, that that is not a healthy community and I know thats not the one ur trying to cultivate. So I find those comments of not caring wat ER did a little disturbing. I think it also should b pointed out that we can leave space for the person behind ER to grow and still not support their brand. I understand the sentiment of not abandoning ppl and giving them opportunities to b better but I also think in order for that to happen there must b consequences for their actions, just like u making the final decision to fully start ur recovery journey due to seeing the accumulated consequences of your actions. I think there should b consequences for engaging in the violent behavior that they decided to engage in and that the ONLY ppl that can TRULY accept any apologies from ER are the trans ppl in our makeup community. The rest of us should just b here holding eachother and ER accountable so that we can create a safe and enjoyable community for everyone. No canceling, just holding ourselves and the ppl we r in community with accountable for their actions, because that is whats important for this to be a safe space/community for everyone; especially the most marginalized.

The holocaust started with dehumanizing ideas/rhetoric, the slave trade started with dehumanizing ideas/rhetoric and I think we can both agree lead directly to disgustingly violent action that hav left the planet and its ppl irreparably changed and damaged. The whole point of saying dehumanizing rhetoric isn't actual violence is to lul us into a false sense of security that words are only words and ideas are only ideas and cant be violent, until its too late and the violence is at ur, ur loved ones and the community u care abouts doorstep. This whole thing reminds me of being back in high school and hearing people say shit like” if you’re gonna be friends with them, then I’m not gonna be friends with you” …. If you get upset at people for not understanding something and just turn them away and block them from your lives you end up becoming just like them for the exact reason that you didn’t want to be around them in the first place.

I bet there are so many brands, probably thousands we give our money to that support things we don't agree with, the only difference is that they haven't gotten caught. Thank you so much for being so open and vulnerable with us. I got misty-eyed a few times hearing how much you have come through. Much love. I have not watched your whole video yet but I was struck by you talking about being a tomboy and feeling like getting in to makeup was like you were coming out. I myself was a tomboy growing up and did not get in to makeup until my late 30s and felt almost ashamed of it at first because I was so against the vanity and “fake” beauty. People would complement my eyeshadow and I wouldn’t know what to say I was so embarrassed. I realized over time that for me make was a new medium of art and that I wasn’t doing it (only) to look “pretty” but as an expression of my inner emotions and creativity. Once I realized that I wasn’t doing fully able to embrace it. And OH MY GOD can I relate to not fitting in to any box and just feeling gutted by all of the division in our culture. 🩵 Seriously wish I could give you a hug after watching this all the way through. I have been clean 8 years and 2 of the things that really helped ME was makeup and music! You told it so well for me lol so thank you! We all have a right to our feelings. I don’t know ER personally, I only know her as a brand. I have 4 of her palettes. I was a bit disturbed by what I consider her lack of ethics when I found out that her affiliate accounts are not paid with cash but with store credit. Not only are you getting free advertisement from the creator but you then have them basically assuring yourself that they will get another item they can advertise for you. Then there was the AI which they said they were not going to use forward but continued doing so. Then this. I am an educator and I am incredibly sick and tired of certain people always talking about schools grooming kids. And I am terribly offended when a brand follows and likes that kind of sites because in some way it is an attack against me. At schools we are busy teaching curriculum, not discussing sex with children, and spreading lies like that is despicable. I like her product but I am not emotionally involved with it. Plenty of brands that I enjoy and that can be proud to support. That said I think people can buy from whoever they want. I’m not sure I understand your logic but it really doesn’t matter. Cancel cancel culture? We all have the right to spend our money wherever we like and to be around people we respect. I don’t respect ER at this point, I don’t w@nt to give her my money. I also think people don’t change their core belief system. They can lie and say they are sorry, they didn’t mean it, up to each one of us to believe or not. The trans population is one percent and the time spent during this last election on anti trans ads was totally disproportionate and they were full of outright lies. But as I said, we must all do what feels right to us.

Damn, there’s so much here. Thanks for taking the time write all this out. I appreciate you. So, I’m an affiliate for ER. And I don’t get PR from her. So, the system she has in place has actually helped me to get products to film for you guys. I haven’t minded it. I guess I didn’t really think about it the way you have presented it here, because I just like filming with the shit I love. I can’t fake excitement, so it worked for me. ER actually has a $5000 threshhold. Once you have made $5000 in sales your affiliate payout changes to cash. Coincidentally (I don’t actually believe in coincidence) I just hit that threshhold, but I didn’t find out about it until all this happened. She must have been going thru- cleaning out all her PR accounts of people who told her to take her off the list and saw that I was a couple hundred bucks over $5000. I didn’t even know there was threshold until I just was told. It also has kept me pretty honest. Not that I needed that, but it’s nice to know that if anyone thinks I’m gushing over the formula because I have an affiliate link and discount code, that I can just say that I don’t even really get money for that account. Not that anyone ever doubts me. I try to keep it real. This whole situation has been a great opportunity for me to get more educated about the AI thing. Although, it hasn’t really changed my opinion except that now I see even more hypocrisy. Content creators use AI for their content creation, their copy, their thumbnails, their titles. Even their content ideas. It’s all plagiarized. So, there’s that. My daughter is in school and I don’t know what I would do without those teachers. I have loved all of her teachers and they have really helped me fill in the gaps as a single mom. I’m not shit without those teachers. And I know teachers aren’t running around teaching kids about sex-except what they feel is necessary to keep them safe. Finally, I know for a fact that people can change their core beliefs. Because I’ve changed so many of mine. It just takes years. But sometimes a painful experience can be like a nuclear blast for the process of change. I’m pretty sure most people DONT change their core beliefs. But we are all capable. We just need the right motivation in perfect timing with new information that can replace the old, painful information when it’s no longer working for us.

Oh, and the cancel culture thing. I’m not trying to cancel cancel culture. I’m merely trying to stand for myself against it and not let it push me around in the only way I can. I’m not going to doing something that I don’t think is right just because 20,000 people on the internet are going to berate me and virtually try to beat me down. I’m not sure that they are. I’m not that important. But it’s gotten really difficult to just have your own stance on something if it goes against the social norms. Same old fight, new playing field against a massive opponent.

I just want to say I love your mindset and I know it took you a long time/agony to get to where you are. I admire you so much, you are very strong to be able to look at your demons and to encourage others to look at theirs. I actually got it from a poem by Viggo Mortensen called Ten Last Night: I pass a pile of broken chairs On our street corner And feel you Dying on me. I taste the blood That shimmered On your lips Lingering, like guilt does. Thank you. It actually took me about 8 years to get my degree. I had almost 3 years clean my first try and relapsed while in my second year. So, when I got out I took my time going back to finish cuz I was scared the pressure was going to be too much in my early recovery the second time. I hope my Prince Charming does come. I just had to stop because you just said dont demolish the bridge.... I added a comment to one I read earlier in the video about neutrals being the bridge whether in discussions or even makeup, we are necessary. It just stopped me in my tracks hearing you just say it too. I adore your raw realness and believing in people. My sister is married to a Pastor and I've never felt judged by them. In fact her husband even complicated a crazy makeup pic I posted on IG wearing a custom crocheted cat hat she made me that I sent to them. In their case sometimes the labels just dont fit the real person because our family is diverse, crazy, and accepting. Your video really made me think how quick people are to cancel over a decision that could have just been made without much thought by the brand & not necessarily something she believes in. I think at 50 I could do something that ignorant without realizing it and thats kinda scary since I truly love people but not necessarily their bad behaviors. I would have to say if one of my best friends ever asked my politics by her own posts she would unfriend me forever which makes me sad to feel I have to hide that when we could be discussing & learning from each other instead. I dont even know what that type of alienation would be called but its hurtful. Just yesterday she said she was priming me breathing protection disposable masks because I had a horrible breathing exacerbation that landed me in the ER New Years day. It had been building for almost 2 months. I said how sweet it was of her. She mentioned she was being selfish because she loved me as a friend and wanted to keep me alive. I'll just never discuss politics with her 😂😢😢. I always love hearing opinions about things to see if its something I would realign with. You have to stay open to learn. As far as boyfriends lol you dont need one, maybe just a lifelong bf with benefits. If I could hook you up I would but the best thing, I mean the only thing, that guy has going on is his "mom" and I'm fabulous 😂. He's probably too you for you but he's up for grabs if you know anyone who can slap the shit out of him back to reality. I was actually awake when you wrote this last night. We were having a sleepless night together. I didn’t respond because I needed to go back to sleep and I knew for a fact I wouldn’t if I would have engaged in responding to this. What I thought was, “wow. sandy really went all out in this.” I figure it really just inspired you in the right moment. I love that this video did that for you. It makes me think I musta done something right. I love the part that says, “something I would realign with.” I relate to that so hard. I’m constantly searching for something to realign with. I could tell you put a lot of yourself out into these videos. While I usually try to keep it short and sweet this video dictated a more in depth though out response. I'm glad you made sure to get your rest first though. I'm on prednisone right now for my breathing / oxygen issue and it contributed to my being up all night heavily and again tonight. People don't grow without mistakes and it's society's job to give input as we have done and guide them. From there they make their choice & we will all see it. I would not be alive today I'm sure if I found that addiction because there is fentanyl in everything... I still smoke a lot of weed though, so I'm not "clean". But I'm okay with that.

I personally have never had a problem with AI art, and yes I know I'm going to get a lot of hate for this opinion, but it's how I feel about the subject. No one's going to change my mind on that subject. I've listened to both sides. ER has decided on a specific esthetic for her brand and she gets it using AI. And personally I don't care what she uses to decorate her palettes. No one goes up in arms over a brand using just a pattern, I'll bet they didn't "pay" an artist for just using a pattern, like using vines or flowers, or lace. Again my opinion. Someone getting offended by my opinion is on them. That's their choice. Whether I choose to purchase additional ER palettes will be determined by price and color story. I do wish she would not have used her company Instagram for her political ideology but it is what it is. I'm sure if you dig deep enough into any company you will find things that do not align with your personal beliefs. And while others may have to time to do so I do not nor do i want to. Taking a screenshot of a like from any particular post on any social media and then scaremongering the masses is in my opinion wrong and because of who I am I am the type that will do the exact opposite of what is wanted, hence why most surveys/tests will say I'm an anarchist. I don't go with the flow. I refuse to be bullied and tend to stick up for those who are bullied, and that's what's happening right now to ER, and I hate that shit. Sorry I but I can make a sailor blush with my foul language. Will I show ER on my channel, probably. Will I show case it, don't know. Hopefully I can continue to have conversations with you. I know I'm not everyone's cup of tea and I'm perfectly fine with that. I'm conservative. I'm an anarchist, and I'm liberal, it depends on what we are talking about. Government spending tax dollars, extremely conservative, government control, exreme anarchist, personal issues once an legal adult, and yes I said once a legal adult, very liberal. Etc.” But then the response I’ve gotten for these two videos has been remarkable. You guys have actually amazed me. Sorry it was so long. But I couldn’t cut any of it. It just was what it was.
