I have a weird cupboard like yours. I'd put things in there, determined to remember what was there and a month later I wouldn't have a clue. So I actually typed up and printed out exactly what was in the secret spots. I stuck this on the inside of the cupboard door, and it's worked fantastically ever since.

It’s always a process. Minimalism isn’t a final destination. Your life and needs are always changing. I listen to The Minimalists and have played their month long minimalism game five times now. (Following their process you get rid of 496 items in a 31 day month) This last time I didn’t think I would manage it and was struggling after 100 items. At some point I got in the zone, looked at things differently and ended up getting rid of 927 items in July! 🐞
@somade18044 жыл бұрын
Didn’t count exactly how many items we did in whole of July, but decluttered all extra furniture and also the contents of the extra furniture. Sold several items in the secondhand market and finally bought some house plants with the money made from the sales. The first month in a very long time that we didn’t buy any clothing items☺️

I don’t think that once you declutter, you’re ever done. Being a minimalist means that you are always reorganizing and reevaluating your home and life. A helpful tip is to pick a spot to revisit each month. For example, an office, a playroom, closets... if you SCHEDULE the tasks into your life, you won’t ever feel overwhelmed after the initial declutter if that makes sense.
@NatalieBennett4 жыл бұрын
I agree! I pick a spot or two every week!

Biiiggg recommendation for your spice cabinet: Buy a ton of spice bottles that you like, all the same size, working for your spice cabinet and can label. Maybe the even stackable bottles (they don’t have to be big). Andd maybe a lazy suzan or big basket at the back with extra/dubbles (or in your pantry). only pulling them out when refilling. I have this system in my kitchen and it works super nicely! It makes the space in my kitchen so much better visual! Sooo Worth the money spend on the spice bottles.
@Stevie374 жыл бұрын
We got a spice organizer with pullout drawers and slots for bottles to lie down in. It came with a bunch of matching glass bottles and labels. Instead of putting the labels on the bottles themselves, I put them on the front lip of the shelf based on which slot that spice is kept in. I'm so glad we got it, I've been super happy with it.

One of the things I'm proudest of in my life is my spice organization. I got some 2 & 4 oz plastic jars off Amazon (previous iteration used metal, but those kept rusting) and glued some magnets on the bottom, and stuck to the side of my fridge. But I've seen people put metal strips (knife strip style) on the side of cabinets, on walls, or really anywhere. I buy my spices in small units from a local spice shop, so this works well for me.

🐞 I really love your re-declutter/revisiting type videos, because that’s where I always end up getting frustrated. I would declutter my closet (or my bed that sometimes doubles as a second closet 😳) and then two months later everything would be a mess again. For some reason it had never occurred to me to try a different way of organizing my stuff instead of just putting everything back into the same system that clearly wasn’t working for me 😂 😂.
@iknitb4itwaship334 жыл бұрын
I agree with the Lazy Susan idea. I would add that a two tier lazy Susan is your best bet. Part of your frustration is that your shelves in your cabinet do not adjust. If you have a detail saw that allows you to cut the shelf out, that would allow you some flexibility when you go back and add holes for shelf brackets to put them where the shelf works best for you. Another idea is to group together the jars that are the same size, or find an organization system that have all the same container for each spice.

Natalie Bennett, I have kitchen cabinets shaped like that too. I took a rack like that black one you have on the shelf just above your spices, and slid one back in that corner (to the left on the spice shelf) for starters. After I did that, everything just kind of fell into place in a good way. I ended up with so much more functional space after simply doing that. Maybe you can end up fitting 2 small spice bins (stacked one above the other bc of wire tier/shelf) that can slide easily in and out... just a thought. I put one of those wire shelf inserts in about 6 different cupboards. Life has been so much better in my kitchen space since then.

I had a similar problem with my spices and finally solved it recently by getting one single round and one double layer round Lazy Susan. I think it would work for you as well, because even if the Lazy Susan is pushed mostly back into that deep cupboard, You can always just spin it around to the side that is reachable. Also, my cabinet space is not high enough for a double layer either, but the double Lazy Susan just has the shorter spices on top which do fit. It is surprising how many things can fit on a relatively small (10-11 in) Lazy Susan.

What you really need to consider for your spices is a spice drawer. I have something similar to this from Amazon, Lynk Professional Adjustable Expandable 4 Tier Steel Spice Rack Tray Drawer Organizer, Insert, Silver Metallic, that my father in law handmade for me. It has been my saving grace. I find this works best for me and our kitchen layout. I think we all have an odd shaped cabinet like the one you have for your spices. Mine lives next to my sink, and I use that odd cabinet for my cookbooks, paper products (plates, napkins, silverware), and vases. They are items I don't reach for all the time. Hope you find a solution that works best for you and your space. Great videos, love your content, keep it up.

I considered trying that spice organizer that you are returning, but we buy our spices in the really large containers, so I would need to buy empty spice jars and fill/refill, etc. Which would look incredibly tidy! But I decided I didn't want to make more work for myself, and then need to store the refills/leftover somewhere else. Essentially doubling our spice storage. (rolls eyes.) We cook with a lot of different spices. So - I haven't found a good solution yet either! It takes a lot of shuffling things around and memory!

🐞 de cluttering is a constant chore that we need to continue at it. That is a challenging cabinet! Hopefully that new system works. I would put a battery operated push light for the back. It’s a cabinet that needs constant attention. What works for me is to put a rubber/silicone mat in a drawer close to the stove with small glass spice bottles. I buy the small species bags to refill my glass bottles. I think buying smaller sizes I will use more of it and stay fresher than buying big bottles. My husband and I de cluttered our garage and organize it well. After 2 weeks it was messy again with the kids bringing out their items and toys. Nice jewelry organizer! That dresser is working out well for you. I like to see neat drawers. Maybe you can put a butterfly clip on the IKEA organizers to hold together. So far, the only way I've been able to organize spices is by going seriously minimalist with them. Less TO organize. There are always a ton of spices that get used once....and then that's it. I try to decide if the recipe really truly needs that spice. My grandmother's cooking was amazing and she only used salt and pepper. (plus baking soda, etc for baking) I keep thinking that I'm making my spice cabinet too involved. :-)

Super excited for the fall decor video. My husband and I just moved into our first home a few months back and I’m trying to not buy too many decor items. I love your style so I’m excited to see what you keep vs what you don’t.

Great series! I appreciate that you keep it real-decluttering and organizing is a continual process. I feel your pain with the spice cabinet! :)

Omg yes! I have the spice shelf and I LOVE mine! I think it depends on the type of cabinet you have. I have a tall narrow cabinet so it worked well for me. 😊❤️👏🏽

🐞 I have loved this series, I am still decluttering after doing almost every room. I still have a long way to go.
