My Defective Typhoon H - Overview and Result

As quick as it landed it is headed back, sadly.
I just posted the calibration video earlier today was excited to get my new Typhoon up in the air and sadly it looks like I have a defective unit!
Something is defective with either the GPS or the Compass or both that resulted in a couple crashes and a new drone that I cannot fly due to safety issues.
I contacted Yuneec support on this and they were quick and very helpful, ultimately I have decided to return to BH Photo (who is incredible!) and look to get another Typhoon to continue with.
Unfortunately this is going to delay my Typhoon series a bit, overall it looks like a great piece of equipment, I do think mine is probably just one that had something wrong with it.

Thanks for the insight. I know I asked to give a good overview of the Typhoon H .... I have ordered the P4 since you put your video up. I have gathered all the info off yourself and the net and decided for photography the P4 is the better set up. I still will be following your channel with interest and when the P4 gets delivered today I think I will carry out an unbox and first flight in one video to show how easy it will be. Hopefully. I just picked one of these up. Only flown twice so far but thankfully none of the issues you had. One think that has thrown me off a bit is how to get started. I was pretty hesitant as I didn't feel there was a good starting check list. I haven't calibrated a thing, I literally charged it and let it fly. Working good so far like I said but I am struggling a little bit with dialing in if even needed. I am staring to go through there videos but I wish there was one for getting started...

I forgot I did do one key thing, I updated the firmware on both the controller and hex. I think a video flagged me to do that or maybe it was the support website. That may have helped me start off well. Note on the looks - it's so sinister looking IMO (which I love). I'm worried that it will become self-aware and abduct me or something....

The duel compass and IMU parts on the P 4 will make many of the behaviors provided on the Typhoon a thing of the past.

what you experience is called toilet bowling. for those that may see my comment. always calibrate with each battery swap. I do this religiously with my Inspire. with any drone that has a GPS as soon as you lift off into the air only go about 2 to 3 feet high and let it sit there for a minute or so to see if it starts to toilet bowl. If it does go ahead and bring it straight down restart recalibrate. Before I even leave the ground I give the Drone a few minutes to receive all the data from the satellites. I'm very sorry to hear what happened to you but looks like you have things taken care of. good for you. Keep the videos coming they're great.

It wasn't a calibration issue, I calibrate with each flight (unless in near a source that will interfere with). Good tip though -

I use a "TeslaMeter". If you have an iPhone, look for the free app called "Multi Measures 2"

Thanks Bill...great job as always on the video. So where do you currently stand with the Typhoon H in general? Will you get another? I've gotten rid of my Phantom 3 (after 2 crashes...one my fault), and currently considering Phantom 4 and Typhoon H. I like the idea of the Hexacopter redundancy w 6 rotors, but the P4 seems to have superior video. The new typhoon H Realsense is supposedly coming out end of July (MSRP $1900)- THAT looks amazing. I wonder if they fix camera quality issues though. Just wondering if you've made any decisions yet on the Typhoon H overall. Thanks again!

Awesome! Don't know when you made your last video on it but it seems like a pretty quick turn around. Best Buy just dropped their price on the 3DR SOLO w/Gimbal to $600 so I placed an order yesterday and am supposed to pick it up Friday. That should still leave me some time to cancel. I really wanted to get the Typhoon H but lately have been reading about to many issues with the camera quality, among other things. I wrote off DJI only because of all the terrible comments regarding their poor customer service. From reading through all the different user forums it appears ALL of the top 3 (DJI, 3DR and Typhoon H) are having quality control issues. I feel like I had to pick the lessor of the 3 evils. The $600 deal was what pushed me to 'pull the trigger' on the 3DR. The only thing that raises a question for me about the 3DR is WHY did the price suddenly drop so much? I hope Best Buy isn't dumping their inventory because they know something we don't (like maybe 3DR is going out of business or something). I couldn't justify the ~$1,000 delta just to get retractable landing gear and a 360 rotating camera and I'm not into R/C flying and just want to record some quality aerial video. BOTTOM LINE: Still looking forward to seeing your next review and some video from your 'new' H.

You may want to read up on 3DR - based on all available evidence they have no factory and no production. You are effectively buying a closeout, IMHO - and the price at the discount with camera is the same as a Phantom 3 Pro. Your money.... Oh, and they don't even have phone support any longer at all. Chat and email only. 3DR went through 100 million of investors money and have almost nothing to show of it. What is left of the company (they got rid of 80% plus of their employees and contractors) is trying to get into the "enterprise" market selling mostly software subscriptions. This was confirmed by their CEO - that is, that they were beat down in the consumer market and cannot compete.

I got some troubles during flight before do the hard reset had "compass warning" almost immediately take off the H. I did and get better now, but not enough landing gear don't respond and have till some compass warning till. I am very disappointment about Yuneec and Typhon H. From the beginning I got troubles and crash twice. I try to get my money back and they said NOT. I bought this stuff in Germany. What can I do? I am from Venezuela

Ian - What kind of issues are you having? Couple things * Smart flight mode - It isn't incredibly intuitive, if you are using it read the instructions and make sure you have distilled what it does to flight controls * Negative comments on here, I believe my experience was just a faulty unit, I will have a better grip once I open the new one. regardless, use it and just use your experience to drive your decision. There are a ton of people on here that strongly dislike DJI, or Yuneec or Autel. I am trying to give my honest assessment and not make any rash assumptions. Let us know what you are experiencing, maybe someone did as well that can help you.

I'm curious once you noticed it was drifting.... Why did you push through and continue flying? I know you mentioned landing and doing the GPS calibration however if I'm understanding you correctly even after you did the GPS calibration (no mention of compass calibration) it was still drifting... So why push through and continue the flight?

It was a different flight, had been working with Yuneec support, was in an open area where no one was around. Was getting an inventory of the issue and all details I could to try and resolve.

That is called the Toilet Bowl effect, it defiantly is a calibration issue, I heard it has to do with the declination of the GPS antenna, I have notice this in many other videos on KZbin. I received my H yesterday from B&H and the box came looking like it was opened before I got it. After all my work setting it up and reading the directions I went to do a dry start up with the props off and after I started the motors it started screeching in pain and a warning signal popped up on the controller display saying "motor failure, land immediately". I'm expecting a new one today, if this one isn't perfect, I'm sending right back to B&H and exchange it for another Phantom, I really hope Yuneec is listening to both of us.

+BillNicholsTV after the second one came with a defective arm lock, I decided to return . The final nail In Yuneec's coffin was that their batteries also went from $84.00 to $140.00 overnight. The lower cost of batteries was one of the main reason I had considered buy an H to begin with, but that was the final straw. I ended up buying another DJI Phantom 3 Professional, for $1075.00 it came with an extra battery and a DJI backpack. I have a ton of these batteries too, and new replacements are only $115.00 now. I also got for a couple of bucks above what I originally spent on the H a DJI Osmo. You really do get what you pay for and In the end DJI provided the most value and quality. Good luck with yours, but I would suggest you rethink it. Happy flying!

HI William - The Typhoon is now the most economical, hexacopter and one of the most interesting platforms outside of DJI. With Intel real sense (still to be seen) - The Inspire and larger models are really for a different audience. I have a large quadcopter that I will probably do a video on later but right now I am focusing on what is more mainstream and affordable for a larger audience. With that, I have reached out to DJI and Yuneeq about evaluating their larger platforms from a pro photographer perspective.

I had the metal clip that holds the arms up break on my typhoon h the first week I had it. Sent it Yuneec and they are fixing it for free. Need a better metal clip in the arms

Customers should consider that there have been very few improvements to the other Yuneec stuff over the years - so although it would be great with updates and improvements, this could be wishful thinking. Yuneec, according to many, is unwilling to listen and to communicate in a serious fashion. They cut and paste their consumer responses instead of having an engineer say "we found this and we are fixing it like this". By the time 1.2 comes it may be too late for Yuneec to be really competitive. It may end up being another company in the #2 slot...we'll see.

This unit looks better then it actually is. It's too bulky and requires six motors to fly this aircraft. Is this product prone to a flyaway due to GPS? Seems that way. Dollar for dollar the P 4 is a much better aircraft. The sensors and the technology that goes into a P4 provides more bang for the buck.

You can collapse the legs, have the H inverted while switched on and flip the retract switch, then all you need is to remove the camera.

I hope all went well with your Yuneec, I have the exact same issue as you. I have been flying drones and helicopters for a long time. I can certifiably say that my H is defective as well. Does the same thing, Toilet bowling and it flies crooked. It also twitches out when hovering becuase the gps is fighting with the compass. It does not matter how much I calibrate or where. The compass the typhoon H uses is a remake of the 3dr. In all practicality it is probably the exact same compass, just different manufacturer. The 3dr compass is a GPS, compass combo chipset. Really cool little thing. It is located under the top body panel at the back of the drone on top of some sort of ground/anti interference plate; it is plug and play not integrated into the flight controller. I have taken my drone apart and to my surprise I found one of the chips on the GPS compass combo, "3dr" to simply be mounted crooked. I may be mistaken but I believe it is the compass sensor in particular. Either way my H is flying diagonally at that exact same projection as the chip that is mounted crooked. I tested everything else, motors, controller and flight controller by simply disabling the GPS. Everything works as expected. I am getting the new 3dr chip from Yuneec today, hopefully it fixes my H. I hope this helps you and others with this problem.

I probably wouldn't recommend flying or calibrating a compass in that environment. Huge possibility of interference from nearby wifi or magnetic interference.

I'm just saying calibrating a compass in that environment is likely to cause flight issues. I'm sure Yuneec state that compass calibration should be done in a wide open space to minimise interference.

+Hobby Mounts he grassy part where it was recorded wasn't a lot on camera, the drift was a ton. The residential area was also a park. If you look at all the videos on you tube at H Vs P4 you can clearly see the H has lots of problems just looking at the videos in general. I think the DJI probably is a much better built product.

Thats a shame that you are having troubles. Nothing worse than getting something new and your all excited and then it doesn't work properly. It's such a let down. Maybe one of your motor or arms has rotated slightly in their mounts and isn't sitting level. You only need one to be slightly off to cause this type of issue.

I had PRECISELY the SAME problem!!! Sadly, I kept trying to fly it, thinking it was user-error, and the last time (TODAY) my H began circling I tried to bring it home. It would NOT land, so I tried to hover and grab it from the air by the struts. I was in ANGLE mode with Obstacle Avoidance OFF (how I always fly it) when it went berserk. It shot up all on its own, then headed toward the woods at max-speed. No control inputs had any effect. It crashed through the woods and onto a large rock in the creek bed where it practically exploded into dozens of pieces. I don't know if I had a lemon, or there are intermittent signals creating interference. I live in VERY rural farm country and fly around our pastures tracking our cattle and for predator control. I hate DJI and think the Phantom line are the ugliest copters out there, but I think I'm left with no alternative other than the Phantom 4 Pro.

Best drone dealer is Frank at CarolonaDronz ([e-mail]) Frank would give you a replacement and then he deals with the manufacturer. Your problem sounds like a improperly installed Compass or magnetic interference from the other internal electronics which results in the "toilet bowl effect"

I am guessing (as well as what Yuneeq said) it was probably a defective compass - it was intermittent so that makes me think either heat or something else related.
