I backed the indiegogo campaign for this multitool over 2 years ago. This unit arrived today and...leaves a lot to be desired.
As promised in the video, I'll carry this for a week and see what I think afterwards.

Leatherman has been making their tools forever, and started small in the US, lots of good practice- this is a great idea to make a new tool and I am hopeful that it works out. This tool is more complex then a leatherman, and probably would really cost 200-300 bucks with high quality machining and materials.

It's pretty obvious that half your complaints stem from your own frustration at your own ineptitude in filming it the first time. Bitching about stuff you haven't used and stuff you don't understand completely overwhelms the legitimate gripes you do have. For christ's sake contact Toler. I'm sorry you didn't know how to use your camera and even sorrier you bothered to try again.

For years, SOG made the heaviest, most cumbersome and most ridiculous multitools on the market. This is the new champion. The guys at Toler obviously don't have much engineering skill, but they sure have balls. It's hard to believe you can get this much stupid only $150.

I agree 100% with you... I am suprised at the passes people throw these guys... "Oh they are minor issues..." Really? How minor are they when I can get a beautiful Bibury that for all appearances has the build quality of a Leatherman for less than 30 bucks? There is even a tool with a wrench and pliers for under 30 that is machined better than this product.

Honestly surprised to see no one calling him out on not opening the pliers correctly and when he forced the file closed even though it was locked. I understand the bit retention is a problem but it does make me wonder if your overall dissatisfaction stems from not knowing how to opperate the tool.

I think this a pretty harsh and kinda assholish review. We are the early buyers, it's kinda part of the deal that we get to help polish the device before it hits mainstream sales. This review really should have been directed towards the owner to help him with quality and design. I have no doubt the owner will fix these issues.

I received mine and can echo all of your comments, the errors in the hex holes look just like mine. I did find one additional issue that I didn't see mentioned in the video. On the base of the pliers handle there is a hex driver spot next to the knife pivot to make an inline screwdriver. It has a hole in it that would appear to be to hold the detent ball for a hex shank(like the bit storage spots), but the shape of the bottom of the hole or simply its lack of depth does not allow the ball of either a bit or the extender to reach the hole in the plate, so like the other 2 hex driver spots the hex tools fall right out. I took detailed pictures and contacted Toler and received an email response within hours "My apologies. Thanks so much for the feedback on how we can improve. I of course want you to be fully satisfied. We'll send out a new tool with a return envelope for your current tool asap. Please use the tool you have until it arrives. I think you'll find it useful in the meantime. "

Shit happens. I've ordered mine and will receive sometime in july, still looking forward to it. Same crap happens with popular brands seeing how I am on my third leatherman I've had to send back once to repair and agian to replace. Leatherman should have no reason for the issues they have since they have been around for awhile but they do.

Did you ever receive yours? I ordered back in November or Dec of 2022, and as of May '23, still nothing, but I've seen enough reports from people who claimed they did receive theirs after *two years* that I haven't thrown in the towel yet. Edit: but it certainly disappoints. There are enough people claiming this to be a scam that I'm growing even more disappointed by the month.

@Jaerivus McTavern Sadly no. My actual order date was 3/26/2021, and I've been hearing talks of a scam as well. I just read the comments on toolers indigogo page recently, and I'm seriously starting to think I won't be getting the tool. He's having all these vague issues or "hurdles" and "hiccups," yet he is still selling the tools, even though it's as far as 3 years behind for some people. I promise if I do receive it, I will be sure to come back here and say so.

I received mine, I do not observe the problems you show with yours. There is indeed one of the tip sockets with a ball lock 1mm away from its position, and this point probably needs more attention of behalf of the manufacturer. It's a $100 multitool, though, so I was not expecting a Leatherman Charge Ti level, but it's much better than I thought it would be.

Just got mine yesterday and checked mine against yours. You totally got a lemon. The ball bearing on the bit extender is still visible but it does stay in the hex hole and has minor resistance to falling out. I got the carrying case, which is actually leather that smells nice and not like chemicals.
@markpapp8784

I watched this video having received and opened mine yesterday. It seems that (at least some of) the defects you found have been resolved. In no particular order: 1) The "file" / piercer wasn't bent or distorted in any way, but it doesn't look much good. 2) All Phillips screws were fine and undamaged, though one of the slotted screws at the pliers' pivot had tool marks, which surprised me on a factory assembled unit. 3) The screwdriver bit holder is easily inserted into the hex soxkets and does not shake loose from either, and the bits stay in the holder. 4) The belt pouch astonished me - it's made of decent leather and held together with high quality rivets - much better than expected. 5) The knife doesn't seem to have a lock. 6) The "metal saw" does look to be useless, but time will tell. 7) The adjustable wrench mechanism seems OK to me, though not yet tried. Overall, I suspect mine's an improvement on yours; I was quite impressed with the quality, but my expectations weren't high. It's still not the perfect everyday carry tool but I don't know if that's been invented. I'm curious to see if I ever really use it in anger, as if I know I'm going to need tools I usually carry a decent set...

I mean, I can't possibly say you're wrong, because it's obviously completely subjective and you are perfectly entitled to not like something for any reason and that's okay. And you're right that in several places that fit and finish is shockingly bad. So take anything I say below this as just being nitpicky AF and that on the whole, from what I see on my shiny light box of electrons, I agree with you that yours is unacceptable. But I will point out that (and I'm not one of those sunk-cost fanboys who has just built it up so much in my mind because I paid money and it's taking forever and oh god where is it IhopeIdidn'tgetscammedsoIbettermakeupsomegrandstoryabouthowit'sjustgoingtobeperfectandthat'swhyit'stakingsolong) Mike's promised to improve QC and no-cost exchange for anyone who gets one with QC failings. No idea how smooth/easy that is or if he'll honor it, but just saying it in case you weren't aware. As for the bits, again, I could be wrong because I don't have mine yet, but you can't call something "tool steel" or not based on weight. You could NEVER tell d2 apart from Cr14 apart from MP4 or any other steel by weight of such a tiny piece of metal. I'm guessing you're noticing less heft because those bits have a bit hollowed out to make space for the ball-detent mechanism. The bits COULD be cheap awful chinesium, but if you haven't used them, you really cannot know how good or not a bit is based on weight. What matters is the metal touching the screw, because that's the fail point. Definitely agree that countersink hole looks bad. But (and this is just nitpicking) you can't see "marks of poor heat treating". You could see heat scarring from the tool bit - which would be bad, but that's a separate cause for essentially the same problem (if you see color, the heat treat has been annealed, so doesn't matter how or why). The fit and finish on yours looks a LOT worse than other ones I've seen though. That's kind of a shame. I hope yours was just an oversight shipped out by Mike when he was sleep deprived from how feverishly he's been working, and I hope that you can get yours exchanged for a good one with little to no hassle. And apart from the really obvious fit and finish problems, I do think you really need to spend some time with a tool to really get a handle on how good it is (or isn't) There have been tools I got that I was stoked for out of the box, and even when I used a few times, only to realize later on that there are some huge issues. It's why I hate unboxing. Your first impressions are always going to be good or bad, rarely any middle ground.
@dalecrisp2901
@dalecrisp2901 2 жыл бұрын
Colin is absolutely correct. You can't tell tool steel from mild or alloy steel by weight. Nor can one see "marks of poor heat treating". Heat treating, as the name implies, is a process of heating and cooling in a manner specific to the material being heat treated. Since no tool touches the part, heat treating leaves no marks. Poor or otherwise. It looks to me like the hex holes that were pointed out might have been done with a broach. That would account for the apparent splits. A broach is commonly used in a production environment. A hole like that would never be "machined" with an end mill. Impossible to get square corners and too slow for a production environment. Once mine arrives I will be able to tell if the holes were broached or not. (the holes still might be absolute garbage, even if broached) Are there problems with the tool you received? It looks like it. Will Mike make it good? I think he will. He has been quite transparent with us and for one, I have to commend him on that. At times I have thought I could feel his frustration coming through and that made me feel he is legit. Could I be wrong, sure. Having been self employed for over 30 years in the tooling industry making all sorts of things that are typically used in production of something, I can honestly tell you that just getting the product to us through the issues the covid has created has been a herculean effort for Mike. With the knowledge I have I would want no part of it at all. Of course I am able to look into the past and see the things Mike has had to deal with. Still, I can tell you that he has not had much fun in the last couple of years. Unfortunately I have to agree that the tool does not look to be as useful as I had hoped. Awkward, unhandy, big, heavy?, all come to mind. I feel that big and heavy are on us. Like someone mentioned, it should be obvious that I tool with that many features is not going to be small and light. Awkward and unhandy? Maybe some of that is in the eye of the beholder. I am hoping it is better than it looks on the various reviews. I am expecting awkward and unhandy to win and that disappoints me. Time will tell.

You said you havnt used it for anything? Your review holds no validity. Everything im hearing so far (4:15) is that you don't like how it looks, which doesn't matter, and that it is too stiff. If you have ever actually used your Leatherman (I've had several 200s and 300s) for any real period of time you would know that they get too loose after not long. Lets address the negative "its made in China" comments.I own leatherman and sog tools and use a leatherman surge for my everyday work as a maintenance technician.The Surge is probably the best tool for everyday work use due to its heavyweight build.....its a great tool.I have just purchased a Roxon Phantom more out of curiosity than as a tool for work and its impressive.Build quality is excellent and the innovative design including the interchangeable blade system is the way forward in multi tool design.The scizzors on the tool are the best on the market and the fact there are twelve different blades you can interchange sets this tool apart from anything else.The secondary tools are more like you would see on a swiss army knife....not really heavy duty but they work for their intended uses.The tool also comes with spring loaded pliers and replaceable wire cutters.....you even get a spare pair included in the price.Roxon is a relatively new company but they are already showing promise in ther innovation and build quality........the tool is almost a work of art. This tool cost me 50 quid........leatheman cant touch this tool on pricing,even their cheaper tools are more expensive than the phantom and they are nowhere near as good.I will be following this company with great interest.......yes they can make improvements but they are a young company that are showing a lot of promise and great design deas.I think leatherman and all the top multi tool manufacturers need to take note on their pricing because gor 50 quid there is nothing on the market to compete with the Phantom.

Tool steel weighs more than mild? No. A36 steel is marginally the exact same weight as O1, 5160, 80CRV2, 15N20, and any other tool steel including types of high speed steel. A metal saw is supposed to have very fine teeth. Look at a hack saw, or even that needle file you were using in the video. Most of your other complaints are valid, especially the retention of the hex bits given the fact that there are detents. Mellow it out and/or educate yourself before talking about the quality of something since it seems you are at least unfamiliar with metalworking tools and heat treatment.
@madfab5723
@madfab5723 3 жыл бұрын
First, I know what a hacksaw is. I might not have communicated it in this final version, but my original comment was that the thickness of the saw seemed like it would be a hindrance to cutting metal. Seeing that it's twice as thick as the average 18 or 24 TPI hacksaw blade and a fraction of the length, you can see where I'm coming from. Again, I haven't tested this thing yet. Second, your point about the bits; mentally I was comparing them to the Philips/Flathead/Torx inserts I use in my drill. Yeah, you're totally right about the weight thing and no, I'm no heat treating expert. Never claimed to be. But I've done a bit of it and can recognize when it goes wrong. Since this second video was really off the cuff compared to the version I recorded and lost audio for, I neglected to mention those points. For a few moments I was chatting out of my ass, but hey, this is the internet, that's allowed. As for mellowing out? Never. The channel name is what it is for a reason. Either way, appreciate you checking this out.

I hope someone makes a minimal device with detachable 2 plier option, driver bits, and knife. Don’t need more than that. I also like the kershaw fire select. The sog powerlock, plus a small knippex cobra wrench gives me the versatile most edc tool options in the for the smallest footprint currently. Even the fire select + cobra gets me pretty far.

It took me a whole extra year to get mine and given all that extra time you'd hope it had improved significantly, it has not. I feel like you were being entirely too generous with your review. This tool is awful, its best "function" at this point will be to demonstrate for someone how NOT to make a multitool. This thing is a pile of bad ideas. The fact that the thin arm on the pliers can swivel all over is just an injury waiting to happen, unless of course like my $100 paperweight you intend to never use it as a tool. Perhaps someday after a blow to the head I will be enticed into using this for more than an ornament, its going to have to be a very hard blow to the head though. Appreciated your review and honesty so I gave a sub and a like though!

Forget trying to carry that thing. Just get your money back, it looks like junk. C o v i d or not, no thought was put into the manufacture of that "tool" and is inexcusable. Its a shame as the inventor seems like a genuine guy with a good idea. I was considering buying one once they were available but once I see phillips screws on a modern tool with that price tag, it gets a hard pass.

Thanks for the review man, most appreciated. I've been looking at getting one of these to supplement my Leatherman at work, but given work breaks them from time to time. I would love to put this thing through the same paces. But it seem like it wouldn't last too long. If Toler had actually made this to his own hype he would have had military contracts up his nose. Shame.

Having carried many multitools over the years I can simply look at this tool and tell you its way over designed. The tool is simply way too busy and cumbersome to be a useful plier multitool. There is one thing multitools have made clear to me and that is there is no such thing as one tool that does everything. And every time you add a tool something else has to get sacrificed. By the time your done adding tools what you end up with is way to many tools and compromises in the design and none of them do anything well.

I saw this thing ages ago and I thought, "Nice idea but too gimmicky" I can totally understand why you're pissed after waiting all that time only to receive a sub par tool. I supported a jctactical product on kickstarter (I think) got the first item and it was ridiculously out of balance for what it was and took ages to arrive. The second item I backed never happened. My money disappeared with the developer. I won't back any of these items ever again. What I can't figure out is, after reading a lot of comments, why did people vote down this video??

The more I watch this video, it seems more like a impulse buy from harbor freight that you spend 12 bucks on - then you actually open it and try to use it... get disappointed, and it ends up in the back of the truck somewhere and you forget about it but its ok cuz it was only 12 bucks. I think this MAY be a 12 dollar product that we all just grossly overpaid for. No more indigogo projects for me....And i got the case too :( Another thing i noticed is that in the original product demo video it shows the bit holder to be a nice knurled piece of clean steel. The one you have looks like cheap black painted steel. I liked the contrast of the original a bit more.

I haven't received mine yet but this is what I was expecting. You can tell by the decisions they made that it will never be as functional as claimed. The fact that the bits and bit driver use a ball bearing system instead of quality magnets is proof of poor quality. You only see that on knockoff tools from China. The omnilock wrench is the same as the standard universal wrenches you can find at hardware stores. They just swapped which part moves and which is stationary. Unless you're working with bolts and nuts all day it's useless. I am curious if the back of it can be used as a hammer though. The fact that phillips screws were used instead of torx is another sign of poor quality. The design of the knife is a joke. You can tell it wasn't originally incorporated in the design save was just added on later. It should be in the area next to the saws but instead it's on the side doubling the thickness of the tool. I hope mine works as advertised but I'm not keeping my hopes up. At best we can hope that this will allow for a much better version in the future.

Thanks, I saved $150. In terms of design .... 1- the OMNILOOK key is certainly not an innovation, I have had Chinese keys based on the same principle for decades, 2- the folding pliers ... like the SOG Paratool pliers ... 3- the floating handle of the pliers, a very bad idea, is reminiscent of the mini multi-tools like Sebertool and Swiss+Tech. In terms of manufacturing ... 1- the designer tells us that he has them manufactured in China in the factory used by major brands of multi-tools: GERBER? SOG? :)? 2- for the price, we have it made in the United States, even in Taiwan, but not in China! At the QC level ... 1- a hacksaw instead of a wood saw, bits that do not hold, a rotten awl, is that a joke ??? So thank you for this review which shows that the designer is not an engineer like Tim Leatherman! :)
