I have owned my discovery 5 HSE luxury for 2 years now and I think it is probably the best family car on the market today. In this video I talk through what i love about the Land Rover Discovery 5 and what has gone wrong with my discovery 5. If you're looking to buy a Discovery you have to watch this video! The new Discovery 5 drives like a Range Rover Vogue or Range Rover sport with all modern comforts and more. If you choose the HSE luxury option you also have the Land Rover rear entertainment system.
Having owned a Discovery 4 this car is miles apart being a much more upmarket SUV. The Discovery 5 is a very capable off road car but also a perfect 7 seater family car.

I just purchased 2020 a few months ago here in the US. Couldn’t find a 2021 anywhere due to production shortages because of Covid and actually had a difficult time finding the 2020. I absolutely love it. I was concerned because I’ve always driven a large suv, but the way this car handles and the AWD feature as well as how it looks completely outweighs that concern for me. BTW, I love the uniqueness of the license plate placement in the tailgate. Absolutely love this car so far!!!! Great video.

Superb video review and I agree with you a truly superb 4x4. I own the discovery HSE 2019, and it’s also the 2 litre version. I never tested the 3 litre as when I tested this 2 litre I was blown away by its comfort and plenty of power, in fact I was supremely impressed by its performance for such a big car! I also love the look too. I’ve only had a slight problem with the drivers side window which would not work for a couple of hours. But solved itself. The space is huge I get my mountain bike in the back with the seats down, and can go anywhere I want in super luxury! I’ve now done 6,600 miles and it’s been super. It’s great value and really takes some beating! I’m thinking about the new 2021 version as it has updated the entertainment system but I’m also considering the Range Rover SVA, for more prestige and power.

Great video, really interesting to hear. I just can’t believe the type of issues JLR cars sometimes have more than average, like your engine issue, that’s a pretty big issue.. same with the suspension. Great video. I have an April 18 reg HSE Lux 2.0, very similar to you that I bought as an approved used in Dec 2018. I had the oil leak, leaking front window, faulty rear camera, numerous replacement door handle lock covers and the usual media glitches. However, despite this it is a fab car and I don’t want to change it. I was considering the extended warranty but the price does seem steep. The worry of course is something else goes wrong and the price even higher.....

A very helpful video, thank you. You mentioned about it being a tricky car, re manoeuvrability and parking, would you know how it compares to a current model RR Sport? I'm changing mine latter this year, and don't really want something that's noticeably more cumbersome, especially as I don't really need the full breadth of the Disco's practicality anymore. But I do still like the look of it.
@thedoctorsgarage

Hi Shep thanks for the comment- In all honesty I don't think it's that much worse than a RR sport- the boot is way bigger so it's taller at the rear but actually driving it I don't think you'll notice a negative difference

@@thedoctorsgarage Thank you for getting back to me. I suspect your probably right. I compared them on LR's wed site, they're the same width, the disco is bit longer, and of course taller. what was surprising, the Disco is slightly faster 0-60 in the D300 flavour, even though its heavier! I wont be complaining if I get one, but would of thought the "Sport" would of been a fair bit faster, for obvious reasons?

@ 14:30 apart from [the engine self destructing, the rear suspension failing, the engine leaking oil] mechanically it's been fine! For anyone considering this vehicle, never - ever - buy a land rover product outside of a manufacturer's warranty. JLR recently admitted poor build quality is costing them a lot in lost sales. Great design, but I wouldn't even consider one, let alone a used one.

@@dartanianrubanne3394 to be honest, I don't really rate the xc90 either, awful engines, dreadfully dull, horrible central screen in dash that has to control everything- albeit reasonably well made. I think 2015 onwards Q7 is a better bet. But it isn't an off roader of course- that is one thing you can't take away from LR - it's just such a shame they're screwed together poorly from cheap components.

I've had a 2005 Disco 3 for many years - it gets very little use these days, mainly as a tow truck, but I still love driving it - and I laughed out loud at the comments about electronics. Exactly like mine - especially the cruise control: sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn't, completely arbitrarily. I mainly drive a BMW X3 and when it comes to its replacement the quality of the Land Rover electronics is likely to be a deal breaker - otherwise I'd get a Disco 5 like a shot.

I’ve got the same car, same age, only the 3L. I absolutely love it! Had a new windscreen because of a leak and an adjustment to the boot because of misalignment but otherwise it’s been brilliant. I struggle with the TVs tbh - I didn’t know you could watch stuff off the web I will have to learn how to do that. Oh, one other issue - I have the top end wheels that look great but are peeling!! 😖 I must figure out what to do about that! The drive, the looks, sports mode, 7 seats, the space, the driving position, the amount of gadgets in the lux are all amazeballs. I’ll never have a better car in my opinion. The kids love it too.

Great video. I am from Canada and a preowned 2021 discovery 3.0 V6 took my all attention when I analyzed the overall package being offered. -Spacious. -Adequately punchy engine. -Flying carpet ride feel. -Value for money as German competitors are quite expensive. but there are a few reasons which are making me confused to buy this SUV: -Super low resale value. -Reliability issues. If I am spending close to $85k plus a 7.99% rate of interest, I would like to keep the car for the next 7-8 years as its a hefty amount. I am scared to keep this car after its warranty lapses in 2025.

I claimed on my insurance for body and mechanical repair. 14 weeks in to repair and I am still awaiting return. Very long parts wait from LR (steering rack, suspension arms and subframe). Can anyone advise if I have a legitimate claim against LR as I have excess to pay on my insurance claim and the car is now devalued as it has been in an accident. I understand that this fault has been recognised with other LR models that have been recalled but not the Discovery 5.

so apart from the gearbox suspension and the engine mechanically it’s been fine 😂. My wife had the discovery sport hse 2018 2.0 and it was nothing but grief. About as reliable as a 80s alfa, Landrover were top to try and fix it but they are just so cheaply produced there mechanics were struggling .

Love our discovery 5 for what it is, but it’s the first Land Rover I’ve owned in 20 years that has been truly unreliable (v6 HSE luxury). Love the space. It’s 90% of a Range Rover for 70% of the price, but it’s got to go. We’ve got a defender 110 p400 arriving in a few days to replace it.

They should invest in a new updated Discovery 4 shape: A Retro with 2 V6 engines and 2 V8 engines. Add an optional electric motor and battery capability as an option then you would have a winner for the next 20 years. A Ford Explorer/ Edge with a Discovery badge, is fooling no one!

was hoping the 2.0 might offer something that wouldn’t blow up like the 3.0V6. but seems land rover have managed to create yet another self destructing engine 😞

Had three issues that were resolved under warranty on my discovery 5 HSE 2017 3.0.First one is the real tailgate was rubbing on the offside bumper and the second is that i couldn't check the oil level so it went into the dealer again and it was diagnosed that the sender and wiring loom in the sump had failed and had to be replaced. the infotainment system crashed when the dealer was doing some updates so landcover had to change the whole system.

2 liter engines fail too? 3 liter engines snap cranks btw. Started from Discovery 3 and they still snap in D5. This is the most negative thing about Discoverys . Yes some LR lackey says it's about 2% failure rate but it seems to be bulsh**. It's pretty much lottery. No regular oil changes will prevent this. It's failure in design (combined with the weight of the vehicle). And even if you replace the engine, it still may fail. The flaw is not fixed. I have Disco4 (with replaced engine). It's brilliant car until it works. But Land Rover has to fix the quality issues. New Defenders are failing left and right too. It hurts the brand severely. Land Rover has pretty bad reliability reputation.

So it's less than 3 years old, the engine has gone and costs £20-25 grand to repair, the gearbox has an oil leak and the suspension broke oh and you have lots of electrical glitches , that is terrible ! You like the look of it? I think it's hideous , oh and it's noisy , no wonder you want an AA breakdown policy! I have a terribly in reliable Range Rover , loved my Discovery 3 s though they were not as much trouble and look much nicer than the 5.

To be fair, that's a bang-on description. Until you mentioned it i'd been thinking the same thing subliminally. Unfortunately, my mind's eye will never be able to unsee the Saab 95 every time I see the Disco 5 now. Thankfully, I've got my 60000 mile 2015 Disco 4 HSE Lux to mitigate the psychological harm that your observation has caused me lolzzz.
