After taking the paperwork to DMV, getting a VIN inspection done, and even getting handed registration so that I could use it, I was patiently waiting for the title and plates to show up in the mail. But what I got instead was some very bad news. I’ve given all the paperwork and information I have to the sheriff’s department, and had a long interview with a DMV investigator as well that both cleared me of any wrongdoing, but unfortunately I have no recourse to get my money back. Even in the slim chance that law enforcement was able to find the thief, I would still have to figure out how to get my money out of him, and the chances of actually getting paid would basically be zero. This is a pretty big hit and a real bummer. It’s the first time I’ve ever bought something in brand new condition and it was a very welcome change to finally have something nice that didn’t need some sort of work done to it. Oh well, shit happens and there’s nothing else to do but move on and power through it.

For some context here.. When I met the guy to buy the trailer, he had a title, manufactures certificate of origin, and bill of sale, all matching the VIN number on the trailer that did NOT come up as stolen when I checked it. There’s no way I can get my money back from the guy who sold it to me, BECAUSE HE WAS THE THIEF. I’ve been through the ringer with the sheriffs office handling the case for the original and legitimate owner, and a DMV investigator, and I gave them all the documentation and paperwork I had, including the cash withdrawal from my bank for the amount of the trailer just an hour before the purchase, which cleared me of any wrong doing. But all of the paperwork the thief had, the phone number he used, and even the address we met at were all fake. The DMV investigator said he’s seen quite a bit of this lately where the thief’s are scouting out a vehicle ahead of time, making up all the paperwork with the legitimate VIN, then listing it for sale before they ever even steal it. Then once they have someone (like me) setup a time to come look at the vehicle, they go take it and meet up with the prospective buyer at the address of a random person who they know isn’t home during the day. That way the vehicle still has a clean vin when “sold”, and you’ll never be able to track them back down once everyone realizes it’s stolen. So since we have no idea what the true identity of that person is, or how to ever find them again, I’m not getting that money back.

I have also been scammed this way. The one thing I had on my side is that I parked behind the trailer to check it out and left my truck running with the dash cam on. While I still lost money. His face and vehicle were on camera and he was arrested. Of course it was a week later and the money was spent. I could sue him but he had no pot to piss in and already owed restitution to 3 other individuals previously. Now he's serving 15 years for drugs and theft charges. My moral is record every transaction for your own safety.

When I saw the title of the video and knowing you're in Oregon, my first thought was Portland. Portland has got to be the capital of stolen trailers in the US. I had a one year old Wells Cargo enclosed trailer stolen there from in front of my apartment about 15 years ago. I think at that time there had been over 600 trailers stolen that year. Luckily I had put insurance on it about 6 months before. It was recovered about 15 blocks away and had been trashed in order to make it less identifiable. One of the idiots that stole it was wearing a tracking collar on his ankle and the cops were able to place him at the scene at the exact time it was stolen. The charge was "unauthorized use of a vehicle". His defense attorney kept getting it postponed till I said "f**k it" and forgot about it. If I was betting, I would bet he was your thief or definitely knows the thief.

Casey, unfortunately bad things happen to good people, but it's how you respond and you are responding admirably. Short story.... Moved across country, couldn't tow all with my little Ford Escort (so we packed what we could inside the car), friend said I'll store the rest in my spare room, you get a job, send money, I'll ship it to you. Mean time, drugs came into her life. She sold all our stuff that she could for drugs, dumped the rest. Police response, drive back, go to court, good luck, blah blah blah blah blah. Yup life sucks sometimes, but stuff can be replaced (boy that's a hard pill to swallow). May you continue to be blessed in all else in your life. You can likely write it off as a business loss on your taxes - at least there is that. You might also check if your insurance company has a title insurance clause. But yea, that's a total bummer. I always get a copy of drivers licenses whenever I buy cars & stuff - that's a good habit.

Coincidentally, last year I drove 200 miles to go look at / buy a trailer. When I started taking photos / video, the seller got very shifty, trying to hide behind my truck. Needless to say, I drove home without the trailer! I feel very sorry for you - you're clearly a good guy who doesn't deserve this. Have to hope they sell another trailer to someone prepared to track them down and 'politely' ask for a refund.

So I thank you for you helping others. God Bless you and yours.

Casey, I’m so sorry to hear that the trailer was stolen! I might have things mixed up….. but was this not the situation that you found a trailer, contacted the person, had to travel quite a distance and then when you got there they said “ oh sorry that one is sold, but we have another one for a bit more money”. If this is the one, things are waaay fishy!! I think the authorities need to dig deeper. But I do always appreciate your very positive outlook on everything!! Pick yourself up and drive on… we all have setbacks, but you always remind us to carry on!!

I recognize the Irish Iron parts you just showed for the under reach. very good people. When I was towing I purchased a lot of there attachments and was very happy with them. I did find uses for the tall stands I was towing a lot of large motor homes and found I could grab some of them with tall stands and forks, instead of using the wheel grids.

I got the harbor freight wireless winch controller for 39.00 and cut the plug off and used it on my towmaster dump. Works awsome and I still have the oem corded controller in the box.

I did the same thing. But being that my Load Trail dump trailer was a power up/power down I had to install 2 diodes (works as a check value) so power goes one way and not back the other way. Then I connected the corded control box back to it by using some piggyback clips. I also added an off/on switch to the Harbor Freight box because it does draw some power from the battery when parked. Works AWESOME!

Sorry you got taken on the trailer. First they did the ol' bait and switch, then turns out it was stolen. With all that paper work, I'd be investigating the original owner also or maybe the thief was an employee of the original owner The new tools for the blue truck are pretty nice, can't wait to see what else you get, to improve it..

I’m almost 100% sure you didn’t have to give the trailer back. I was not a lawyer in the PNW but I was a lawyer and contracts law is pretty much the same in most states. You were a “bonafide purchaser for value.” You did everything right in your purchase of the trailer. The guy who had the trailer “stolen” could have protected himself with insurance and been out nothing. Nothing you could have done different to protect yourself in this transaction. You therefore should have been able to keep the trailer. When I was 18, I had a similar experience. I bought a ‘69 Corvette off a dealer lot. Did a bunch of work to it and when I went to get the vin inspected, the police said it was stolen. They impounded it but rather than hold it as they should have done, they released it to the guy who claimed it was stolen. I was 18, and had a car loan for a car I didn’t have anymore. I called an attorney in my hometown who explained that the car should have been mine and the cops screwed up in returning it prematurely. I had to sue the guy in his home state and eventually got the car back. My lawyer said I should sue the cops too, because I was out money for attorney’s fees I should never have had to pay. I declined to sue the local police department. That experience was one reason I became a lawyer.

Sorry to hear you getting caught up in a bad deal like that. Thanks for the heads up that a VIN search can't be relied upon and that official paperwork can be forged so easily. Do you think that first trailer you were going to get was legit, or had they stolen that one too? I think that I remember this correctly, you went to pick up the first trailer, they had sold it before you got there, but then said that they had this other trailer that they would sell you that was a better trailer... It really ticks me off when good, hard working people get taken advantage of.

@@tak-el-uc this is exactly what I was thinking.......you put a random trailer for sale and then say it is "sold", but I got this other one and then there is no way whoever it was stolen from is looking for it and finding it advertised online......I doubt that Casey will spend the time (he is the type that moves on with life), but that could be a way to catch the thief......get a burner phone or google number and .call about trailers you see for sale and see if the same "well it is sold, but I have this other one" is used......most random people do not have several trailers for sale just the one
