BMW did a horrible job with the sills on this car, it's no wonder they rust when they have so many little holes and dirt traps in them where water/dirt/salt can work its way in. My 525i has the exact same problems and will need similar repairs fairly soon I think. That said I would NEVER work under a car that is only resting on a metal bar like that! Even a slight knock and it could send it crashing down on top of you!

Nice work I would just suggest to use stainless steel metal for repairs and stainless welder wire, thats how I try to fix rusted parts around garage and it works like miracle no worries about rust for decades

Not the best idea to weld stainless steel to mild steel. The weld seams especially become very prone to rusting.

1:13 WOW! I never realized there are plastic covers there! I thought it was all sheet metal. Correct me if I'm wrong, but it kinda feels like the plastic just adds to the rust issues. Must be a lot of moisture captured inbetween the plastic and the metal, no? My E39 looks the same btw. In Sweden, so roughly the same climate. One of the jack points failed the other day, went straight through. :)

Not really. Those are there for a reason. In my newer e39, I had one of those plastic covers missing and where it was missing, the side skirt was way worse than on the parts that had the plastics on. Of course there is some moisture trapped there, but there is also thick and durable undercoating there. So the moisture doesn't matter.

Probably every E39 owner will have to do the welding in these spots if they do not drive the car exclusively in warm climate... Well done! How long do you estimate this fix will last before it needs to be welded again? Could this be a lifetime fix if the car was only to be driven in summer from now on?

True. This spot will rust in every e39. How I did it now, it's probaply 10 year fix. Could be fine longer or shorter time. Depending on how bad environment the car will be driven. For lifetime fix, you need to be more carefull with all the rust. In best case cut away all the rust. Even the smallest spots. Replace with fresh metal and the paint the inside with better paints that I had here.

Fine BMW the E39, but never understood they didnt protect them a little better from the factory. They can learn something from Mercedes and Volvo in the late 80's. My W124 and 740 from 1988 never had rust. I also drive a E39, but the same rust as in this video. Will do the fix some day, but for now it will drive just fine.

Well at least in Finland both W124 and and 740 are all rusted away long time ago. You hardly never see those on the road anymore. But e39's are plentiful. Of course e39's have cosmetic rust on doors etc and the jacking points are PIA. But most of the car stay solid without rust.

@@pazi88 I ended up getting ML, 77B and 482. Btw, before applying the bitumen, did you also sand down the rest (non rusty) of the original coating on the whole underside of the sills? Or did you just clean it and apply it over the original coating. I'm worried about small rust spots laying under that original coating and continuing to rust without me seeing it because of the newly applied bitumen.

Hitsisaumat kannattaa käydä läpi koriliimalla, esim sikaflexin löytyy ihan motonetissä. Tälleen saumoista ja koko paikasta tulee tiivis eikä kosteus pääse sisäpuolelle eikä hitsi sauman koloihin. Muuten oon tehny samanlailla paikat kun säkin tässä ja hyvin on noi ohutpeltiset japsit pysyny kunnossa 👍

Tuli ihan sama huomattua tollasen piikkilankalaikan kanssa, kivasti oli takissakin pystyssä noita piikkejä. Itekin käytän nykyään laskettelulasi mallisia suojalaseja. Silmiä viitti yhtää riskeerata. Hyvää työtä taas ja E39 sai jatkoaikaa :) Pitänee seuraavalla kerralla kun hioo jotain pellille hommata tuota epoksia, jos sitä tollain pystyy pensselillä laittelemaan.

Threshold welding is all the machines have a weak spot from the above times not primed. Looking at work is well done. Must be primed on the inside and outside. Longer lifetime machine designs.

Should send that tube to the hydraulic press channel to see how much load it can take :D I have the same problem with my E39, first quote for repair is best part of 3000 euros 😲, it's not as bad as this either.

25:40 kohassa näkyy nuo kaks jarruputkee niin onko joku syy sille että mulla on jo kahessa peräkkäisessä e39 vedetty nuo tosta tankin alta? Ne aika tarkkaan kattoo aina leimalla mutta päästi ainakin viimeksi läpi sillee. oiskohan minkälainen homma vetää uusiksi tuolta tankin päältä?

Tankkihan siinä pitää puottaa pois, sekä kardaani yms. aika iso homma, niin siksi ne putket vedetään monesti uusiksi sieltä, mistä helpoiten saa :D

It's just that the paint and stone chip protection gets chipped over time and salt water and other crap from the road starts to eat away the metal.

Joskus kuullu huhua että toi korin sisällä oleva uretaani tykkää syttyä hitsatessa, en tiiä oliko kipinästä vai kuumuudesta syttyny, mutta otikko sen huomioon tossa tehdessä? ps. Hyvä video taas!

Joo tiedän. Tuossa kotelossa ei vielä uretaania ole, että jos ei pidemmälle tarvi mennä, niin se ei haittaa. Mutta kuten videoltakin näkyy, niin helmaa jos mennään eteenpäin, niin siellä uretaania on. Ja se on erittäin vittumaista saada pois sieltä niin että pystyy hitsaamaan. Meidän farkussa oli helmaa kolaroitu ja huonosti korjattu, niin piti sen vuoksi uusia metrin pätkä helmaa. Ja meni yks päivä pelkästään siihen että jyysti sen uretaanin ja muun ruostesuojauksen helma sisältä pois, korjailuja varten.

Joo niinkuin sanoin, niin hitsausjälki ei ole erikoista. En tiedä onko se hitsaajassa vai koneessa vika, mutten ole ikinää saanu nättiä hitsausjälkiä, kun hitsaa alhaalta ylöspäin. Normaalisti kun hitsaa, niin saa kyllä ok jälkeä: pazi88.kuvat.fi/kuvat/Projektikuvat/e30+the+ONE/alusta/IMG_5011.JPG

@@pazi88 tosiaan pellit oli hyvin leikattu alku tosi hyvä. Monesti se käden kulma on eri suuntaan hitsatessa eri. Käytätkö täytelankaa, hiilidioksidia vai yhdistelmä kaasua? Yhdistelmällä on ehkä helpoin hitsata. Itsellä tuppaa olemaan toisinpäin. Pellin palat sinne päin mutta sauma on ok🤣

@@paulirumbin1541 Normi lanka ja hiilidioksidi oli tässä käytössä. Aikasemmin olen tuossa MIG:ssä käyttänyt argon-seoskaasua, koska sama ko. pullo on TIG käytössä. Mut kokeilin hiidioksidia, kun sanovat että pelaa paremmin mustan raudan kanssa MIG:ssä. Mutta en kyllä itse huomannu mitään eroa. Kai sitä on niin aloittelija hitsaaja ettei huomaa pieniä eroja :D En tiedä onko se nyt käden kulmasta kiinni, vaan näyttää että sula metalli valuu aina alaspäin ja tekee saumasta ihmeellisen näkösen. Ja välillä tippuu sulaa metallia kolvin kärkeen aiheuttaen räkimistä. Liekkö sit virtaa liikaa, mutta tuo meidän esabbi vaan hitsi ei tartu jos pienemmällä virralla koittaa hitsata....
