Brilliant kit. I have to take a blood thinner and have carried some simple band-aids for years. But last winter I cut my finger slicing down cardboard boxes for recycling and was bleeding badly. Now I want to have a 4x4 gauze and some duck tape for my cut kit. Small addition but for me that helps until I can get to more first aid resources (or stitches at the urgent care).

Interesting bit of kit .Only couple of things I would like to suggest,is the needle . Changing to a self threading needle takes away the fiddling, if not impossibility of threading a needle when hands/fingers are cold/ swollen/damaged .Adding a couple of anti histamine tablets takes up very little room (for some a lifesaver) would be beneficial to my mind .

Great mini kit. A small mirror might be a good addition. Small and slim so fits the spec for a pocket kit but essential for self treatment of facial injuries like stuff in your eye, bee stinger in the mouth etc. Additional usefulness as a signalling heliograph

Good suggestion Joe, I do have a tiny heliograph that would fit in perfectly. I hope you are keeping well mate.

30 years ago I completed my workplace first aid training with a Non Profit Medical First Aid Providers - smaller version of Red Cross. Similar pouches were given out for gloves, face shield & alcohol prep swipes. I added a few dressings & a magnifying lens / tiny tweezers. I carried it in my trousers for years before my phone case became the replacement.

I'm a fan of anti diarrhea tablets in my mini EDC and also tiny, cotton towel "pills". They expand with water to form a surprisingly substantial cloth. Have a myriad other uses too.

I wonder if you could find a flat whistle that those scissors could fit into, protecting them and adding the whistle feature as well.

Taking your mobile so you can summon assistance if required along with a note of any alergies, Blood type, DNR info and Donor status on a card maybe an idea in case you black or bleed out, in which case carrying an Israeli Bandage or CAT 2 Tourniquet might just save you if an accident with sharps occurs. I can't see many places to be spending that Tenner in the woods, Just mind out those pesky squirrels don't mug you for it, they can be savage!!

@@greencraft4783 Thanks for the kind words, yes it’s hard work along with running the business and other plates spinning sadly it definitely takes its toll . Coupled with the fact I had not taken a single penny in 2 years of filming! So felt no choice but to call it a day and have had to walk away….I WIlLL NOT be returning to that channel but instead stated again with the account I am writing this on . The other channel is now controlled by the editing company we HAD “partnered” with who I was told by them are intent on “re branding it” . Gutted but that’s life , we dust ourselves off and we go again . Forwards together Nick 🤝

Blimey! I have no experience of editing companies (and after hearing that - I will give them a miss I think!). You will do well with the new venture I am sure. If I can do anything to help let me know. Atb Neil

Very timely, ta. Having finally (I think) sorted a mobile toolkit (and stowing place for) for my motorbike, I just the other day nicked my finger and was spewing a disproportionate amount of red stuff into my glove - my immediat ethought was: "about time you had a small EDC first aid kit stowed on the bike, too". So thanks for the extra reminder, and the helpful hints of what I might gather to make it ... plus a wee tube of burn salve, I guess (although, on that note, I find a small bottle of Lavender essential oil amazing for all sorts of 'first aid' including minor insect bites, minor burns, antseptic for small abrasions, etc. Don't claim any science here - just seems to do the job. Nature, eh?).

Hi Niel,as always I enjoyed your sensible logical practical approach.In A&E we love Steristrips to close wounds but nowadays also use superglue to spot weld cuts. Stings a bit and for EDC I suggest wrapping the small tube in a bit of cling film in case it bursts. Be a shame to bleed to death because your cut kit was glued completely shut ! Thanks for all the great vids . John P.
@greencraft47832 жыл бұрын
Hello John, thanks for commenting. Is that regular super glue? Or a special medical version?. I remember reading somewhere that it caused tissue damage, but if regular stuff works, that would definitely get a place in the kit. Atb. Neil
@johnpohorely87212 жыл бұрын
@@greencraft4783 Hi Neil, yes there are expensive single use sterile kits available to the NHS.but I’m not sure how a bushcrafter would buy a small number. Most times a cut needs cleaning before closing but then a wet wound (with blood and water )will stop Steristrips from holding either side firmly enough for the wound edges to be pulled together. I suggest drying off the wound after cleaning by pressing hard with swabs made from New J cloths ( clean enough for 1st Aid ) The Steristrips are supplied on a 3 section piece of paper. Remove the middle section only so that you can apply all 5 Steristrips at once across the cut.Press down on the wound again to stop bleeding then pull the wound shut and anchor the other side..Remove the other 2 pieces of paper & press down the ends of the strips after drying as best you can.You only get 1 shot at this and if the wound floods with blood too quickly the Steristrips won’t hold. That’s where the superglue comes in.You can Spotweld the wound between the parallel lines of the Steristrips and also strengthen the anchors either side. Remember you will become attached to the wound if you touch the wet superglue. Do not flood the wound with glue & squeeze shut. When you apply pressure to the wound to dry and stop bleeding a conscious patient will let you know there is an underlying fracture. Any suspicion that there is a compound ( open) fracture do not glue .Immobilse ,cover the wound and get help. This is rather wordy Niel but I hope you can visualise the technique ? If I find a supply of kits I will send some onto you.Cheers John P.

Eyerything you've seen in movies, on how to treat a wound, is 100% wrong and in most cases, it's the exactly opposite, to what we actually have to do. You never put anything on the wound. Only clead water and that's only if the wound is dirty. Alchohol or any similar antiseptic, is used to clean AROUND the wound, never on it. Then, we have to keep the wound in a moist enviroment, whiich depending on what we use to keep it moist, we can also keep it safe from infection, and that moisture, will help the wound heal way faster without leaving any marks on the skin. I personaly use a mix of John's wort oil, bees wax and some herbs. It speeds the healing procedure x3 to x4 times faster and in the same time, it helps the wound stay disenfected, acts like an antibiotic, and many more. Gauze swabs are excellent, to not only protect the wound and futher accidents or hits on the wond that would hurt otherwise, but also properly used and changed everyday, will also help speed the procedure. That's my tips, for medium wounds or burns. For a small cut, a cloth usually biege colour adhesive bandage, is the way to go. Antibiotic ointments, should also be used in smaller qualtities in this case too. Hope that helps.

Carry aspirin, folks, maybe in a canister on your keychain. If someone's having a heart attack but aren't (yet) in cardiac arrest, there's little you can do for them except get them to chew 325 mg of aspirin and get them to a hospital.
