My Electric Wood Splitter Modified for 1 hand operation

I installed an on/off Switch in place of the Switch you had to hold while it was in operation. If you try this Modification watch carefully the proper way to Ground out the Start Capacitor. If not Grounded out you may receive a shocking sensation you will not like.

Thanks for that tip as I need an electric splitter but the required two-hand operation is not to my liking. I have some larger diameter logs which will need to be guided with one hand while the other hand operates the splitter. I've been looking at one of the few splitters which still offers one-hand operation; however, those are significantly more expensive while offering the same amount of splitting power.

Why did you do this when you could just use an adjustable C clamp, like I did, to hold the switch down?

I would have thought clamping the motor button on, and then just use a switched extension lead to turn the machine on and off when required, would achieve the same result.

I believe you are correct. I saw one video where he drilled a hole through the two sides that come up come up & put a pin through it

I wouldn't exactly call that a "Proper" way to ground out a capacitor using a screwdriver can damage the capacitor, it's much better if you make a capacitor discharge tool, using 12AWG, 600 volt rating wire and a 20K OHM 5w resistor. "Caps are specified for maximum leakage, which translates to "it takes at least this long for it to discharge". The leakage gets less as the voltage drops, very strongly, so it takes a very long time indeed. I did a quick calculation that it takes a minimum of 10 days to lose 10% of the voltage, but the next 10% would take three months, and the next 10% after that, two years. At that point you are at no less than 73% voltage, or 180v on a 250v cap - not a good idea !"

As far as that green power button, I placed a 14" piece of 3/4" wide wood from the button to the ground, instant foot switch, freeing up my right hand to guide the wood, cost nothing.

The OEM switch is labeled 20 Amp at 250 Volts/35 Amps at 125 Volts. The replacement maintained-on/maintained-off switch is specified for 6 Amps at 400 Volts. Has the switch held up okay?
